Dad says no to dog, family gets Dog, 6 months later Dad and Dog are inseparable. It's like a law of the universe.

I thought that was how it'd be said, but wasn't sure. Keeping the name, or planning to change it?

Big dogs always look at you like "Well the other one gets to do it! Why can't I?!"

We would change her name, but she knows it so I dont want to confuse her any more. She does "duck" at times when I go to pet her. Goes to show her background. Whoever those fucks were who abandoned her in TX I hope they are ran over.

Dogs adapt to names super quick. Don't worry about confusing her. Calling her something new might actually help, just in case she ever got the shitty "Gia!" Smack! kind of treatment. I'm glad she found her forever home with people that will love her like she deserves.

    My dogs have several names.
    Take it easy
    Knock it off
    Leave it
    Drop it
    Get down
    Let's go
    Shit bag
    Meathead.....
My wife named them Daisy and Bruno.
I call them Boop and Buddy.
At the end of the day, they couldn't care less. As long as they know you're talking to them and they know what you mean.

My dog does the same thing (head duck) sometimes when I go to pet him. We got him as a puppy, but a stray from TX. Never thought it might have been a reaction to a bad experience.

    @T-Rex266

The head dip is also simply just an instinctual behavior for a dog to show its acknowledgement of its 'pack' standing in relation to you...

Unless other submissive behaviors are exhibited such as tail tucking, ears pinned waaaaaay back, etc. I wouldn't read too much into it; but, if you're see those other things, yes chances are right pets mean bad experience w/right hand....

You can also simply test it by switching hands that you reach out to pet with and see if the behavior changes; most abusers use their dominant hand to abuse with...

Approach with the hand palm out, fingers down, like you're handing her something.
Pet her under the chin and thin slip the hand up the side to the top of the head and commence head petting.
Some dogs are just a little weirded out by an approach from above, whether they were abused or not. Some dogs don't GAF either way. Try the approach from the bottom for a while until it's burned into her brain that a hand coming in just means a pet, no matter what angle it's coming in.
I've had a few dogs that were timid. Some take longer than others, but that's worked for me.
And I ALWAYs approach a dog I don't know with palm out, at nose level, so they can smell it first and not feel weird about the approach.
Current dog I got used from a rescue place.
Scar on his neck from being tied up with a rope outside. Super scared of me the first couple days. Actually pissed on the floor a few times when I went to pet him. Freaked out about having his backend touched. Definitely was hit.
Took a little time, patience and repetition, but he's doing fine and he's a normal PITA just like the other one now.

He's got a pretty good gig now.
Roof over his head, a buddy his age and size, magic water and food bowls in the kitchen that produce food and water all the time and he even gave himself a job that he's very serious and dedicated to:
He asks to be let out in the yard no less than 8x a day to do his rounds and make sure there's no goddam squirrels.
He bolts out like he's shot out of a gun, to get the jump on 'em. (He's never gonna get one, but every single time he thinks,...this is the time!)

Oh, and the petting thing? I forgot, he actually paws at my hand now to pet him. He's worse than the damn cat.

Yep. Anyone who abuses/hurts a dog should be tortured to death. Oh, and pick me! I'll do it!
Dogs are super in tune with us. They know what's going on with us better than we know each other or know ourselves. They actually look us in the eye. Apes don't even do that and we're related to them?
People usually have a hard time reading me. They think I'm nuts.
But dogs and little kids? Get along great. They have better instincts than any adult human I know. So, if I'm good with them, I know I'm in the right place and everyone else can go fist themselves.
I don't talk about it because I grew up poor and it feels weird, like I'm bragging, but we have 50 acres out in the country that we're trying to finish a house build on. One of the things I think about on a regular basis is to build a few barns and fence the whole damn thing off and take in every dog. I think about possibly doing a rehab and re-home type operation, but I already know I'd want to keep them all and end up with 100s of dogs.

Kind of. I made the mistake of looking on Thursday/Friday and as much as I love a dog and miss having one, It just tore me up. I don't want a dog. I want Stella. Until that dulls down, I'll be without a dog. I also have to make sure I can provide a good home to a dog. My schedule would make it hard on a puppy, so I'll have to figure some stuff out first. For now I'm just not in the right place for it. The only way I'll get a dog anytime soon is if the stars align for a rescue type of situation. I'm not actively looking, and probably won't until next year. Stella left a big hole to fill.

If I could figure out a way to make my bills I'd love to help dogs. I've mulled it over a few times, and if I ever won the billion dollar lotto I'd build a helluva a vet/shelter locally and get some vets that I know are good people and love animals to run it. I can honestly say that my last dog saved my life, and I don't take that lightly. I owe the canine species a great deal.

Gia was just "there". We went for the dogs frozen bone treats and an rescue center was there looking for fostering/adoptions. I went right to Gia, and never left her side that day. Had our oldest drive down to see her, setup the meet/greet with Axle/Kloe and it was sold from there.

My dog is the same with crows and rabbits. They drive him nuts. He'd go from the back yard to the front yard all day if we opened the door. Well, and out the garage door cuz that idiot hasn't figured out the garage and front door open to the same side of the Earth.

He scrambles down the deck stairs so fast after animals that he looks like he's running on ice. I'm sure he's head planted into the ground a few times. And he squeaks and squeals like a pig with excitement. Our neighbor actually asked us once if he was injured because they listen to him dork-run-and-squeal down the stairs.

    They sure are funny creatures...
