    As the research goes on...

Cadillac CTS V. 2016 looks like a pretty good year to start with. 640hp/630tq and faster than the Z06

Amazing the amount of depreciation these suffer.

I had a 2016 challenger RT I got rid of along with my 09 Crewmax earlier this year because I was trying to buy a brand new vehicle and rebuild our deck at the same time. I wanted to get something like a Scat Pak back in the fleet around or a bit after retirement time in 7 years. But if Chrysler follows through on making its muscle cars all electric and I can’t find a reasonable used one I’ll probably get a 5.0 Mustang.

    getting A/C put in soon.

    It's a cruiser.

The white car is for when you want to go a wee bit faster.

I’m a ways off from retirement….however if I was closer, or had the ability it would probably be my third Fox body Mustang. This one needs to be a GT Forest green with silver body kit. If original then I’ll leave it, if it’s modded or tired it’s getting a TT 302/347…or maybe a transplant supercharged 4.6 out of a terminator.

Now if I was to just want more power for a DD then that’s a different story. So far that list is:
    -Mercedes AMG GLA 45
    -Mercedes AMG GLC 63 S(coupe)
    -Audi RS5
    -Audi S4
    -BMW X5M

Now if I’m gonna risk getting banned then that would be a 22 F150 5.0….then throw on the TT kit and bag it…because all my joints are giving up and lifted vehicles probably won’t be an option.

I built a fully loaded black wing the other day just to see what would happen. I wanna say it went over $130k. Ouch lol.

Probably just get that new Escalade at that price. I mean if I had that much laying around.

I would be looking at a slightly used model.
The prices drop rather quickly after two years.

Getting a little closer to retirement. Next month I turn 49. :eek2:

As I get closer the reality is setting in. I may retire and double dip at my current job since we can't really move until 2027-28. However, the old beater with a heater is at 161K miles and a lower mileage vehicle is welcomed for sure. A sedan is preferred since I will still have two teens in the house...but not a requirement. :D

So what has the ol' ColoradoTJ been looking at?

    What has been ruled out:

Cadillac CTS V. These are monsters with 640HP, but let's be honest. How practical is this vehicle?

BMW M series, Audi S6-7, & Mercedes C63 AMG. I love them, but they are maintenance whores.

Toyota Supra. I sat in one and no thank you. I'm sure they are fun, but not fun to get in and out all day long.

    Corvette....maybe later.

Classics. Can't get enough of them, and not sure these would make great daily's. Mechanically they would be fine I'm sure. My worry is the morons driving around here. I could see getting smashed into and not being able to replace it or be injured.

What is still on the menu:

Lexus IS F. These stopped production in 2014, but one can still find low mileage ones for reasonable (38-42K or what I consider reasonable). This car had 18K miles on it and sold for 42K. These offer some pretty good performance still today and with Lexus reliability. My current Lexus IS 350 has been really good overall.

    416HP
    371TQ
    Brembo brakes
8 speed (shifts like a grandma though).

    rwPVoJew.DRFwU0-9p-(edit).jpg

    Lexus RC F

I know, I know....but screw 'em. The kids can struggle to get into the back seat. :rofl:467-472 HP, 395 TQ, awesome interior, revised sluggish 8 speed transmission that doesn't suck....

    2020-Lexus-RC-F-Australia.jpg

Audi B8/B8.5 S4. This is a good vehicle, but finding a low mileage S4/5 might be rather hard. This one is has 20K miles for 30K

    V-6 SC 333HP 325TQ

    188c4335-2856-45eb-9d72-8e6b1c116e5a.jpg

These are hard to find as well, but are well worth the search. Cadillac ATS V 2016-2019.

464HP/445TQ, 8 speed auto. These 3.6 TT motors move and are designed for performance. The chassis is pretty amazing.

    2016-cadillac-ats-v-sedan-daily-driver.jpg

Now if finding the older sports sedan is a problem...

    CT-4 V Blackwing. 472HP/445TQ

I am 7 years out. I dumped my 09 Crewmax and 2016 Challenger RT early last year to be able to get a brand new truck and rebuild our deck at the same time.

If my powerboost holds up reasonably well for about 10-12 more years the plan had been to put at least a new Challenger Scatpack in the driveway in 7 years when I turn 50 and retire. Then figure out what I want to do with the truck 3-4 years after that. It looks like Dodge has some awesome looking designs for its next gen Muscle cars but they will be electric. I guess we'll have to check in and see how completely changing the character of a 15 year old platform that still has strong sales and a cult following after all this time without a significant redesign works out for them in a few years.

So I have to figure out whether I want to do a used Challenger or new 5.0 Mustang when the time comes.

I would just scoop up another Challenger now but I am committed to going big for my wife's 50th next year

You need to go back to the Cadillac CTS V; who cares about practicality??? Enjoy the shit out of it for a few years, while maintaining a family oriented vehicle on the side, then move on...

Used german cars are not ideal as you're the eating the majority of the repair and maintenance costs while still paying a decent price for the vehicle initially.

Regarding the previously owned Japanese or GM product... all of what you've mentioned have probably been driven hard; no way to tell, so back to buying a new CTS V

I would agree with most Audi's being maintenance whores. The B8 S4 has really been one of the most reliable ones on the road. Have a co-worker with a 2014 S4 and has 130K. No issues. However, I should error on the safe side.
The CTS-V would definitely be rodded, but they are build for it. They are a bit spendy cheapest ones in the country right now...IMG_2225.jpg

    see sig for mods.....
I haven't read the whole thread, but plan to, but here are my thoughts.

I was supposed to retire July of 2022. Planning for this, I bought and paid off my 2017 TRD Pro in 2017 knowing I was buying a lifetime 15 year (at least) truck for all the truck stuff. I then also in 2020 sold my aging 1997 BMW M3 and bought a 2020 Bullitt Mustang and also have that paid off. I now have two primary drivers that will be easy and low cost to own and maintain for the immediate future.

Retirement is looming, and I too am thinking about a retirement car/project/toy, etc. I did not retire last July but am now retiring January of 2025.

I have a 1976 Porsche 912 that I restored and put back on the road in 2015. It is SUBLIME and is willed to my grandson with conditions....... ;-) I also have a bunch of Motorcycles that I love, and have no real desire for something new two wheel wise, but I WILL be buying another car so the hunt is on!

I've been all over the map, but I have a few 'guard rails'
    1. Car will be a Convertible, or targa, or removeable top.
    2. Car will be manual trans
    3. Car will be at least 25 years old so I can register with classic plates (a one time registration and no annual inspection). It will be a toy and weekend cruiser or short tripper so who has time for all that? Save it for the daily drivers.
    4. Car will be midsize or smaller.
    5. Price cap of $25K

Recently, I have been thinking (in no order)
    - C3 or C4 Corvette
    - Gen 1 Mustang
    - Gen 1 Nova/Cutlass/Malibu etc. Convertible
    - Triumph TR6 or Steel Bumper MG
    - Mercedes SL
    - Alpha Romeo of Fiat
    - Gen 1 Boxter

I've even thought about going to a Mecum auto auction with my dad after my retirement and buying a car, though that would break my budget, but hey, it will be a lifetime goal for my dad............ What I REALLY want is a 993 Targa (last year for Air Cooled 911's) but they are in the 80K range and way outside my $$.

Then, out of the blue, THIS creampuff falls in my lap for an absolute DEAL. 40K miles, original owner (in his 90's and can't drive anymore). Always garaged, never driven in the rain or snow, perfectly maintained (while on the road), super clean in and out.
    1989-Porsche-944-S2-coupe-.jpg

It's a 1989 Porsche 944 S2. The car will need to be refreshed, has a few small issues, and I'm sure all the routine refresh, new hoses, belts (especially the timing belt) and fluids changed, etc, but the entry price is so low, and these are climbing in value. I'd LOVE to give the car new life, and will be awesome to have two classic P cars in the garage. Plan will be to keep the car 100% original/OEM. I've never considered the 944/928. Most in my price range were ratty and neglected and beat on, and all too often tracked and thrown away. Then there are the garage queens in mint condition that cost a mint. It's NOT a convertible or Targa, and white is not at the top of my list, but with a few OEM additions like the lower rocker Porsche decal and stripes, and some polished lip black center Fuch style rims the car will look great, and I was happy to find the very large sunroof panel is removeable...........

Never too soon....... As they say "Begin with the end in mind" There are dozens of paths. We chose to be 100% debt free on day 1 of retirement. We always saved and had a plan, but the last 20 (which have FLOWN by) we were more targeted especially when the last kid was through college (5 years ago). Most important for us meant refinancing the house on a 15 year mortgage 15 years ago. At the time, we also cashed out some $$ for a downpayment on a 'vacation home in the mountains'. We did some strange plan to split payments to pay 1/2 every other week. Doing so paid both off almost 2 years early. Drove the mortgage company crazy, but it paid the loans off faster.

Make your plan and work your plan. 25/30 years is a ways off, but once you are in the 15-20 year window, you should have a solid plan and work it. I can NOT believe how fast the time has gone.

Sounds a lot like our plan.
We're 2 years in on a 15yr 2% refi. If I don't pay any extra I'll be 54 years old and mortgage free.
I want to go crazy and try to pay it off by the time I hit 50, but family trips and experiences would take a hit.
I'll find the correct balance and hopefully have it paid off 2-3 years early.

Would love to buy a beach house/condo when we get closer to retirement.

I've already indicated that I have my "retirement vehicle" which is a boat. For land, it'll probably be this:

Anything in the 1978-84 realm is ideal for me. $20k-$25k gets you a decent mileage, already restored or very well maintained version. Inline 6 is plenty peppy for me and I love the lines of it.

@ColoradoTJ I know you ruled out classic cars, but a lottery winnings vehicle for me would be a '68-71 version of the above (280 SL). They are absolute works of art, and panzer tanks at the same time. I'm not dumping $125k+ into a car though. I'd rather blow that on a boat.

I'm a ways from retirement but this will definitely be part of it more than I is now. It was my dad's truck. I drive it now but not near as much as I will in retirement . Ls swapped with an lq9 and 420 hp

Saw it in a parking lot. Guy had just had it wrapped. Looked really sharp in person!
