Just left Toyota dealer in Whitestown Indiana and I had my transfer case fluid changed. They used 75 W80 synthetic and claim it is a transfer case specific fluid and equivalent to the 75w that is called for in my manual. Should I be concerned.

Nothing wrong with 75w-80 that’s what i used and what’s recommended. Great choice

Im sure it's probably going to be okay. That said it is a completely different fluid than the 75w that is spec by Toyota. The Toyota fluid is expensive but since I'm only changing it every 30,000 miles I decided to use it and my transfer case shifts just as smooth as it did new. There have been a couple reports of people having loud clunky shifting into 4wd after switching to 75w90, most likely since it is a much thicker fluid than the 75w. That said there are probably more trucks with 75w80-90 gear oil on the road than there is ones with the Toyota 75w since I haven't seen a single person who uses a dealer for maintenance on these boards that the dealer actually uses 75w without the customer actually requesting it. I think the biggest concern would be if you live in a cold climate and use you 4x4 in the winter, the thicker gear oil could delay you getting into 4wd until it's warmed up.

Find some dirt roads and make sure 4HI and 4LO shift like normal. Only way to really know.

How much did the fluid cost you?
