Have you ever tried the rubberized mulch? From your pic. it looks like a good spot for that type and should last for years...well, I'm just trying some so only time will tell.

looks great. Do you mulch with the ZTR or do you have a high lift blades and bag it?

I'm on just over 2.5 acres, so bagging would be a chore. I just let it mulch as it goes. I have "mulching blades" on it, but noticed I get a better cut and suction with the factory blades. I'll be ordering more of the regular blades soon to have an extra set. I try to sharpen once I take them off so when I go to swap, it's fairly quick. Plus, I got back and forth cutting and don't cut in circles, so it runs back over the same grass clipping anywhere from 1-4 times I'm thinking.

Sweet. Medium (typically factory) and high lift blades will really sling it. Good for striping, and bagging. Mulching blades don't give you as good of stripes as you're getting (typically). Which is why I asked.

I'm in dire need of a dethatching but time/expense/etc is pretty steep. So, I basically hay, and it turns out well enough anyway.

I wish I had more time for it. One day maybe. Hell, with all the kids I keep having, I'll have my own grounds crew soon! (Child labor laws stopping me for now). Mine needs a dethatch, aerate, good weeding, proper irritations, etc. Haha.
But, I'm still enjoying doing what I can with what I've got

Well it's that time of year, emerging grass is coming out. I've been trying to seed in centipede as I thought that's what I had in some areas. Maybe not.
Plantnet app on my phone has ID my grass, it never did before so maybe they have improved it.

    It says this is Bermuda
    AP1GczOwRXtWFETfDJ2fU5uEuRuMl2nB7Mw5zGnD_6fe9195aa298725e3da6781e244f47ef3365a3de.jpg

    and this is St Augustine.

I'm wondering if I should instead start overseeding the Bermuda, I'd like to get one grass over the entire yard.

I'm not an expert by any means, but Bermuda typically cuts better with a reel mower. I like it, but I don't have a yard level enough for that (and it's too big to have it leveled and seeded over for it). Bermuda seems to be one that will perform better when kept at 1.5" and shorter and on level ground since once you cut off 1/2", it shows the brown/yellow beneath.
St. Aug seems to grow easily and cuts easily for us down south.
It does seem to have identified them correctly.
    Again, I'm not an expert

St augustine grows a thick thatch underneath. Needs maintenance over the years. Prefers a reel mower.

St augustine is very tough, but feels like razors on your barefeet. Yuck.

bermuda regenerates well, but is so inconsistent and patchy

Bermuda uses a REEL mower....not REAL.
Most people have a rotary mower (I think that's what they're called)

    Reel mower (typically for bermuda):
    R5014832-scaled.jpg.jpg
Rotary mower (typically for st aug, fescue, etc):

When I first got this place I picked up an Eclipse Rocket Deluxe for $20. For what little grass I had it would have been great. The 2hp Briggs and Stratton carb had the wrong main jet needle valve that would run just fine until the engine got to operating temperature and the sharp tapered needle would expand and cause a lean burn condition. It really was fast across the lawn when it ran right. Someone wanted it so bad the gave me 100 bucks as is and a Honda Harmony 1011 holds my wife's butt while she spends 10 minutes cutting the grass.

Guess I need to encourage the St Augustine then, I'm not buying one of those mowers. If I got that thing I'd have to top dress the yard and make everything look like a putting green.

I got a question about Ohio. I recently had a job in Mount Vernon that I drove for. 10 hour drive for me but that's ok, I'd drive 10 hours to avoid flying. When we got in that area we all noticed that it appears the same grass is growing EVERYWHERE. No one had other grass growing and when we questioned the local folks they said they really didn't do anything but cut and they hated doing that much.

So what grass is this that grows so well up in that area? My bud and I thought it Fescue.

In Mount Vernon it's a mix of three different kinds of grass. From what I understand they call it Mount Vernon mix. Not sure exactly what all's in it. At my house I planted fescue.

Beautiful spread. What part of Ohio?

Duh. I read a few posts above and saw Mt. Vernon. I'm close east on US 36 in West Lafayette.

Good luck! I've been fighting Bermuda grass taking over my Fescue for years. I'm not sure your St. Augustine has much hope unless you kill-off all that Bermuda first. It's runners seem to pop-up and grow everywhere. My front yard (Fescue) was destroyed by fungus and army worms this past year, so I killed all the grass and aerated/over seeded with fescue again...I'll see how much Bermuda tries to come back in the hotter months. BTW, you can cut Bermuda with a "normal" mower, although the results won't be as nice as using a reel mower. Your neighbor in Anderson!

Howdy, why not just encourage the Bermuda to take over. Reason I started trying to get centipede going (and obviously failed) was someone told me what I had is centipede, just because they cut grass don't mean they can identify grass.
