This is a very vague question. Is your daily commute 3 or 20 miles? Do you need a diesel for towing?

If you're mostly doing short trips, gas for sure unless you're buying a diesel that's more than 20 years old.

Short trips are not good for diesels. New diesels with the DEF fluid and EGRs are especially troubled by short/low load trips. The MPG savings will be heavily outweighed by the time in the shop if you do short runs without getting up to temp and working the engine.

I would consider myself a diesel guy. But after about 2010 they ruined diesels with Emission stuff And once you spend about 7 grand to get it fixed on that emission stuff. You'll never want another diesel. Unless you absolutely need the tow like 30000 pounds, there is no reason to buy a diesel. You can get a gas version that tows more than you'll probably ever need.

Keep your Tundra. Drive it until it has at least a million miles. Put the money you save by not having a car loan and not having to do repairs constantly towards your gas bills.

I agree. If you aren't towing a lot of weight then the 5.7 Tundra is hands down the best 1/2 ton you can get.

That's not entirely true. 4.6L is marginally better.

Even if you are towing a lot, it's still the hands down best halfton in my opinion (as long as you're towing within its capabilities).

My FIL has an EcoBoost and I get better fuel economy than he does towing a bigger trailer than he has. He's also not comfortable going to a bigger trailer, which speaks qualitatively to the relative ease and comfort of towing with our two trucks.

Sorry, by "a lot" I meant weight, not frequency. Poor word choice on my part, and I'll edit it for clarity.

You need to quote so we know who you are talking to. :p I assume that was directed at my 5.7 comment. Do tell, how is the 4.6 better?

Well, by not rowing a lot, I thought you meant rarely towing a trailer, and for that a 4.6l would better. You'll get better gas mileage. That was for the post that replied to my post in regards to the above post about towing. Sorry I didn't quote.

Also, a 4.6L is a capable unicorn. It's very rare, so it has that going for it.

MPG difference is so close that it's not even noted in EPA estimates. I can't speak toward drivability and such because when I was buying I originally planned to tow a camp trailer, so I didn't even consider the 4.6. I have no doubt that it's capable and reliable, I just have no experience with it.

Second this. It’ll hold resale longer, it’ll tow anything you want, and the mileage is significantly better even with the emissions crap. Regarding all the regen and def stuff, take the truck out for a drive once a week and let it get hot and you should be good. If I could find a diesel that didn’t have a 150k+ miles and was still going for 40k+, I’d grab one.

Theres 15% difference in city and 17% difference in highway. 4.6L has 15/20mpg.

For every 100miles driven in city, I can drive 15miles longer and for any 100miles driven on highway, I can drive 17miles longer with my engine.

It might be only 2 or 3 mpg mile difference, but given we aren't talking about stuff like 53mpg vs 56mpg, it is a big deal.

Also, smaller v8 strikes the perfect amount of power needed to propel the vehicle because even if you gas-sip, 5.7 is just too big and it'll waste gas, but a 4.6 is smaller and it hits peak efficiency when sipped down to economical way of driving.

I know its difficult to take in, but that's the way it is. In my opinion, that is the reason for 4.6L's superiority. I am not trying to start a war, gang.

The numbers I circled are for the 4.6. It doesn't actually get better MPG. I pulled 20-22 in the 5.7 if I was trying to hypermile it. Pull any reviews for the motors and the complaint everyone has about the 4.6 is that it doesn't deliver significantly better economy. It's just a cheaper option up front.

Understood. Thank you. I stand corrected.
Perhaps the methods changed for testing.

I bet the 4.6 gets a break on insurance, doesn't it? You do have a fair point that the 4.6 is perfectly adequate for anything that won't be towing heavy or frequently. Do you know off the top of your head the cost savings vs the 5.7 at the time of sale?
