My 2023 Tundra SR5 4x4 CrewMax 6.5 was purchased with 10 miles on it on April 29th. It now has 2900 miles.

I am leaving for a 3000 mile road trip in a couple weeks. Should I change the oil at the dealer before the road trip even though I'm well below the recommended milage and time thresholds?

What would you do? I'm leaning toward getting it changed.

Yes change it before trip. Oil changes are easy DIYs.

On a new engine...yep. I would also change it out when you get back.

I'd do it regardless of engine.

No. Don’t bring it to the dealer. Do it yourself if possible.

Dealer maintenance is included in purchase price. No cost. I'd just be moving the initial change forward. Might come off the back end in 3 years.

I would have changed the original oil and filter by now.

Yes, I would get it changed now.

I'm in a similar situation. My new Tundra will have less than 500 miles on it when we leave for a 1100 mile (one-way) trip on Wednesday. I just scheduled to have the oil changed at a Toyota dealership at our destination on Friday. It'll have around 1500 miles by then.

I know there are different opinions on whether, or not, to do the first oil change earlier than Toyota recommends. It's my opinion that Toyota isn't really too concerned about maximizing the life of your engine. That would be bad for sales, after all.

The last I checked, these engines still have metal parts that shed material during break-in. If you've ever rebuilt an engine, it's pretty remarkable how much metal they shed in the first 1000 miles. I do not want that material potentially circulating in my Tundra's engine for 10K miles.

    Yes.
I’m doing same amount of miles on a road trip soon also, I’m not due for oil change yet but I’m changing oil before I leave and then after I get back.

I would, but only because you haven't done your first change yet. Yikes. Otherwise, it would be OK to go 6000 miles on a change. I prefer 5000, but going 6000 with mostly highway miles once or twice won't be a problem.

I still wouldn’t bring it to them. It’s not worth the savings. But, that’s my opinion. To your question. Yes, get it changed. Have a safe road trip.

Would I recommend? Sure. Would I personally have a dealer do it, heck no. Definitely well within my personal comfort zone of mileage on a well running (new!) vehicle and modern oil. What I don't trust is a $15/hr new mechanic to do the change properly, use the right oil, fill it properly, not over/under tighten oil filter, not install under panel correctly, etc. right before a big trip where I don't have time to fix all the crap they mess up.

I'd do it myself *maybe* if I was retired or underemployed and had extra time. Would go Mobil One and OEM filter and make sure it was right. I did mine at 5k and spilled oil from filter into the frame rail and was worried for a week that it was leaking a bit as it slowly dripped out. Don't need that drama before a big trip.

First ever oil change happens at 1000miles. Yes that's a little bit overdue.

2600 miles and my dipstick has some grey on it from the break in. Look at my pic and I have checked the oil before but this is the first time wiping the dipstick off. No glitter in oil so I'm seeing this as normal. I'll be changing my oil soon, already have the oil, just need to get a filter. Yes change you oil before your trip!

Past F150 was already too dark by comparison and unable to see the grey.

I have a 2023 Limited. I changed the oil myself at 3,200 miles. It's pretty easy.

Anyway, the fact that you're concerned is reason enough to do it. Better safe than sorry. Do it and not worry about it on your road trip.

My plan is to take it in to the dealership at 8K to get my first free change. I'll then change it myself at 13K then dealership at 18K.

Not to hijack this thread, but what oil filter wrench are you DIY oil changers using?

And do you use a hose to divert the oil that spills out of the filter?

Thanks! Nice idea on the garden hose.

By "regular oil filter wrench", are you talking about the band style, end cap wrench, or the pliers?

Are those wire harnesses? Oh man that is such a bad design. I wonder if they are oil-resistant because it appears to be easily spilled on if one is not careful.

Not sure if soy-based organic insulation will withstand oil.

I think it's worth buying the proper cap size.

I like the spring loaded type that you operate with a 3/8" ratchet. Works great in a tight space and will get any filter off, even ones for which cap wrenches slip. But you can get these Tundra off with pretty much any type you like.

Agree on this. I just bought one to use for the next change. The filter is recessed just enough that getting a band type or pliers on it has you at a bit of an angle although they work.

Do yourself a favor and get a fumota valve or something similar. No mess. No fuss. It just works.

I put one on at my last oil change. I almost want to change it early just so I can use the Fumoto!

    Getting ready to change mine.
Oil filter comparison: 10010 was just purchased from the dealership, yzzf1 is from work (toyota forklifts). We will see what's on mine shortly.

it's not the drain plug that creates a mess usually(for me), but rather the cartridge removal. My nijna skills have improved though. Few days ago, I changed oil and didnt drop a single boop of oil on the ground. Masterclass skill.

But even if you don't spill from draining you end up with a big messy oil drain pan. With the Fumoto I plan to drain right into my disposal container which is a repurposed 2 1/2 gallon plastic gasoline container.

Just a data point... I have used both. I noticed no differences in oil pressure or anything else.

I took off the same as the dealer gave me, but I understand the Ti dra were coming with the yzzf1 originally.
