This is NOT a new one but for our newer Tundra owners don’t forget your rear window rolls down if you need to haul something….like 12ft roofing panels (3). Obviously make sure your items are secured so if you stop quickly nothing moves.

My Diamond Back cover makes the rear almost level with the seats and I snugged the panels up to the metal supports for my head rest, they weren’t going anywhere. I just had surface streets for my 3 mile drive home.

I'd be to paranoid and rent/borrow a trailer.
I have done it with a 2x4 going into the rear window......but that sheet metal makes my spidey senses say No.

 

Current Safelite commercial with 2x4s to the windshield comes to mind

All solid suggestions! With 2x4’s I wouldn’t do the window trick, and I hate those stupid safelite commercials like we don’t understand what it means to have a windshield crack. I definitely thought about decapitation but the panels are 37.5” wide which means both headrests were blocking them so there wasn’t a chance they could slide forward. @Eurodriver your photo makes me think of Mater from the Pixar movie Cars

What if somebody rear ends you hard? Sure those head rests are that stout?

 

One rear ending away from your final resting spot.

 

being rear ended is the best option since that would force the sheets backward towards the vehcle that rear ended you, but that opens a new can of worms for medical liability.

the big issue is slamming on the brakes or rear ending some else. the truck suddenly stopping and the momentum of the sheets would make them fly forward.

 

The talking point is in a wide variety of wreck scenarios many things in the cabin becomes an injury enhancers for passengers. This one obviously

 

Big "Final Destination" vibes. I can see it now...

Early morning on the interstate. Logging truck ahead. Our view zooms in on a fraying strap, then ahead to a large pothole in the road. We then see several people in their vehicles behind the logging truck, notably a Tundra utilizing the rear window with corrugated tin lying on his bed cover and the back edge of his seat. The perfect horizontal guillotine. The logging truck hits the pothole, bouncing the trailer into the air, spilling logs and carnage in its wake. Our Tundra driver employs several evasive maneuvers to avoid logs and other drivers and comes to a much-relieved screeching halt.

He exhales deeply, head down. Chuckles softly. "Whew...that was close." He slowly raises his head to survey the destruction around him and notices a speeding Ram rapidly filling his rearview, its driver apparently unaware of the scene before him. "Oh SHH–"

One of the scariest moment I ever had on a motorcycle was when a 8x4 sheet of plywood lifted out the back of a pickup in front of me in Hollywood CA.
Went in the air about 10 feet and came at me horizontal.
Somehow I managed to avoid it by mere inches as it passed me still about 2ft off the ground.
That was a change your shorts moment for sure.
It created some carnage behind me when it slammed into the front of another truck
If you ride motorcycles for 50 years like I have, there are numerous tales to tell about close shaves.

Lots of speculation! Those panels are flimsy and bend easily. If in a pinch this hack works but I factored in 35mph streets and 3 miles distance on a Saturday evening where my town is slow. We all factor risk and reward, to each his own.

When you text at 70mph and glance down for 3 seconds you cover a football field of distance.

 

or as a kid sit on the wheel hump in the bed while dad is driving like a lunatic on a dirt road.

I would be more worried about scratching the soft tex seats! Most vehicles would be lower than the panels so they would hit the bumper and go under the panels.

A nice set of bed racks would certainly help to carry the long stuff outside of the cab.
