75W-90 gear oil for both diffs and transfer case

I'm planning to use “Valvoline SynPower SAE

$39 75W-90 GL-5 Limited Slip, Ultra Long Drain 500k Miles, Manual Transmission, Gear/Differential Lubricant (1 Gallon)

75W-90 Full Synthetic Gear Oil” to do a drain and fill for both diffs and the transfer case. This oil is API GL-5/GL-4 compatible. This is an 08 5.7L Tundra.

For the transfer case, I believe this will be compatible with the recommendation from the owner's manual.

However, the owner manual states 75W-85 for both of the diffs. Will the 75W-90 be an issue here? I suspect the slightly increase viscosity of my proposed 75W-90 shouldn't be an issue, but I do live in a colder climate (USDA Zone 5, -20 F).

 

I put the Valvoline in my rear differential a few hundred miles ago and the rear end hasn't exploded yet

75w90 on the diffs is fine, but I would not risk it on the transfer, that one is a straight 75 and sadly there's not many quality 75w80 oils to stay in a safe range.

 

I used this exact oil in the transfer cases and differentials in my Tundra and AWD Highlander at 30k miles.

Great price for a case of 12 on Amazon, I think it’s about 1/2 price of Amsoil severe gear. No explosions here either.

Maybe they changed the recommendation over the years. My 2021 recommends 75W in the manual.

 

On Amazon there’s a German company I think revanol that makes it I use it and so do a lot of folks on tacomaworld much cheaper than the oem one that comes in a can from Toyota

My 2017 transfer case is specified for single viscosity 75W.

 

I was going to order some Red-Line MT-LV.

 

Live in Maine and put 25k on rear with valvoline and no concerns. Over 300k miles on the gears

75W-90 is fine for both diffs and x-fer cases. My Dad’s 2010 specifies 75W-90 and it was changed to straight 75W sometime after.

Interesting. But from what I can find, the change to Toyota 75W LF happened some time in 2010 for all Toyota models. What does it say in the owner’s manual for your 2013?

75W-90 to 75W did happen in 2014. Maybe I ought to reconsider my opinion.

@epicurese if you have a 2008 model year 75W-90 GL-5 is the correct oil for the transfer case.

 

Whatever you put in there, use good stuff. That rear diff is used 100% of the time the truck is moving.

Weird for my Sequoia which is the exact same engine/trans/ tow package the manual says

Are your Sequoias 4wd?

 

I reckon they wouldn't have a transfer case if they weren't LOL yes they are both 4WD.. I suppose there is one BIG difference I forgot about the Sequoia has a torsen center locking diff.

 

High Performance Lubricants can do the 75w-85 and the 75w

 

I switched to Redline MT-LV GL-4 in the transfer case, mainly out of concern that this Borg Warner transfer case appears to have a brass synchronizer. I don't want to run into issues with the GL-5 additives in my Valvoline

75W-90 eating away at the synchronizer. Cold weather performance was the second consideration, most of my 4x4 use is in the winter.

I'm also amazed at how dark the front differential oil was at 30k miles, basically the same as the rear diff. The drain plug magnet also had a significant amount of metal sludge on it as well. The transfer case was as clean as honey at 30k miles and I honestly expected the front differential to be the same given my limited 4HI use and essentially zero 4LO use except for pulling a van-lifer out the ditch in Whistler, BC last summer. I'm guessing that the front axles spinning the gearset in the front differential still causes wear over the 2HI miles.

I'm figuring on doing differentials every 30k miles and feel comfortable extending the transfer case out to 60k miles.

 

I use 75 w90 full synthetic it's about $60 a gallon at the auto parts store no issues so far

 

I see this is an older be post and the OP has already change his diff fluid, so this is for the next person inquiring. I’ll be changing my diff fluid in a few minutes, just stopped by my local Toyota dealer to grab some fluid and they literally said they only stock
