Hey guys need some advice. Popped the hood the other day to jump someone at the gas station. I noticed what looked to me like oil on driver side valve cover.

The truck only has 31k miles and has had all service done at the dealership. I called and scheduled an appointment just got a call back a while ago saying this isn’t oil, and furthermore it’s physically impossible for oil to leak at the top of a valve cover.

I’m definitely no mechanic so I just wanted to get a few more opinions on this while it’s still under warranty before I just lay down and accept their answer.

I also had them look at my dash, which looks like a washboard with all the waves in it. And they said well we looked at another one on the lot that looks similar so they’re declining warranting that issue as well. This is my first Toyota and I love it but they were super snappy and basically said there isn’t anything else to discuss, come and get your vehicle.

Thanks, I asked him that and he said no thats not possible either. He said if they’d spilled oil during the last oil change it would’ve been burned off by now and that I would’ve seen it smoking or smelled it.

If that's the top of the valve cover, that looks like a spill and not a leak. They also don't get hot enough to burn oil off, which is literally why you notice any legitimate oil leaks in the first place. Your dealer is definitely blowing you off, but I would clean it off w/ brake clean and keep an eye on it to see if it returns. Document with timestamped pictures and if it comes back press the dealer again.

Do you have any pictures of the wavy dashboard?

Being it is the drivers side, I’d say it’s more than likely spilled oil or a funnel was placed there. BTDT

I’d wipe it down with a shop towel and just monitor it if you are concerned.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. No I do not but I’ll get some this evening when I pick it up. When I noticed it I came on here and sure enough there are several threads with the same issue on the dashboard.

Sounds like it’s pretty much at the dealer’s discretion on whether they’ll fix it or not. If I recall, one of the threads id seen where the dealer had fixed it it was basically an install issue from the factory is what he was told.

Even the service guy came out and looked at it this morning and said wow that’s terrible and will probably continue to get worse.

I know it’s a cosmetic issue but it is aggravating that their out was oh well we have another one here that looks like that so we’re not going to do anything about it. These are literally the first issues I’ve taken my truck in for, not like ive nit picked it to death.

Mine looks pretty much the same. It’s unfortunately common on these trucks.16DB9E49-2F0C-4ED0-99E4-5F8B15F5B1EA.jpg

Mine looks the same. Not sure I want a dealership tearing apart the entire dash for something I rarely notice. May cause more problems than you currently have if they don’t put everything back together just right

Get a rag and some throttle body clear and spray that area while hold the rag there to clean the oil. If it recurs buy a new bolt from Toyota. These bolts have an integrated washer and rubber seal that get hard which is why many note there bolts are loose.
