Guess what I get to do on my daughter's new sequoia! I guess the end tanks are leaking. Never saw it when we were looking at it. 35 minutes to the house and sitting idling and it started overhearing and steaming. Radiator juice on the front and back of the radiator.

 

It looks like they have a $25-$75 rebate on power-stop brake kits through Aug 15th. I think I've seen some of you running them.

Oh, and the winshield wipers don't work. Didn't even think to check em there as we haven't had rain since the flood in early June.

I've got a year before the timing belt is due so I'll wait till spring or possibly next fall to do that. It did have a sticker on it.

Saw the most bizzare thing the other day.

A 93-94 toyota pickup with a metal aluminum type cap mounted to a fiberglass cap to create a double cap. Wish I got a pic but they were driving in the opposite direction.

They weren't even the same size. The cap on top was smaller in length and width.

 

Not that bizarre but I've seen at least 5 FGT's here in town with a custom flat bed instead of a normal bed. Some look good, some don't.

One guy works at the Toyota dealership with a white double cab flatbed. His passenger door is ripped open to the point that you can see the internal frame of the door. Another guy has some kind of mechanical lift gate instead of a tailgate. People do some strange things to these trucks.

 

Just a quick question about 4wd actuation. I saw in my Toyota manual that Toyota recommends about 10 miles a month in 4wd. I also saw this statement from Shifty in his thread about buying a 1st gen:

• Also for 4WD trucks, Toyota recommends logging at least 10 miles per month in 4HI to keep things lubed, actuators firing, etc. Do it. 4WD is a pain to diagnose, actuators are expensive af and tend to get corrosion and pits on the contacts. Find an open, straight(ish) road once a month and throw it in 4HI before hitting 50MPH (you drop out of 4HI at any speed). In case you don't know, DO NOT turn sharply on pavement in 4HI on a Tundra (Sequoia is AWD/Torsen, so it's OK)."

Problem is, I live in a large city and all the roads I drive on are paved. I wanted to ask how you all were doing this? Are you all driving on a paved road in 4HI? Should I wait until the road is at least wet from rain? I have a fairly straight road I drive everyday for my commute, was thinking that might be a good road to do it on.

 

I have a dirt parking lot down the street from my house I go back/forth and turn around in using 4wd, but I don't come close to 10 miles. Usually after a snowstorm I'll get the opportunity to put 10-15 few miles on it.

If you don't have snow and no dirt, I'd probably do as you recommend but incrementally (drive small distances) and on wet ground before getting to longer distances. My truck has the difficulty getting out of 4wd if I'm on dry pavement and drive long distances (over 1/2 mile). Seems to bind although I'm not sure what's causing it because my tread depth is pretty close all around the truck and I'm driving straight.

 

You can technically engage/disengage 4HI any time you want, as long as you're under speed - the speed cap to engage is like 57mph or some weird number like that, while there's no limit to when you can disengage.

With the Tundra specifically (not Sequoia), on pavement, you want to avoid what I'll call "significant" turns, especially at slow speeds. Binding will happen. If you're doing 60mph on a dry highway and not moving the wheel past 11 and 1 on the clock to maneuver, you're not going to have any issues. And, say you had something come up that required you to make a significant turn, you can always tap the button to pop out of 4HI...

I take advantage. Any time I'm driving and it's pouring down rain, I'm throwing on 4HI for a few minutes to drive around in it, regardless the surface. Often times when I'm in loose gravel or sand, I'm engaging it also. I mean, I've got it, the MPG impact is low, may as well use it, right?

 

That should be fine. I flip mine into 4HI when it rains and I'm on a straight section of road. You can do it on dry pavement too. The main thing to avoid is sharp turns on pavement.

I don't get close to 10 miles/month but I think it's fine.

 

To this point, I know they say "10 miles" but I think the most important things are 1) You're engaging 4WD, forcing all the moving parts to move, 2) electrifying the actuators, which sweeps the contacts keeping them free of debris.

Sure, sloshing around the fluid to lubricate everything is undoubtedly is a good thing, but I believe it's more about avoiding a freeze-up more than lubrication (not that you said it was either, I'm just saying)

The RAM I had, the rear had a 3.21 ratio while the front had a 3.23 ratio. Engaging that on any type of pavement was not something you wanted to do. Sounds like they actually line up better on the Tundra.
