How much oil usage are people seeing between the 10k factory changes? Is a quart normal?

    but...my answer

I use zero oil on 5k changes.

no God fearing, self respecting, grown-ass man goes 10k between changes.

Are you putting in 8.5 quarts when you do an oil change?

I'm at 95,000 miles and do the 10k engine oil change intervals and haven't ever used any engine oil.

Point of reference: my 1997 T100 with V6, 275,000 miles, has never (I've owned it since new) used oil between changes (3,000 miles on dino oil, last two oil changes I've switched to synthetic oil and go 5,000 miles between engine oil changes).

Is your exhaust tip oily? Doesn't sound "totally normal " but if you don't observe any other issues, you're probably okay. There is an oil consumption allowance somewhere in the owners manual.

I don't think 1 quart is considered excessive though.

Not to be an insulting question, but did you check it under similar conditions.. level, engine shut off for 10 minutes etc?

I don't change it myself but have noticed a bit of usage and I don't abuse the truck. I had a 2018 SR5 5.7L that also used a bit of oil before selling at 45k miles. My old 4Runners(V6) didn't use any and I drove those to 200k miles and sold them so I was a bit alarmed by the Tundra V8 usage

I have a pcv catch can on mine and yes some your oil is going into the combustion chamber via the pcv.
I'd say between a half and 1 quart in 10k would be just a tad over normal. Really depends on how it was broken in, how many miles on it, what oils were used, how you typically drive it, etc. Long story short, change it every 5k and use 5w30.

I have a catch can on my 4.0 Runner as well, they do blow some oil through the intake too. Not much, but noticeable.

I don't and won't. That's for gas mileage, not engine life longevity.

    Too many, but not enough....
If you are having someone else change your oil, i would bet that they arent filling it all the way. 8.5 quarts is alot and i bet they are doing less. The next time they do your oil change, check the level immediately yourself and monitor it.

How much and style of driving would play a role too.

There are countless factors prohibiting a one size (or viscosity) fits all answer but 20 weight definitely isn’t it.

    my $.02

all oils are the same, change it regulary and keep it filled

Engines don’t fail based on viscosity, they fail based on starvation.

Dealerships use the cheapest bulk shit available and trucks stay running

    here endith the lesson.

Oil change places are notorious for not changing filters but that would mean the oil would stay in there. They could save themselves 2 quarts by not changing the filter and shorting a quart on the dipstick. Fuckers.....

The dealer put in 10.5 qt last time in wife's Sequoia... I guess, the mech was new to the jugs the dealer uses, so he thought he works with gallon jugs. But anyways, he is who screwed it up.

Dealerships are well informed, properly tooled and only lie on Fridays. + + +

Self performance requires knowledge, shmancy tools, messy, fraught with risk and offers no recourse. - - -
