I was spending about $3,500 annually. Maybe a lil less or a lil more

 

Fn is an idea, or factory style wheels but not sure how warm I am to non Toyota wheels. I’ll ponder.

Why change? Good q. Found someone who wants the trail teams and figure I hook that guy up and save myself storage space. Also, these big tires are expensive compared to stock size so having two sets, well, it seems a tad excessive. And the Tundra is not driven much at all since it’s third string so even more excessive, particularly since all wheels are cross compatible except for ones with big tires which might rub on the Tacomas. Plus if I ever want to consider a brake upgrade, 17’s make more sense, particularly since tires are so expensive so I don't want to buy more 16's in XXL sizes. Also seems like more 17’s in general for the bigger meat. Particularly if going to an 8” wide wheel, that just seems to be the point at which 17's make more sense than 16's. For now I keep the faux beadlocks at 16x7.5 shod with 285/75r16 coopers, run them till they age out, and maybe use the blizzark's on the Tundra next winter instead of the '05 unless I get the LSD and regear in and it handles the snow much better than before. Or just leave the AT's on all year on the Tundra, it's fine in the snow.

I could keep the TT’s for the ‘05 but I have two sets mounted and balanced on 2nd gen offroad wheels so really dumb to swap wheels just for looks, don't need the extra half inch of width for stock size and kind of nice to have matching wheels for summers and winters. Plus those 2nd gen offroad wheels are basically free and they don't look all that bad on the wimp truck.

Mostly just thinking the TT's are are nice wheels and I like them but I think I like the faux beadlocks a bit more and I think maybe having only one set of wheels for the FGT is a decent plan especially since I can always use either of the two snow sets if I had a reason.

I believe these are 17x7.5? And they are just so damn chrome. Looks like there is a 17x8 land cruiser Toyota wheel out there but it's a bit of an older style look and a 5 lug pattern:

Anyway I do really like the look of these but just can't figure out how they make sense for me, hence maybe time to pass them on to someone who wants them.

 

Kinda wish someone made a BJ press that came with two different mandrels, one short and one longer.

Or someone just sold a shorter mandrel like the one pictured here so you could swap in/out as needed for tighter spaces.

I'm shocked this isn't a "thing". I mean, I can buy the larger jaw pictured here with both of the mandrels shown, but ... then I'm out $90, and the jaw is larger, so it defeats my purpose.

Wait so are you guys swapping out the OEM jack (and stashing it in the "original" jack cubby on the driver side, or on the passenger side?) or are you just referring to that OEM one as being sufficient? I'd love to upgrade mine, I understand the mechanical advantages and reliability of a screw jack, but when I'm using that jack to change a tire or lift the truck, it's because I'm in a bind and want to gtfo of there as soon as possible.

Let me play devil's advocate. I believe you mentioned before that you don't drive much to begin with. So how long before the cost of purchase and repairs is offset by the fuel savings? Not to mention possible frame rust.

According to google, city MPG for your Tundra in stock form is 14 and for the RAV4 it is 24.

 

I always liked those. They made a limited amount with a soft top.

Not saying I want or need those but for the type of driving I do (or more to the point, don't do) scooping up someone's (going to 35's) leftovers is a nice way to save some $. Because otherwise I'll age out tires with good tread.

 

Yeah, but we get 35mpg city driving in the other SUV, and when you add in insurance (even at USAA rates) and registration ... gas savings is negligible, but exactly the kind of mental gymnastics I've been over here doing trying to justify it

 

Me, personally, I'm contemplating a block per truck w the OEM jack _or_ a replacement bottle jack which would presumably have greater range and safety than the OEM jack without a block.
Most of the time where I planned ahead I'd have the offroad 3 ton jack to make life easy, that'd be my preferred choice if available. So this is mostly for oh-s situations, presumably on road or near road, where I'm stuck and need to get a wheel change going. I'd also presumably be using the OEM tools since if I planned ahead with breaker bar and torque wrench I'd have the jack too.

I could just stash some 2x6 and that's probably a decent plan for the immediate term, plenty of scrap under my deck I can use and it'd fit OK in the RC too. Not sure 2 pieces is enough though, and those ox blox seem like they could be rather useful later on if I ever had a trailer.

Really don't know if any of the cheapo bottle jacks are a good choice or just extra headache because they won't fit nicely in the stock location. Which is probably the biggest upside of the OEM jack.

 

I use the OEM jack with wood blocks underneath for all my tire changes on the go. I have a base plate I use with it in the sand.

Depending on the terrain, you can also work smarter and dig out underneath the tire instead of jacking up the truck.





I brought a secondary scissor jack to T2S since it didn't take up much space and could come in handy with trail repairs. Eventually I'd like to invest in a nice bottle jack and the Safe Jack attachments @FirstGenVol has.

 

@des2mtn any special setup on the blocks? One? Two glued together? Is there a good size like 6x6 or 8x8 or ?

 

I still have the OEM jack. I keep the new one in the passenger side cubby.

At least 4"x6" or 4"x8" pressure treated. I don't glue blocks together. If I was going to support a lot of weight from one point and not just a corner of the truck, I'd do an actual cribbing setup like they do for outriggers.

 

Won't pay for itself in gas savings.
But,
it will allow the miles on the Tundra to stay low which pumps it's value up.
kid gets used to the vehicle, so it's one less new thing to adjust to as a new driver.
gives you a year to figure out what's wrong & get the parts in.
gives you the second year to actually get it all done.
this would allow your new tires to age out rather than wear out.

 

Use to see one of those around the beach on the weekends in a 2 door with a stick. I think it was a convertible, looked pretty sweet

Pulled the trigger on factory second ox blox max and I’ll see if that and Oem Jack can suffice for emergency liftage.
