Been doing a little research on roofing. As some know, we get that nice diamonds from the sky (hail) and replacing roofing every 3-5 years sucks.

We have asphalt shingles now, and with some of the 1.5-2" hail we can get, even the high impact asphalt shingles will not hold up. No need to spend the extra money when we just have to replace it anyway.

Been looking at synthetic shingle roofing. Expensive, but not paying 5000.00 in roof replacement every 3 years gets my attention. (could be every year too)

    https://www.enviroshake.com/products/

    Anyone use the synthetic roofs?

No roofers on here? I have some quotes out and will be contacting my insurance company to see what kind of savings I can get and if the cost is even worth it.

Welcome to the hail club! Definitely sucks. I had a thought about this a couple of days ago. Kinda wondering about doubling up steel rigid panels with a sealer around the edges. Would definitely add some weight to the dead load and not sure of other possible issues. It was just a quick thought, not much more. That said, good luck with your search!

Wait wait wait, you’re telling me the hail is so ridiculous that it destroys shingles? Does to turn the plywood underneath to mush? What happens if you get caught in a hail storm? What the hell is going to hold up to that? I have so many questions.

Hail absolutely destroys asphalt shingles. With ease. Especially when the hail seems to come on hot days when a cold front suddenly moves through. Hot shingles are easily dented and torn. Around these parts people get new roofs every 5-10 years due to hail damage. A metal roof will hold up to hail much better from a structural / perforation standpoint, but can dent just like a car and look dimply and cosmetically unappealing to some after hail damage. Shingles that are damaged by a storm are replaced by insurance companies as part of homeowners coverage. Metal roofs that are cosmetically dented will not be. Haven’t seen the synthetic materials much or how they hold up any better. Also, you do not want to be outside during one of these larger hail storms. Could literally kill you.

Well, I just got off the phone with a synthetic roofing company. I have around 36 squares (1 square=100 square feet).

    30,000 in material cost.
    45,000 in installation cost.

A smart person would get rip roaring drunk right about now at 8:30 in the morning.

$45k to install a roof? What’s involved in that?

In 2010 we had hail the size of softballs and it went straight through the roof decking (7/16" OSB) in several places. Stripped off the shingles and underlayment, then laid down a second layer of decking in case we are out of town and it happens again. Figure that way at least rain won't likely be pouring in before we return. Same shingles are still up there today with a few bruises but nothing significant. The Tundra is too tall for the garage so I just take it for an Italian tune up when hail is incoming. Too much invested in uninsured mods and I'm not willing to lose it in a damn tornado if I don't have to.

Whatever this forum told me to do
    this.

My roof last asphalt shingle roof lasted 20 years (we upgraded to 30yr shingles)...and would have lasted longer if a hail storm didn't ravage it.

my next house will have a metal roof.

have not investigated synthetic shingles...we live in Tier 2 Hurricane zone. so, not sure if those are kosher for these parts.

imagine what hail does to solar panels!

I was wondering about your 5k number earlier. Spent over 20k on mine in 2010.

My last re-roof in 2020 for around 34 squares cost me around $7500 in materials and labor. Full tear off, add ridge vents, new 50yr architect shingles. They did my shop roof too.

The 5000.00 is my deductible. That keeps my insurance premiums a lot lower. Some people do 1.5-2% of the value of the home which is crazy. Had I gone that route my deductible would be over 19000.00.

I just did a roof replacement through insurance, here in Houston, TX.
Hail damage confirmed by multiple roofing companies, and insurance was pretty easy to work with (other than USPS losing my mail with a check inside....)
    23 SQ
Mostly Owens Corning materials, Class 4 impact resistant shingles
titanium PSU30 roofing underlayment and all that

The total came out a tad under $15K, and all this because I can't find the raccoon entry point, but when they stripped the shingles, we found out where it was, the boards have some spots that were pretty rotted (this is the original roof, some 20-21 years) and I am glad to get it done. Not so much on the 2% deductible, but whatever....

Okay, makes sense. I keep mine at 2k basically for the reason you stated above, 5k repeatedly would really suck. Just too much risk here.

This is the kind of hail we get at times. When I see we have high probability of hail (usually late afternoon or evening), we stay inside.

I may lower mine down to 2000.00. It would take my premium up a chunk. Guess I will have to do the napkin math. The 5K isn't a huge deal since we put all deductibles in an account before needing them. Using all the deductibles in one month does suck.

The big stuff is usually out in eastern CO and pretty rare. Now the golf ball to baseball size....more common. Guess one has to decide which to deal with. A roof replacement or home replacement.

2k is just easy to work into the damages, which means that it's really zero for a hail claim.

Does your current/new roof have any of the hail resistant impact rating?
We don't get that much nor as big of a hail here down south but when they come they come hard....
My roofer went up the roof and within the minute and not even 5 feet from the edge: "yea, you have hail damage, very clear and very obvious...."
Not exactly what I am hoping to hear but ok....

This one is not the category 4 high impact roof. Currently a regular 30 year typical roof is 130.00 per square. The high impact is 450.00 a square (at least what we have been looking at). Our guy said with the size hail storm we had, it wouldn't have mattered anyway. It would have been a full replacement.

Probably the smart way to go. I can invest the 3K that is doing nothing into something else. Good point.
