In the process of leasing a 2023 Tundra SR, does not have a towing package installed. Hitch I can get from u-haul, but wiring harness is no where to be found. Dealers don’t have it when calling the parts dept. there was a user here in same predicament, but I can’t seem to locate that thread anymore: he did say you may need a towing relay box, that plugs in somewhere inside the truck. Wonder if anyone has found a solution to this.

or be easier to go 3rd party trailer brake adapter. they already have them for the 2022 tundra. probably cheaper hardware wise than trying to get a toyota one.

Brake controller I already have, there’s a port under the dash board that I can plug my redarc liberty pro into with an adapter. However the wiring itself, dealer or 3rd party, is what I’m currently looking for

I used the curt echo wireless brake controller. Just need a 7 pin adapter from an 4 flat and a 12v wire for charging the the trailer and powering the electric drum brakes if your trailer has them. Just goes between your trailer and truck connector.

then you have to manually splice into the brake light wiring then to make a 4 plug.

Maybe someone else can chime in, I’m sure there’s a plug and play harness out there

I would go to etrailer.com. Should have a kit they ties into your rear brake lights and runs a 12+ from the battery. Did that on my old Tacoma without the factory tow package.

I checked with them. I did the same thing on my Highlander. But the rep said they don’t have anything for 2022+ tundras, which I’m a little surprised about.

Did you ever find a solution? I'm also considering a '23 SR.

So I just checked the back of my 2023 SR, the dealer installed the curt plug. This is what it looks like behind the plug. I think there’s original wires just there already from factory. You just might need a 7 pin plug

Thanks, Woocawachie. How much did the dealer ding you to install the wiring?

Yes, all of that wiring was there on my SR towing delete already. It just plugged into a dummy plastic piece on the bumper. I actually was prying at the dummy piece at first, because I thought it was just covering the plug, because I'm a dummy. That part was super easy to change out, FWIW.

Do you have the part number(s) for the wiring harness you used? I can order the Curt hitch for about $350 and then looking to complete the install with wiring myself. Dealer also quoted me $1800 and Uhaul is around $800.

uhaul, be careful with them. ive seen them hack/slash frame work or non critical bodywork to quickly install a hitch.

they did it on my daughters highlander where they cut out a section of non critical underside body panel to fit the hitch arm to the frame.

    luckily it was a lease.

The dealer confirmed the truck on the lot looks exactly like this behind the rear bumper. So then other than the hitch itself, what wiring harness do I need to connect to the factory wiring? I know this is a super rudimentary question...just never had a truck or done any towing before. Appreciate the help!

Back at the bumper, this is the only piece you'll need to connect. They have prewired for a trailer hitches all of the way to the back bumper, but then, instead of putting the plugs back there, they put that blanked out piece of plastic. And on at least some they've shorted us the fuses and relays.

This is the combo plug [Man I hope this image doesn't look as gigantic when I post it, when I linked the URL, it looks ridiculously big]. You pinch the silver clips, and the original piece (dummy piece without plugs) pops out. Then unplug the wiring from that dummy piece (there's a tab you push down with a screwdriver, took a mintue to sort that out). Then, you snap the new one in the bumper, and then plug the wires into it. This step took like 5 minutes. The rest of the items you need is in the other thread. I was worried because there wasn't a lot of clear information on here to explain how much was needed, but you don't need to let it stop you from buying it. I have every part you need listed in the other thread - the only upside is that you might not need the relays under the hood or behind the trim in the back seat.

    And
    https://www.redarcelectronics.com/us/tow-pro-brake-controller-harness-to-suit-toyota-tph-021

You already have factory wiring you just need the brake controller and the brake controller harness that plugs into a plug under your dash board.

IMG_3834.jpg I have a ‘23 Tundra SR. It actually came with the hitch rail installed but no 2” receiver in the center! Do you know anywhere I can buy one? My plug is wired also like the other dudes and I got the link for the plug, but not sure if I need relays. How do I find out if I need relays?
    Thanks!

I’m not going to pull a trailer that has brakes either, so do I need to buy the brake controller harness. Can’t I just plug and play the bumper plug and pull a trailer with no brakes?
    Thanks!

Hmm that’s interesting. Didn’t know they had hitch bars without receivers installed on them. I’m sure harbor freight or tractor supply co. stores have the bolt on receivers. I wouldn’t tow anything too heavy with the bolt-ons tho. After you install that plug and play plug you can just get a simple connector tester from Walmart or if you want to go fancy then something like this. Shows you if 12v power and brake controller signal gets through as well. Oyviny 7 Way Blade to 12V Power Adapter with LED Circuit Tester, 7 Pin RV Blade to 4/5 Way Flat Adapter Trailer Cigarette Lighter Connector for Truck

Hey man, I appreciate it! Got the link! Yeah, the hitch deal is weird without the receiver part. If I get one to bolt on, I will only pull a small trailer like for a lawnmower or landscaping. Just stinks that it came like that, but I’m glad of my purchase. I can build it the way I want. Simple plan, but cost worthy.
    Thanks!

I’m in the same boat with the tow bar and wiring already there without plug. Ordered the Amazon plug and a curt hitch. Uhaul wasn’t able to remove the bolts to install so I guess I’m going to give it a go. Maybe they used thread lock. Anyone else had trouble?

Have you tried it yourself ? Who knows what those uhaul guys are doing. I would get a long handle wrench for good leverage and give it a go first. Then try impact wrench from harbor freight if you dont have one.

Please post pics after install. I had to buy the bumper plug, 2 little blue relays (Amazon), and now I have to get converter relay (3rd pic with quote from Toyota for converter $204) that goes behind the rear passenger seat for about $135. I think I’m looking at the same Curt hitch you are too.
    Thanks

I had mines installed by the dealer on my SR, and this is the relay that they have in that spot. If that helps. If you need additional pictures of other places just send me a pic of where it is and I’ll snap one on my end

    looks pretty cheap online

It also looks like there’s another relay in the “TOWING BK/UP” spot on the next row

The towing bk/up spot has to be filled also. I just used the two blue ones. I tested mine with tester and have brake lights only. I think the converter relay will have to be installed in order for everything to test right.
