If inflation wasn't a thing, then it could be possible. People forget that whatever they saved and have set up for a monthly dispersal won't be worth as much in the future as it is now. I'm making more than my childhood home was, but my standard of living isn't any higher. Honestly, it's probably a bit lower. Fuel costs 5 times what it used to, electricity prices are going to go up as traditional means of power generation get strangled by shortsighted signalers of virtue, and the average home prices aren't coming down any time soon so the property taxes are going to increase.

 

It's not that bad, honestly. Most of the time... Other times when you meet people they ask you what Ward you are in before they ask you your name!

 

There's a religious population, but you can still live however you please. You'd be alright. I promise.

 

Any state here in America is pretty damn good. The alternative state....

San Diego has perfect weather.
60 in winter and 70-80 in summer, but not humid.
No hurricanes or tsunamis, but earth quakes, a landslide here and there and the occasional wildfire. Best weather is closest to the coast. I'd say good luck finding anything affordable or even available, let alone a large piece in the perfect weather zone.
And the worst part is it's in Cali.

Hawaii is amazing, but the big island is still an active volcano and Kauai isn't active, but it's small and gets a ridiculous amount of rain.

I don't mind having a winter, but it's just too damn wet here and too muggy in summer. Having water is nice, but being directly down wind of these lakes makes the weather suck. And my bones hurt.
I like AZ. I like the dry. But there's no damn water unless you live along the river and forget buying property there. I really like it heading north where there's green. The problem is that it starts on fire every few years.
I've been looking for a place to live for a long time. The tradeoffs make it hard to pick.

 

The only thing I remember about San Diego is all the tattoo shops, bars, strip joints, drunk sailors and jarheads. Best thing about San Diego....catching a quick taxi to Tijuana to see all the tattoo shops, bars, strip joints, drunk sailors and jarheads......to stretch my dollar.

I am hyper cautious about food when I travel and that really sucks. But there are times I just jump in.

Ah, that's a bit odd. Still, you could go to a bar and get a drink. Restaurants have different rules there for alcohol.

 

Contrary to popular belief, the desert gets cold in the winter (sometimes in the teens at night); but what's worse is the cool/cold dry air during the winter.... skin starts to crack when there's still very little moisture in the cold air. So, I'm going w/BFE hot 4-5 months out of the year; cold and dry 3-4 months out the year; and nice maybe 2-3 months out of the year

 

It's not the cold, it's the lack of daylight in winter. Winter recreation is awesome and more enjoyable than 90+ degree days unless you're on water.

4x4 tundra doesn't need a driveway cleared before leaving. Plus I don't think the neighbors would appreciate the sound of shovels on pavement or snow blower @ 0330 to clear said driveway.

Most of us know how to drive in winter conditions and school isn't cancelled with 1/2" of snow.

Enjoy your heat, I'll enjoy my freezer.

Also we don't need extra fridge in winter time for beer, it stays cool on the back porch just fine.
