I can't crush the whole thing like I did in my youth. I have to sip on it over the course of my shift. It'll take me at least 3-4 hours to finish that one drink. Frequently it'll take me 6+ hours to drink one as I alternate with water.

 

I wanted to try the ghost ones, but they are all coffee derived.

 

Helps prevent the crash, too. When I'm super stressed I'll chug a bit, but that's for the mellowing effect. That's part of why I miss coffee. I used to be able to have a couple cups of coffee to calm the nerves and then take a nap/go to bed.

 

Ya know, I think about stuff like that all the time. While I was young and doing it, I wasn't thinking about it. Talking about stuff now I think, holy shit, that was nuts.
That's just because it all caught up with me in the last few years and now it all sounds scarier to me now than it did when I was doing it.
My whole life there were always "old timers" around that were my age now and they worked circles around everyone. One friend of my brother's back in the day, his father was climbing ladders, painting and cleaning gutters up until a few months before he died at 94. The way I used to go, I thought I might be one of those old timers.

Yes, Sean, I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Frequently called Mormons or LDS, though we don't refer to ourselves as such.

There is a huge "Mormon Myth" that the avoidance of coffee and tea is tied to caffeine. It has nothing to do with caffeine, and that is why sodas and the like are fine. There isn't a specific reason for the commandment, but people who need to have a why decided that because both have caffeine that must be the reason. That is people making assumptions and then preaching it because it helps them if they know why.

I tend to view it purely as a matter of faith. Jacob was asked to sacrifice his son, Isaac, as a matter of faith. He was halted when he showed the faith that he would do as he was commanded by God, and Isaac was spared. If he was willing to do that, why would I not give up coffee and tea when asked?

Definitely a "to each their own" situation. I can't give you a logical scientific reason why, because it's not provided. It may 100% be nothing but a test of faith. A "Will you do what you are asked?" type of thing. It's purely a matter of faith and requires a level of trust.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not the preachy type and I would be what lots of people would call a "bad mormon" because I'm not very active. I have my faith and I follow it where I can, but I don't begrudge anyone choosing their own path. That's part of why I have the faith that I do. It's one of the only ones I've ever seen that doesn't condemn you for not being a member or making your own choices. We love you all anyway!

I'll just say this: Please don't judge my faith by the idiots that claim to practice it! I've seen so many holier than thou zealots do stuff that is fully outside the teachings of the faith that I am not at all surprised by the myths that pop up. All kinds of nonsense because people feel justified acting however they want because they've convinced themselves they know better than others.
