I’ve got an SR5 with the chrome side mirrors and chrome grille. I don’t love the chrome. Considering the taco vinyl, black mirror wrap, and been thinking about trying to junkyard some parts that are phantom grey pearl, but then came across this stuff. https://www.autozone.com/paint-and-body/specialty-paint/p/dupli-color-phantom-grey-pearl-paint/292928_0_0?cmpid=LIA:US:EN:AD:NL:1000000:pBD:19486091213&&CATARGETID=120054150001288829&CADevice=c&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI2qzC6smtgAMVcTbUAR2Y5wZvEAQYASABEgIAq_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

oes anyone have any experience using this paint? I’d be willing to try it, but don’t want to do it if it’s gonna peel off in two years and I’ll wreck my oem mirrors and grille. I’m relatively comfortable with applying spray paint, but I am also smart enough to know my paint job will never beat or meet standards out of the factory. Any verdict on quality or longevity of this paint?

I don't have much paint experience myself, but I did some DIY door handles, tailgate handle and bumper covers for my 2022. The key is the prep and the clear coat. You won't find a quality clear coat in a parts store, you have to order it. There's a lot of detail in my build thread, and it's a short thread.

Painting chrome is an exercise in futility. If you can source the lower trim black plastic parts they make a better base for painting. The paint is semi-important, the clear is where it’s really at. Prep makes all the difference.

You can get powered mirrors on Amazon relatively cheap, and practice on those indoors, if garage, and then mount them to the truck if you want.

I haven't used that color, but I've used many cans of the Dupli color match series. I like it and haven't had issues.

If you are trying to paint the chrome, that paint won't be enough to adhere. If you are painting other parts that came painted (ie painting your color over a different color) then it will be fine. I tried painting the chrome on my truck and if you can find painted parts at the junk yard, I'd go that route.

If you are going to try and use the chrome. I highly recommend hitting them with a few layers of plasti dip, rattle can bed liner, let that cure and then sand it smooth. Than paint the bedliner to your color, followed by a 2k clear. Its a process but it will hold up better. I just painted the chrome and the rock chips I've picked up go all the way to the chrome... they haven't spread and flaked but its annoying.

Yeah I was just thinking sand the crap out of the chrome before I paint it and prime it. Would that work?

Oh wow. That looks incredible! Making me want to do the bumper now…

Great to know there’s a color wrap out there that’s a good match.

I painted the lower chrome bar on my front bumper. I sanded the shit out of it, then applied two coats of etching primer. Three coats of dupli-color (thankfully black is easy to match) followed by three coats of clear. It looked awesome, and held up well until I took my first road trip at highway speeds. The impact of bugs, gravel, and who knows what else created a thousand tiny dots of chrome. I touched these up one at a time, and now it's all black again...but it looks like shit!

    Don't do it!

That's the awesome part about wrap. If it gets damaged, peel off, reapply...

Perfect. This is why I love this forum. Real experience, real answers.

I'll go with the wrap - Thanks for the input!
