Any recommendations for a cheap OBD scanner?

 

For just reading codes or vitals like trans temp?

 

Android or iPhone? Cheap would be a 327 elm OBD2 Bluetooth adapter with the Torque Pro $5 app for Android.

It’d be something similar for iPhone but not the same.

 

Just reading codes. Not actively reading temps or anything major.

Iphone. Funny I think I might have something like that laying around in the garage I used a while back. Just more used to having the physical obd instead of the iphone bluetooth dongle

 

I just bought a generic plug in scanner from Amazon, something with decent reviews, no need to spend much.
It works fine, I just use it for code reading and store it in the centre console.

 

Being able to read temps can be helpful. I bought this one off Amazon and then I paid $5 for the Torque Pro App on my phone.

I'll warn you that it may do some weird things while driving. It had my ABS light rapid flash which eventually didn't matter because I pulled both ABS fuses(unrelated to this).

I ended up getting the OBDLink product. Note: I found counterfeits of their products on scAmazon, buyer beware.

I purchased the OBDLink MX+ because it was pretty limitless on what you could do, but the price point may not be palpable. I will say though, I haven't had any of the issues others have had with it throwing codes and causing mayhem if left plugged in for a period of time.

They have lower-tier cheaper products, like the LX and CX, and also wired products to use with your PC. All their smartphone apps are great. Support for the product is killer, there's always someone who speaks perfect English who promptly answers emails and tickets. You're not paying so much for the product, but the support.

Interestingly enough, their smartphone app, which works for iOS and Android, has most of the features you'll find in Torque and other apps, and dashboards look pretty similar. There are several other 'free' apps out there which are identical to OBDLink's.

I realize with the MX+ product specifically, which I bought, it doesn't fit into your designation of 'cheap'. But it came pre-packaged with all the special PIDs and crap to read codes and monitor certain sensors directly, you don't have to futz with inputting text strings and other bullshit like you do with the cheap scAmazon bluetooth dongles so ... again: You get what you pay for.

American designed. Chinese made. And actually, the 'Chinese made' part is why they're having knockoff issues on scAmazon. Sometimes they do have coupons you can find online for heavy discounts on their products.

Wow that’s pretty cool, thanks for all the info. I’m looking at their cheaper options now. Lots of neat information there. I agree, you definitely get what you pay for. That being said I’m jobless at the moment, might have to go for the cheapo dongle for the time being.

That’s pretty cool too, I’ll check it out as well.

My thought process is similar too. Would love the fancier obd scanners, but gotta save a few bucks so the cheapo plugs will have to work for now

Good progress on camper so far!

Wiring secured inside, and extra pos/neg power lines run to battery.


Idiot proofed the battery leads.


Put the battery back on.


Had my neighbor come down with his truck, and we tested the harness. All lights work with a truck. Brakes never registered.... put the panel back on on the interior. Need a new trim piece and paint.


After he left, I routed the clamps for the trailer plug. There's another clamp underneath the camper to make sure this won't droop down to the asphalt.


Everything works as should. Finishing touches now are as follows:

1. Remove wasps at night.
2. Install fire extinguisher.
3. Acquire trim.
4. Cut trim.
5. Mount, and paint.
6. Schedule inspection.

Nah - they're for the Thanksgiving turkey & the Christmas ham. it's showmanship.
