    A little cross posting as there are several threads on the topic of transmission temps.

    "We just got back from a 3500 mile trip in the Western US. We saw high ambient temps as high as 106* and numerous climbs of 7+%. This is the first pull with the trailer, 6500lbs with an auxillary transmission cooler in series with the stock cooler. I can report that this set up, two coolers and the thermostat pinned open, is the mack daddy for keeping this tranny cool. The highest torque converter temp I saw was 222*, and the highest pan temp was 194*. Most of the time, on the steepest long climbs the TC temps would just break over 200* and the pan temps never got out of the 180s. On the flat and level, at about 90* ambient, temps were running about 160-164*. I pull at 60mph and I'm in S-4 while towing. Steeper climbs I will drop down to S-3. I now can say that the Tundra is a good tow vehicle."

    It looks like Toyota stopped installing the auxiliary transmission cooler and not just the temperature gauge. My truck had this installed from the factory:

    It's a shame that Toyota did away with these two items on a "tow package" though I do wish that the factory transmission temperature meter had some numbers on it.

    what PIDs are you using to monitor trans temps? I have a BAFX Products 34t5 Bluetooth OBDII from Amazon and I'm using Torque Pro, but the PIDs I'm using for trans temps are not showing accurate temps. Possibly the OBD reader I have isn't reading correctly. I'm not sure

    The Tundra comes with a tranny cooler in Gen 3s. It is the top 7 or so passes of the a/c condenser. True there is no gauge, but really using an OBD reader type of gauge system like scan gauge is better. The stock cooler is inadequate, and the thermostat for the tranny opens too late. Those are the issues. All very fixable, just disappointing to have too on this truck. Other issues Toyota messed up with their "wonderful towing package", is the brake controller.....doesn't work. And it doesn't come with tow mirrors......I think the Japanese have difficulty understanding what Americans expect out of a tow rig.....

    I don't agree with you that there are issues with transmission cooling. Tundras are not blowing transmissions left and right because of inadequate cooling. I think you guys are trying to fix something that isn't broke and doing a whole lot of arm chair engineering.

    I don't need to provide more than I have. These trannys run excessively hot when towing....with some mods, mine now runs where it should. Given only a fraction of Tundra owners tow in the upper 75% of the rated capabilities, the amount of failures would be a fraction as well. Then when you remove those towing live and tow in the flat lands of the US, the fraction is even smaller. Given several on this forum discovered their fluid was burnt, as in other forums, is indicative of a problem.

    You get on here making a claim about the lack of failures of these trannies with no data what the actual failure rate is......I'm sure if your point is important to you YOU can spend YOUR time to prove your point. I'm certainly not going to waste my time on your point, as I have already proven mine. So tell us what the actual failure rate is, and compare that to the number of owners that tow heavy and live/tow in mountainous areas. When you come back with that data we can talk. But drive-by opinions are just weak.....and you know what they say about opinions, especially those not supported by facts...

    So let me get this straight. You say the temps get too high, fluid gets burnt, and its indicative of a problem.

    I say the transmission cooling works fine. But I am the one who is supposed to prove that transmissions aren't failing???

    whatever homie. I have been driving tundras since 2011. One time I towed 12k from AR to CA. I am frequently crossing hundreds of miles at a time in the desert in 100+ temps mashing throttle in 4wd with 35" tires or climbing mountains in the same kind of heat. I have run with dozens of tundras in similar conditions. I have never heard of a transmission failure from anyone I know or anyone I have run across at meets. I am thoroughly convinced that there is nothing wrong with the transmission cooling. I am convinced that the temperatures that you are observing are within toyota spec. If you see burnt fluid, change your oil. If you want to waste time logging temps and adding additional coolers, do your thing. I'm not going to worry about it. I'm just going to enjoy my truck

    My worthless .02: If someone wants to try and improve (whether it's necessary or not) something that Toyota has designed- it's their money, and their truck. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

    The only transmission failure I know was on a Gen3 and died because it overheated due to it being caked/packed with heavy mud from being used on a farm daily.

    2"CB shackles, bushings and 1 shim, lockerdown console vault, rear folding seat back mod, snugtop shell with opening side windows, 46g fuel tank, SDHQ sliders and hidden winch, Decked Drawers, Alcan leaf springs and got rid of the interior chrome
    Nope, not a single tundra trans failure that I've heard of. I'm sure they're out there, just pretty rare.
    Also, I have to believe, maybe even a majority of tundra owners tow. I see literally dozens of small contractors pulling their work trailers and most of the rest of us got the tundra to pull a boat or camper. This is my worthless.02

    Edit: I've lived my entire adult life in AZ and adding oil coolers to engines and transmissions is always a good idea I've added em to Chevys, Harley's, and Volkswagens.
