It gets on my nerves when there is a sidewalk they could do that on. If someone is not paying attention you will get injured so why risk it.

I have walked in our neighborhood for over 30 years, in the street. I have never been hit or even a close call. I am aware of my surroundings and watch for vehicles. If you are walking or running in the street playing with your phone or not paying attention it’s your fault.

I walk / run on sidewalks for about 15 years. I've still had about 50 close calls, maybe more. and hit (not bad) about 15-20 times cause I always see it coming. people don't look both ways or stop. I could avoid all of them, but I make it a teaching moment for them they won't forget anytime soon.

I like to think they start looking both ways and or come to a stop when getting on a main road from a parking lot afterwards.

I would never pick the street if there is a perfectly good sidewalk. My neighborhood doesn't have sidewalks so we have to walk in the street and I typically try to walk on the left side so I don't have traffic coming up behind me on the same side.

Even worse, they walk on the road in dark clothing at night when the sidewalk is less than 4 feet away. Then if I hit them, I would be at fault. WTF! Damn crazy world nowadays!

I like to walk on sidewalks so my dog can poop next to the car doors of street parkers. He knows what we're doing too, i've seen him smile about it.

i'm not really a runner but a few things come to mind... a non-interrupted running surface, roadways are maintained more often, asphalt is softer on joints than concrete, asphalt tends to be rougher meaning less slips when conditions deteriorate, wider margins meaning groups can run together, runners are more visible in the roadway.

A couple of runners I know told me it's mainly because asphalt is softer than concrete ^^^ so not as much impact on knees, ankles, etc.

Through decades of exhaustive research, I've developed a strategy that's even less impactful and taxing on my joints. I don't fucking run.

I mean, maybe if there's a monster or Rosie O'Donnel chasing me, but even then I'm gonna' turn and fight long before we get to 26.2 (or 1) miles.

Not only is running bad for you, I also worry about sink holes. Ya just never know, those things can pop up anywhere, at any time. Not worth the risk.

It mostly depends on where...but if I'm running in a low traffic neighborhood residential are I prefer running on the street to avoid tripping hazards from un-even sidewalks that have lifted from roots, frost heave, etc. If I'm on more of a main road, then yes its sidewalk only.

In my neighborhood when walking my three dogs, I'm usually in the street. One for width; three dogs, the sidewalk gets pretty narrow. Two- for meaningful forward progress. On the sidewalk, the little buggers insist on stopping to sniff & pee on EVERYTHING!

Out by me it’s runners and cyclists on 50+ mph country roads with semis, dump trucks, and concrete trucks driving just feet away. I really think they want to get hit so they can sue for money. Or they are self centered and enjoy causing traffic jams during rush hour traffic. I always beep my horn at them. Some of these guys get all pissed yelling and giving me the finger. I’m laughing the whole time. Lol!

I've been a runner for quite a few years. When I'm on the road instead of the sidewalk, 99% of the time its because the immediate sidewalks are complete crap and are like running trail. The other reason is an obstacle (many times people park on the sidewalk). Other times its because there is no sidewalk.

But most of the time I try to run where there's little to no traffic, but those places are dwindling because you get chased (eg. warehouse lots, schools, etc...)

For some reason the crown kills the side of my foot instead of my knees. If I've got 25-30 miles for the week, the side of my left foot gets sore (running left side of road)

I'm fine with people running, walking or riding a bike in the road. But when I'm in charge, I'm making it a law that you have to wear one of these. Or you get a fine, just like you would if your vehicle is on the road with non working lights.

I love all the genius city planners that plant trees in the 2' wide strips of shit soil between the roads and sidewalks.
Even better when they plant them directly under power lines.
