Currently I only turn it off when loaded up with camping gear and mt bikes (not towing), and it’s lugging up a steep grade. I’ve always wondered though if that is necessary and what gear it shifts to. The rpm’s jump quite a bit, so maybe 3rd, but not sure. Thoughts? Thank you

    2005-2006 auto should be 5AT, so I'd expect it's dropping to 4th.

I tested it this weekend loaded up, on steep climbs and I think it does drop to 4th. Rpm’s shot up about 500. Thanks!

While "what gear it shifts to" is a valid question, it was more important to me when I finally understood OD better. While I don't tow that often, I do use cruise pretty much regardless of speed limit, which means when approaching hills I would apply pressure to accelerator to keep rpm's at or above so the eng does not spaz out dealing with torq converter. I'm also getting better at utilizing OD off when approaching a hill, knowing a torq convertor won't stay locked with OD on.

This is one of many posts that helped me understand better....

Great info and thankfully that’s what I’ve been doing. As soon as it starts lugging up a grade, I’ll slow down a bit and turn off OD.
