know those are the bikes that most of the jackasses tend to do stupid stuff on and make cars hate bikes - Yup, plenty of a-holes on the crotchrockets but they run in all circles from my experience. Time and place to do silly stuff is on the track is my way of thinking. I'm an old fart @ 56 but I have been riding bikes hunched over all my life. My current hunched over pedal power bike-

The motorcycle, like I mentioned previously is a "true" beginner's bike. 2021 R3, second owner. It's a wheezy bastard and can't even pop a wheelie but comes alive and feels at home in the twisties. The sole reason I bought it was to cruise twisties and push its limits on the track. Don't tell my wife that though

I read something the other day that said based on property costs, inflation, current interest rates, etc... The median income now required to own a typical home is averaging over 108k/yr. A few years ago, the median income required to own the same home averaged to be about $58k/yr

 

Well, I haven't made as many trips 'round the sun as you have, but I'm fat, so I think you're still better off.

If you want something that's a step up but not crazy expensive, keep an eye out for V-stom 650s that'll probably be popping up as the new 800DE starts arriving. As long as you are mostly pavement the V-Strom 650s are a solid "tame" bike.

I would recommend the same one I'm on if you want a new bike that's cheap. Far from a speed machine, but plenty fast enough, great fuel economy, long oil change intervals, and they never die if properly maintained. It's never going to blow your socks off though.

 

Yup. When I changed positions at my company 5 years ago and started making better money I started thinking about building a house. Now? I might ve able to do a small bachelor style place. It's insane.

I did what most kids do, only I did it at 35 yrs old. Always thought racing bikes were cool and wanted one since a was a kid. Finally got to scratch that itch and bought one. Rode it for 3 yrs, crashed it, fixed it back up, sold it to a friend.
I think most kids crash them and get scared away, get killed or crippled, or simply grow up and grow out of it. Yes, kids do stupid shit on sport bikes.
However, by a loooong stretch, the worst riders, most inconsiderate riders, most, well,...not very coordinated and not good at riding, are the biker in a bag cruiser riders.
Or the wannabe sons of anarchy riders. I see more of those than crotch rocket douches the last 10 yrs or so. Or, at least I notice them more because there's more terrible riders in that group.

 

Oh there are definitely jackasses on all types of bikes, but cruisers aren't usually rev bombing, illegally lane splitting, popping wheelies, diving in and out of traffic at 120 MPH, etc. There's also a higher ratio of squids in flip flops and beach shorts in the crotch rocket scene. The cruisers tend to prefer the leather daddy pirate vibe. One screams midlife crisis, and the other screams YOLO while vaping and doing keg stands.

I live in a beach area. Your squid description is spot on. But, there are many that don't fall into the squidbilly stereotype and ride safely. I do see a ton of unskilled SOA wannabes in the area as well. They are the majority splitting lanes (on the right) on a two lane, heavily trafficked area with a mix of parallel\diagonal parking. I can't count how many times I have seen these idiots get right-hooked or have had doors opened on them doing that stupid isht. Get what they deserve IMO. Will they learn? Probably not.

Lane splitting is LEGAL out here and I do take advantage of that by filtering through traffic on a multi-lane street at a stop light. I am happy to stay where I am if traffic is moving along. No need to piss people off.

 

Yeah, stupid is not reserved for any one group but, sadly, it only takes one guy being an ass to get all motorcyclists a bad name. I guess out here the cruiser group isn't as dumb. They'll roll through in big groups on the interstates, especially around Sturgis time, but they are generally not total bone heads. I've never had them be more than a bit inconvenient as you have 50-60 bikes moving and passing as a group, so it can take a bit for them to go by.
