That's why they call it a 'slip yoke' bro

It slips in and out on splines. Visualize what would happen if your rear axle engaged the suspension over a speed bump and it didn't slip in/out ...

Since 'drew is in the house, any chance you know if it's possible to clear the airbag code via techstream?

Maybe my memory is wrong but I don't remember having to remove timing covers to get the serpentine belt tensioner out when we replaced @jpink 's

At least I know the belt still looks good.

Dude, I've done that job before. Absolutely insane how much has to come out before you get to it. I had a shop do some work and shortly after, my truck sounded like it was coming apart. Long story short, the bolt was mostly sheared off and seized, so I had to replace the whole thing. I love how the Haynes book says "remove the bolts holding in the assembly" and that's it.

Did you take the radiator out or work around it?

Absolutely. I knew better than to attempt it with the rad in place. I'm also replacing the alternator too.

Nice! I had a similar thought of, "well shit, I could just replace the alternator and ps pump while I'm here", but was one of those 11th hour jobs.

Thankfully the power steering pumps seem to last forever. I've only seen a few members have to replace theirs. :fingerscrossed:

Do y’all have to pull the radiator for that job?

Yeah, just tends to moan slightly regardless what it has going on. Never understood that, but I've heard it on almost every 1st gen.

Will moan a lot more (continually) if the fluid level mistakenly gets low due to a leak.

Totally, that's what spooked me the first couple of days I had the truck. I was, like, "how tf is the power steering pump moaning already, and it's barely got 60k on the clock?!"

Then I listened to a few more online, and I've since put my hands on other people's, and ... it's rare not to hear one that's got it. I wish there was an additive or something that would help... maybe the pump just isn't over-beefy like some others make theirs? Going for Longevity vs. Power?

Almost done here. Replaced the alternator, upper radiator hose, serpentine belt(Gates HD) and belt tensioner. Trying to get 3 gallons of coolant back in it after draining almost exactly 3 out of it.

May as well keep the old one, rebuild it. It's really, pretty simple to rebuild them if you never have (I can't remember), and always good to have a spare on-hand. I see your green!

Congrats on finally getting this done!

I’ve had great success with Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak for groaning power steering. I haven’t really used it to stop leaks even, just noises and they go away and don’t come back.
I’ll just suck out as much as I can from the reservoir and top it up with the Lucas, good to go.
I try and avoid fixes in a bottle type stuff, but it really has worked well and I can’t see how it could do any harm like some crankcase additives could.

Just throw a spoon or two of fabric softener in the PS fluid, problem solved. Did it to mine and it fixed the whine. I'll keep preaching it until you all do it. And that tensioner job is complete bullshit, did it a couple of months ago. I usually do some recon before a job, but figured its just a tensioner and it should be a piece of cake. Total PITA. Anyone considering doing this, might consider just changing the pulley. Pretty sure that was the culprit on mine, as the tension was still good on the old one. Would have been cheaper and saved a ton of cursing.

Yes it is. I've had this one sitting around since 2019 when I replaced my radiator. I went to install it back then and tapped out. Since I was replacing the alternator today it was the best time to do the tensioner.
