Need some advice/ideas: Wanting a toolbox in the bed under my bed cover, suspended up off the bed floor like the BakBox or Diamondback box. However, I have a RuggedCover brand tri-fold of which only flips 2/3’s (back third closest to cab doesn’t open), so was hoping I could find something that would slide back and forth along the rail, then access by sliding towards the tailgate with the first 1/3rd of the cover open.
Has anyone seen a product like that, or created something similar? Doesn’t have to be big, only would be for holding hand tools, ratchet straps, etc. Also have a tailgate extender but I only use as needed, so not too worried about it.

IMG_7927.jpg You should look at the swing case. You can get them for either side. Had 1 in my last 2 tundras. You will have to lose the bed extender though.

I used L brackets bolted into the factory cargo rail bolt holes with a board the width of the truck. Used weatherstripping on the front edge to make a flexible lip. It’s been in place, and loaded with straps, a tarp, umbrella and other crap for a few years without an issue.

This is pretty close to what I had in mind. What kind of L brackets? Fab'd yourself or like the kind used for uni-strut?

yes pretty close to that style. I had a bunch of the brackets I acquired years ago from an old warehouse closing.
Do you have the deck rail system in your truck?

Sucks you have to open the entire cover to access it..
With a swingcase you don't have to open the cover at all..
It SWINGS out over the tailgate...

I’ll look around for another, if I find a pair I can send you a set. If not, at least you have an idea of what was used.

good point. however having to open the cover to get something to use off the shelf, is most likely because the cover is going to need to be open to secure or load something.

I still like the swing cases, but this mod was less than $5 and has worked wonderfully for years.

Thank ya sir for the measurements, I'll be able make something from that for sure. I'll post up my idea after I have a few days to put something together

SwingCase requires that you remove the tailgate anchor from each side to mount it on Gen2.5 Tundras. I don’t like losing the lower anchors. Anyone know of alternative lower anchors on/near the bed (not rails) that won’t get in the way of sliding items in/out?

The swing case has a hole in the base to be used to put a padlock on to prevent theft in an uncovered bed.
You can use it as a tie down anchor.

I have anchors on my bed rail, so it wasn't an issue for me..

I didn’t like that idea either (I live in salt for 6 months) so I un-swung a swingcase and “mounted” it to the bed rail. I’m not on a NASCAR pit crew so I don’t mind rolling back my tonneau a bit to access the tools.

The brackets I made are turds and it wasn’t until after I assembled everything that I came across Bay Area Metal Fabrication’s universal rail mounts. Ordered a couple and found they were a little short so I asked @jlee to customize some with longer lengths when he can get around to it. So when they’re finished I’ll be installing with those just to clean things up and “polish the turd” as the saying goes.

Another shout out to @snivilous for being awesome and having a good sense of humor.

Here’s the link to the fabrication catastrophe that brought this dumb idea to life.
    Godspeed.
