Turbo Maintenance

First turbo vehicle. Just wondering if there’s anything I need to be checking on or doing to extend the life of this thing

 

I agree. However, I was going to do a first one at 1,500 but it looked practically new on the dipstick. Doing a lot of highway mileage. So I'm just doing every 5,000 oil and filter. Plan on doing air and cabin filters every 10,000.

 

Run 91+ octane fuel, and follow 5,000 mile OCI as outlined above.

 

You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make em drink it. Cheap insurance if you ask me. I did an oil change at 1k and another at 1800. To each their own, YMMV…

 

Warm ups and cool downs are critical as well. Don't accelerate hard until engine is warm. Last but most definitely not least, cool down idle period after working it such as highway driving or especially towing will help extend turbo charger lifespan. Let the engine oil pumped through turbo bearings and the intercooler coolant carry the intense exhaust heat away before shutting off engine.

 

Pretty sure you don't have to worry about turbo cool down like you did on some older vehicles. The new turbo's have their own water pump and fans that run separately to cool them down if needed even after the engine is shut off.

 

Modern turbos are cooled even after shutting the vehicle down. That's good advice, but it's outdated.

 

Review page 176 of your owners manual... Cool down still definitely can't hurt, but absolutely help. Keeps oil captured inside hot turbo from being baked into a thick tar.
Have replaced turbos on other brand modern vehicles at our shop that have had apparent history of being "rode hard and put up wet"

 

I didn't buy a turbo truck. Just speaking from another turbo vehicle I have experience with. I'm surprised Toyota would be behind the times on a reliability improvement.

 

My last 5 minutes of driving is not pedal heavy . Just to let the turbos cool down . I wasn’t aware that they have they can keep cooling down even with truck off

 

Just buy OEM or top quality air filters. All these trucks pull a lot of air and will suck a cheapo air filter straight in killing a turbo

So idle for 1 min after I compete at Pikes Peak, got it.

 

I always let mine idle for a few minutes after towing. Even though the coolant will keep circulating if needed, keeping the oil moving through the turbos most certainly doesn't hurt.

 

Turbo cool down just like oil change intervals....

It's a question of surviving or thriving...

 

Is there any difference between turbo cool down on the hybrid or ICE engines? Hard to idle in the Max when the engine is already shut off.

 

Agreed. Turbos are very hard on oil.

 

I think doing one at 1,000 is good advice. That said metal in the filter is a good sign. It means it isn't flowing through the engine. The filter is doing its job.

 

The turbo is just like your garbage disposal....you need to shove some ice and lemons in there and fire it up. Will be citrus smelling fresh in no time.

The most crucial, fresh cool oil needs to circulate to those turbos bearings, I leave mine cooling for about 10 minutes… Let’s not forget those lovely rod bearings benefit from the cool down cycle.

I even do this for my Mustang to cool the whole drive train including the transmission.

Toyota tuned the engines for 87 octane. You can run 91 if you'd like, but it's not necessary nor will running 91 vs 87 provide any additional benefit to maintaining the turbo assembly.

 

91 octane vs 87 will have no effect on turbo charger life. The V35A engine is tuned to accomodate 87 octane but based on knock sensor feedback will advance ignition timing using higher octane fuels giving significant performance/torque increases

Most people dont slam on their brakes going freeway speed and then immediately turn the truck off. Usually there would be a good amount of time coasting and the engine idling before you actually come to a stop and shut down.

But I supposed there could be an odd situation here or there.

 

You have to worry about piston rings, since they cook, too. No use in good turbo if the engine got compression rings stuck.
