Yeah, I planned that once but never did it. Just can’t see doing that consistently and definitely can’t expect anyone borrowing it to do so. A bit too inconvenient.

My stereo has the faceplate that comes off. I haven't heard of anyone stealing those but I could be wrong.

They made them up until somewhere in the early 2000s though. JVC KD-HDR1, look it up.

No need to get defensive... I didn't even use an emoji on that one :D

But, had I chose to use an emoji for emphasis it would have been this one ':boink:'

Not really defensive about it, it's just what I have. Haven't justified a need to upgrade yet especially since my truck is on it's last legs.

I like the idea of creating a faux flip down or completely-removable faceplate using an OEM radio to hide my aftermarket radio. I remember folks leaving their factory radio in the dash back in the day and just unplugging it behind the scenes, running a longer harness to either the glovebox or the center console and installing an aftermarket unit in there. Of course, back then it was mostly single din units not the nice fancy Android Auto units we have now days are front and center in the dash.

Time to install some more arms, then you can run it like a dog. Or is it legs? Ah, hell with it.

It’s all about what it would take to get the frame fixed. Everything else is secondary.

Helped a friend of mine install what's roughly the double-DIN version of it, the KW-850BT. He likes it.

I wish more people made OEM-like (i.e. with volume knob and typical modern amenities) like what Kenwood was doing for a while. (example)

I just hate how shiny Kenwood makes all their stuff, makes it look cheap to me. I find matte finishes more appealing. JVC and Kenwood are the same entity for the last 10-12 years, merger is long finalized. Any product you find for JVC you'll find the clone in Kenwood.

My stereo works fine, but the head unit in the sequoia had a shit volume knob, and i think that was the reason i put a kenwood in the 5runner, volume knob being dumb.

One of the cars my dad had when I was growing up had a radio with a folding handle and you pulled the whole radio out; before they figured out removable face plates I guess.
I thought it was pretty silly and I don’t think he ever removed it.

When I decided to upgrade the slow Stync system in ye olden Ford, I was happy to use the iDatalink interface which allowed me to keep my steering wheel controls and the main thing I wanted to make sure I kept functional, the large-and-easy-to-grab-and-turn-while-wearing-gloves volume control on the dash. Gotta have that physical volume control.

    Physical Controls > Touch Controls.

Now I'm saving up to get the Kenwood DMX958XR which will go in the Ferd and the Ferd's current Kenwood will get handed down to the Tundra to replace its current Kenwood. This will give me Wireless Android in the Tundra. It currently only works wired.

The gravy thing of the iDatalink interface is it gives you the option of reprogramming buttons. At least mine did. I removed the CD Player from the Ferd and there behind the faceplate sits my Kenwood mini 4ch amp. I was able to reprogram the original CD Eject button as the Turn The Screen of button and it works great with my Kenwood. Works great when driving at night out in the boonies and you need to lower the brightness of the stereo in the cab.

If I recall correctly, I think the iDatalink has a press and a press/hold option for all the various dash and steering wheel controls. One of these days I will play around with it some more.

    Nope.

I'd have it on the touch screen instead of up down volume buttons. The wheel controls are fine as is.

Man I miss that push volume dial to mute function too

I need a volume knob on the wheel on the dash on the stereo and on the door panel. I need a volume knob for my volume knob.

Yeah that push to mute was awesome. And the dial as well. I connect my phone w/ Spotify via BT for music, so when I first get movin it’ll lag sometimes connecting. When I’m not hearing music, by instinct I’ll volume up…… way too far. Now that I’m thinkin about it, that is probably how I blew my sub. Anyways, my point is, you just can’t turn it down fast enough with the push button volume as opposed to the dial knob. I’ve never had wheel controls but it seems like they’d be pretty sweet. My HU came with a remote. Think if I ziptied it to my wheel it would be the same thing?

for reference my HU is a Pioneer AHX2500, double din touch screen, no volume knob

Yeah but I’m talking about like a regular remote. Looks like it goes to a dvd player or a fancy ceiling fan. Honestly tho, wheel controls seem like they’d be cool, if my truck came with them, but I can’t justify going to the great lengths that people do to add them. I mean, my stereo is literally within arms reach at all times.
