I'm looking to replace the OEM fog lights and am considering the Squadron R from BD.

the Squadron R-SAE says it is "road legal". Does this mean that the Squadron R-Sport are not street legal?

Correct. Without the SAE approval and listing, they are not street legal. I have Squadron Sports with wide cornering amber lenses in my fog locations and use them all the time without any hassles. I very rarely get high beams flashed at me, but it’s happened a couple times.

Mine were bought when the only difference between Sports and SAE compliant modes was a housing piece that blocked light in order to pinch the beam down. My understanding is that the new SAE model is a full redesign…. @Baja Designs should be able to help with technical differences.

I’m the end, you cannot go wrong with BD product. I love mine. I’ve got the fogs, S1 reverse lights, a 30” OnX6 in the front bumper, and a 40” S8 that I still need to stick in the hood bulge. I also need to get some SDHQ hood hinge mounts coming for a spare set of Squadron Sports that I’m sitting on. Shit, even my tractor has 4 Squadron Sports mounted under the canopy for night work!

@memario1214 is a well respected dealer on here and should also be able to help point you on the right direction.

Appreciate the ping good sir! :fistbump:

You are about 95% of the way there on this explanation as well! There's also a couple more differences between them that separate the two. The SAEs (both current and last-gen) draw less power to keep output intensity values below legal thresholds. The new SAEs are much more powerful than the last, but for reference the squadron sport pulls 2.2A whereas the current Squadron SAE pulls 2.1A.

Also, the Squadron SAE lights have gone through a couple of iterations to help control their uplight (aka the light that blinds oncoming traffic). The very first ones didn't have any limiters at all, but used a slightly different internal optic to attempt to achieve the road-legality. This... wasn't great. Tons of uplight, and no clearly defined cutoff almost at all. They then made a mid-cycle revision where they added in that black "sunglasses" looking piece to help control the uplight. It did help some, but it came at the cost of knocking down output values in general on a light that already wasn't super impressive.

I am happy to say that their newest SAE lights that have the fully encapsulated optic + a power boost are a MUCH better light than the first attempt. No one should be running the old lights at this point, especially since BD is offering a free upgrade program for Gen 1 and 1.1 SAE squadrons.

@Chad D. gave you the meat of the answer, and I just tossed in some potatoes here! The squadron sport is not a street legal light, regardless of the optic installed on it.

If you're on the hunt for these lights or have more questions we are happy to help over here at Hotshot Offroad

Hey @Sleeper16plat, As others have mentioned the Squadron SAE light is the only road-legal light that we have on the market at this time. This being said any other lights that we sell are strictly designed for off-road use only. If you are interested in those replacements I am able to offer a forum member special on all direct orders. Feel free to email me at brandonk@bajadesigns.com.
    Best,
    Brandon
