Is 330k miles too many to buy?

I'm looking at buying a 4.7L 2004 double cab tundra, and I'm trying to decide - is 330k miles too many?

It's been well maintained and has a lot of new suspensions parts. The frame is rock solid. Engine and transmission are original - theoretically it runs great and doesn't burn oil. The asking price is around 6k

Just trying to decide at what point it's too many miles.

At what point do people typically see more serious engine issues (bad compression, burning oil, etc) or transmission issues/failures come up? I know typically the frames go first, and that people always say they go forever and not to worry about it, but trying to decide if this would be worth considering - I feel like in a lot of cases if it's highway miles and the fluids were changed this one is about as likely to keep going as anything else, even with substantially less miles, but I'm not sure.

Also, even if the engine and transmission are fine, I don't want it to turn into a cash pit - I do almost all of my own work though, so repairs would be cheaper, but still can add up, or be annoying.

My boss bought his 03 sequoia with 396k miles. If he didn’t buy it, I was going to. The million mile tundra had a 4.7. These engines and transmissions run forever if properly maintained. It all depends on the po’s maintenance and willingness to invest money along the way on everything else. $6k is kinda steep, except if it’s a west coast truck.

 

You sound like you’re well informed and if capable doing your own work then the only reason not to buy is if the cash savings of buying a 330k rig don’t add up when compared to the 200k mile rigs around your local area.

I personally wouldn’t hesitate if the history, maintenance and seller were on point.

At 330k miles I think you should expect to set aside money for replacing old parts. I think it could still be reliable for you but because of age and miles it's likely going to need some work.

Do you know when the timing belt was most recently replaced?

 

If mostly highway miles, snatch it up. You can get a good idea by looking at wear on the seat, brake pedal rubber, door paint around handle, door latch wear, seat belt, etc. Use good ol'common sense.

 

330k is a lot. If it drives well, shifts smoothly and doesn't leak, it might be worth it. 6,000 bucks doesn't buy much these days!

Do your own work and truck has been well maintained? You’re good.

Only issues with the 02 are weak planetary gears so keep it out of overdrive when towing and sometimes you’ll get a weld crack manifold exhaust leak. Annoying but not the end of the world. If you’re up for a challenge you can install aftermarket headers and let us know about your nightmare…I mean experience.

Just change the oil religiously especially if you do a lot of short trips (which is the worst since moisture doesn’t burn off and you can get sludge buildup). Changing the oil at least twice a year using synthetic will help to minimize it.

 

We all see the kind of posts in the 3rd gen section....I'd put $6K into fixing my truck any day over buying a new one.

 

Well yeah I would too since the Turd gens are fugly.

 

IMO, 2nd gens are the ugliest....followed by 3rd gens.

 

Ugly is the new thing with the in crowd //lol .. let's all enjoy getting well over 300k miles. The people with double that on original engine and trans is just awesome.

 

I'm halfway to mine breaking in. 140somethingandchangeK
