Floating head unit suggestions

I’m getting a new set of speakers and a head unit. I’d like to know what brand of units you guys prefer that performed without having alot of issues

Like most headunits it will run an active 3 way setup.

I am using stereo integrity for the speakers

Crutchfield has the sony mobile es component speakers on sale for $299. I personally have not listened to the sony but they get great reviews and for the price probably hard to beat.

I have been looking at crutchfield and reading up on speaker brands. Time have changed since the nineties for sure

2 What is your goal? Sound Quality, Loud, or both?
3 What is your knowledge of car stereo installation?

Sound quality is the most important thing here

Kenwood dnr1007xr. Awesome head unit. Actually, the best head unit I have ever had.
I also have stereo integrity throughout.

2 Bmmk5 12s behind the seat in my cm.

I’m actually getting ready to install stereo integrity tm8s in the doors and reconfigure the mid and tweet.

not a fan of alpine anymore. Their hu are ok. Glitchy software and output voltage doesn’t seem to be as advertised according to a friend in the industry also not affiliated with any brand. He is an installer and said kenwood is the best thing going right now with Sony right there as well.

 

Just my opinion
Go do some research on car audio forums before you buy any equipment

1. For good sound quality most do not use rear door speakers. They do an active 2 or 3 way system in the front with subs in thr rear.

My 3 way active with the stereo integrity setup can get stupid loud so there is no reason for me to have rear door speakers.

2 alot of people using raw speaker drivers and tweeters and not paying the cost of car audio component crossovers. They are using a dsp or the head unit for the crossover settings.
Check out madisound speaker store. You can get a set of SB acoustic 6.5 mid and tweeter setup for way less and better quality than most car audio packages

Side note. Just my opinion I see no reason to do a 6 channel amp in the tundra. Unless i am limited on space to mount amps. They are stupid expensive in most cases and most put out 150x6 watts.

Most car mids and tweeters will never need this amount of power.
Tweeters after your crossovers of 6k or higher is actually only getting around 1-5 watts of power.
There are formulas and videos explaining this.


I have used linear power, alpine, pioneer premier series, us acoustics, ct sounds in other builds in the past.

I like the sony xmgs4 series They are dead quite. No hiss or any type of noise issues. I have no regrets with them.
I have one 4 channel going to the tweeters in the sail panels and 3.5 dash.
The other 4 channel is bridged down to 2 channels on the 6.5 inch
On sale for $199 each at crutchfield.
So I am getting 6 channels of clean power for $400
Comes with a 3 year warranty. If one goes bad after that a 4 channel amp is way less replacement cost than a 6 channel amp

I see your point and I knew i was in trouble when I had to google that acronym.
I saw a tundra on YouTube and contacted the company locally here but they wanted far more money than I had fathomed.
One place just thought I wanted LOUD and they really didn’t understand my goal.
Some stuff is already in route ie the head unit but I will check the return policy

I have been looking at a supercharger and I will do better with that than I did with this. I appreciate the help and will learn more about the Amps and channels etc

You should be just fine with the alpine head unit. I like the way the alpine halo looks. I would have no problem using the alpine. People that are serious into car sound quality most of them do not even use a radio. They use a digital audio player direct digital output to their dsp if they want a pure signal.

I am no expert on the subject, but have done a few installs over the years.

I understand the cost,,to have my system in my tundra would have been over 10k at a local shop.

My son's mustang was a higher cost than my tundra.

Diy yourself you can get a good sounding system for $2,000 this is even replacing the head unit with a normal double din size screen

If you want the large screen alpine it will put you in the $3,000 range

I am around 5k in just equipment.

 

did you have the jbl stock.
I’m curious how you installed the si equipment in your truck. The m3 doesn’t fit in the dash and the m25 doesn’t fit in the sail. Well I guess they can with modification but I did not want to modify anything in this truck but wound up putting a

I put 2 sundown sdx 100.4 and a 1200.1 in my 19 crewmax. Have sun amp under drivers seat, 1 4 channel in the console and one under the passenger seat with my minidsp 8x12 dl.

 

Non jbl

To get the tweeters to fit ,get the jbl sail panels. They have enough space in them to fit he m25 tweeters. The jbl sail panels also put the tweeters a little more on axis facing. Not much but some.
They were around $70 for the pair at my local Toyota dealer parts department

I took a drill and drill bit set. Slowly cut out what I needed to get them to flush mount. Just go slow on the cutting process. I have the hole just large enough that it was a tight press fit to get them in.

On the m3 carbon I cut a hole in the grill itself and did a surface mount on top of the grill
I purchased a set of generic speaker grills that match close and covered them with that

I still need to sand the grill ring and paint it flat black
It gets a little reflection off the windshield.
The grill mesh does not reflect.
They look better than what is in the photo.

If I want to go back to factory I still have the factory sail panels
Also the dash grill covers are cheap if I want to go back to factory
I ran all new speaker wire to the speakers and did not cut any factory harness or wiring.
Even have the factory amp and speakers and headunit.
So to take back to factory is no big deal and would only cost $50 or so for factory dash grill covers.

 

The only thing I did not change was my JBL headunit yet. I did not want speakers in the dash. Out of all my systems over the years which have been almost every Toyota truck I owned this I decided not to change the headunit. My system sounds awesome with all sound deadening and both doors and tweeters done. 5 channel amp. Dual subs. It will be a total different system in the better way when the headunit is changed out.

 

I had the pleasure of riding in someone’s truck with the alpine mmats set up and

it’s like a mobile theater

surround sound and all just like being in the movie theater. I was very impressed

the hdmi allowed Apple TV , Netflix etc

 

Love my Kenwood 1057, I have a Roku into the HDMI, works great.

Good sound comes from
1st a good install
2nd good tuning
3rd having decent equipment is almost last
A set of $2,000 speakers will not sound good if steps 1and 2 are not done correct.

Here is a list of bare minimum needed to get good sound in a tundra.
1 head unit of your choice. From a sound quality stand point not a big difference in a $300 unit vs a $1500 unit. Just features and screen size make up the difference in cost.
I don’t care for features, I just want a clear signal to the dsp.

2. Must have some type of DSP. Most head-units will not have the adjustments needed to correct a car audio environment no matter how much you spend on speakers.
I have used the Dayton dsp 408 in the past, it will work just fine for less than $200.

To get great sound you will either need to understand tuning a car or take it to somewhere that will actually tune the car. Not by ear but by actual RTA tuning.


3. The equipment, as long as you are not using junk equipment you should be fine.
Tweeters you can get a good set for less than $200 for the pair
Midrange you can get a good set for less than $200 for the pair
Subwoofer a single 8 inch in the correct box can get plenty loud and hit low enough frequency to get great musical sound.



The factory tundra stereo is bad so it does not take much work or cost to make a big improvement.
