My comment was intended tongue in cheek, with a boatload of sarcasm. Maybe I put the ROFL emoji in the wrong position, it looked weird in between to me. Let me toss an /s on there.

In all seriousness, sarcasm aside, I don't work in a professional, regular volume shop environment so I can't comment on what you need for strangers vehicles rolling in. But you'll never find oil filters on any of the vehicles I've owned or worked on dating back 40-something years needing a wrench, unless it was in a really stupid position making it hard to hand-torque on/off and it's just easier to use one. Most of the wrenches I've seen people use are the hinged 'can crushers'. The strap ones work, I prefer the larger socket-cap style ones that grip the outer flats if I've got to use one but ... never needed one.

I can only imagine what the average shop sees. There have been cases with new cars where I've tried to muscle off a filter, but bigmouth vise grips took care of it. It's coming off anyway, don't mind if it gets crushed on the way out...

Definitely, I do prefer to avoid that mess, though. And I know it's going back in hand tight.

I'm inevitably going to lose function of my hands sooner than later, I should probably quit joking about it. Arthritis is already in my feet. All related to an ongoing medical condition that got diagnosed a few years back. Fun stuff.

You’re good, I haven’t had enough caffeine yet today. More often than not when doing an oil change, the filter is hot to the touch and last thing I wanna do is grab it. We have strap, chain, plier and 3 jaw(my favorite) wrenches at work. Less effort, quicker and more convenient since most vehicles filters aren’t as easily accessible as on our 2uz-fe. Even though most “skid plates” have an access hole or room on the side, it’s barely big enough to got the filter in/out let alone getting your hand in there to twist off. Like @KNABORES mentioned, as I get older I appreciate having the right tool for the job. Especially when I don’t wanna waste time on an oil change and get to a more enjoyable job.

I've got one of them oil filter socket things. The corolla really needs it. I put the oil filter on snug by hand. Spin it fast and free till it stops and a ¼ turn past stoppage and that sum bitch gets tighter than dicks hat band when you're wrapped up with your first.

 

I've exhausted every redneck method of removal I'm aware of on my oil filter before. Previous dude must've been Hercules haha. Or he forgot to lube the gasket. My band wrench couldn't quite get in position to twist, ended up crushing the filter a bit. So I got a rag and placed it over the filter and hit it with the band wrench again to more crushing. That's when the screwdriver of doom came out hahaha

 

On the heat thing, I glove up. Knowing what's waiting for me health-wise, and how hard I was on my hands in my youth as you'll find from scars or missing bits here or there, I've got a couple of stout leather-padded wrenching gloves I use. I'm that stubborn asshole who prefers driving around before oil changes to get everything hot and liquefied. But don't get me wrong, I do 90%+ less OC in a year than a shop does in 30 minutes so it works. I speculate it would probably suck wearing gloves in a shop with any volume, taking them on, then off, then on, then off etc.

 

That's what they make disposable gloves for. But they aren't much help for heat haha

Oh, I keep high-mil disposable gloves also. I wish I hadn't been such a dumbass when I was younger. Shitty part is, folks I shake hands with think I don't do any type of labor ever, because they're not calloused anymore. Wise enough to glove up now after not caring in my younger days. Can't win either way.

But if you look close enough, you'll see the scars. Hell, I still have caliper dust embedded in my pinky from when I cut my hand open on my 1st brake job at age 12 or 13. It's all there, I just wish someone had pushed me to glove up more religiously while dumping all that knowledge in my head....

 

I’ve always used one of these cheap adapters with a 3/8” socket wrench to get my oil filter off. Only issue is getting the filter out of it when it’s still hot. Need to hammer the sides down a bit to pop it off.

That's what I was talking about w/something to engage the flats. For vehicles that use cartridges, like my wife's previous Highlander and my old Vr6 GTI, they make similar. I honestly prefer the cartridge-style filters. It's bad enough I'm hucking a dino-soaked tampon in the landfill, wrap it in steel and I really feel like a douche tossing it. But after you've seen a few hundred littered around your favorite fishing hole, on your favorite hikes, that crap really gets in your craw...

 

Once you’ve gotten the filter loose, hand tighten it back on and switch the direction back and forth on the ratchet. It should break loose and let go. A little vertical movement up and down also helps.

 

It’s a little hot to be touching it truthfully as I like to drain it while it’s hot to get as much old oil out as possible. The additional vise grip shifty showed would help though.

You ain’t using it right then. I’ve tried all options and that’s my go to. Hundreds of oil changes and hasn’t failed to remove a filter yet.

 

My Dad, God rest his soul, could build you a hell of a house but removing an oil filter simply required him to drive a screw driver thru it and screw if off. Then he'd collect the old oil and use it in yard tools

Needlessly to say, what little vehicle skills I have did not come from Dad but I did pick up his building skills.

 

@shifty` - I spin the old style by hand and them 1/4 turn with a socket cap wrench. On my G2.5 just snug it up because the o-ring is not really holding it

 

Not cool man. Didn't know it was the bad bud. It's amazing there is so little that can be done for arthritis in general, as medically advanced as we are anyways.

 

Hear me out on this, might be embarrassing myself. Growing up I was taught the whole put some oil on the gasket before you put the new filter on. Recently I was watching someone and they popped the entire gasket off the filter and did both sides. I've been doing it this way since then and have noticed a difference.

 

Yup, autoimmune disorders are a beast, whether it's RA, or what I've got. The disorder I'm scrapping with is known about for almost a century yet nobody knows much about what causes it. They know how to identify it, then treat the symptoms. For me, arthritis is inevitable and is already kicking in at my extremities. I've gotta drink more water than other people to deal with other symptoms. Oh, and best part, my chances of lymphoma are 3x-4x higher than others which is the case with a few other autoimmune issues.

Fun stuff. But you get dealt the hand you get dealt and learn to live with it. You'll rarely hear me bitch about it. Take a couple of Aleve a day when it's bad and move along...

 

how awesome would a 1G Sequoia be if the rear roof & hatch glass could slide forward until the hatch glass seated into the backs of the 2nd row seats.
It's be a truck with cap that could melt into the cab.

Only way to change the filter on the Pius. filter is up in a hole, can't even get 1 finger between filter & hole - have to use one of these filter sockets.
