After 6 years of taking my tundra through overgrown trails it didn’t fit on, I’m looking to give her some attention and try to remove some pin striping. I have a Griots 6” random orbital and some pads it came with. I’m kind of embarrassed to say I’ve never gone above an occasional foam wash with this truck; it’s always been function over form. First off, are these pin stripes something I can tackle or should I just bring it to a detailer next to my shop? Lastly, what would you gurus recommend pad and compound wise if I were to diy it?

Just a small section but the sides are covered:

Can’t speak to specifics, as I’m an amateur when it comes to this stuff. But I have found that a clay bar will remove more than I ever expected, beyond that a simple glazing compound will do wonders too with an orbital.

*Patiently awaiting someone with more experience to chime in…

I miss the shine of the paint but just curious to see if death by pinstripes can be resurrected.

I think that paint looks salvageable. I did clean up quite a few pinstripes on mine with a DA polisher and some decent compound. It’s a lot of work though. But @BiggHertz puts my buff jobs to shame, maybe he can chime in.

From the looks of that I’m pretty sure you can get almost all of it with the Griots DA.
I’d first use some Iron X and a clay bar / mitt to decon the paint, then go to town with the DA. Personally, I’d use Uro-fiber pads with a medium grade compound, then follow up with finishing pads and polish. The Griots Boss system of products will handle just about anything.

If that doesn’t get it all you can always go back with something stronger, but I’d start with the correcting cream and perfecting cream first. @briarpatch may have other recommendations as well, but in my experience the Griots system is going to be enough for just about anything.

I like the sound of that! I’ll grab some some compounds and pads and give her a shot. Appreciate the info!

How many of these can you feel with your finger nail? And has the truck ever been paint corrected?

Very few can be felt with a finger nail. No paint correction in the 6 years I’ve owned it. Doubt the po did paint correction.

Sounds like you’ll have some material to work. What are your realistic expectations of the final product?

As long as it doesn’t look like my ex’s keyed my truck hundreds of times, I’ll be happy. I know I won’t be able to get rid of everything but any improvement will be worth the effort.

In that case, i think investing some time into chemical decontamination “fallout remover” followed by mechanical decontamination “clay mitt/bar”, good wash, a single step correction (my preference is sonax perfect finish on a rupes yellow pad), panel prep “ipa wipe”, assess what you need from there, could use a glaze to help fill in some of the deeper imperfections in the clear and top it with a polymer paint sealant.

This will get you where you need to be without removing too much material.

I agree with the others. Those scratches should buff out. Also, if you don't have a ton of experience with clay bars, they make clay mitts now that can be easy to use. Less change of dropping them on the ground.
