When I bought my Tundra the windshield had a crack and were back ordered so the dealer gave me $2000 ( Canadian ) for a windshield when they came in.

To cover the cost of the replacement because they were suppose to have it replaced before my arrival for pick up. Just an FYI but a dealer of any form cannot sell a vehicle with a broken windshield in Canada.

They lost money on you so they had to make it up on the next sale.

So nobody cares whether or not their insurance actually covers Oem windshield or generic only?

I asked earlier but got no replies... I think this is very important topic

I think you have to pay the difference if you want OEM. Insurances are always going to go the cheap route. I'm more concerned that my Tundra is going to sit in the driveway because the windshield is on "backorder".

I've used numerous aftermarket parts when I did body work years ago. Never really had too many issues with fitment, only on older vehicle where the molds they use to make the parts were getting worn. Honesty as long as it doesn't leak and there are no issues after, I'm ok with it.

I'm ok with most aftermarket products but this was a safety item which I need to trust with my life due to the damage it caused. It happened so fast that I thought the rock entered the vehicle. Turns out it was the elasticity of the laminated glass along with the glass shrapnel.

Damn, how big was the rock? I had a piece of gravel hit mine after 1000 miles of having the truck. Had to get it repaired but the guy that did it said there was a small chuck taken out that he couldn't fill. It never got any bigger...till I hit that turkey.

My windshield replacement is the OEM one. Just tell your insurance adjuster that the windshield is technically part of the crash structure. When I mentioned that, they had no issue paying for an OEM replacement.

Couldn't complain. It was a rock in the road that a car kicked up. I have windshield coverage at no cost through Toyota but they are on backorder.

Can anyone explain this?? Is it the angle of the windshield ?
I have had my 2022 Tundra a little over a year and going to be replacing the windshield which will be #4including the original. I only know of 2 rocks (very small) hitting the windshield.
I have never had to replace a windshield until this Tundra. I have nationwide insurance however at what point do they cut me off? Or start raising my rates?
Anyone else having this many issues?
    Thanks in advance.

My 2023 definitely has a different angle than my 2013. The 2013 has a smaller angle which I think deflects the rock versus the 2023. I believe the 2023 absorbs the impact rather than deflecting. In my case, the rock was too large anyway.

Mine had a tiny rock hit dead bottom center and immediately cracked about 6 inches. thankfully it stopped spreading for now.

Serious question, why OEM over aftermarket?

Me personally don't mind aftermarket parts but this is a safety windshield and would prefer OEM. I've seen what it can do.

Can't speak for the 3rd gen tundras, but there were some issued with non OEM glass on previous TSS equipped vehicles having issues because of optical faults in the glass. The camera behind the rearview mirror doesn't like distorted pictures, and non OEM glass may not be of a sufficient clarity to keep it happy.

    What others said above

Plus, Toyota Oem parts are generally better quality and more expensive.

Aftermarket has to compete with other aftermarket manufacturers, and cut costs to make more profits, so don't expect a good quality.

*Update* In case you haven't kept up. It's been 6 weeks since a rock went through my windshield and every week there was no ETA on the repairs.
Went to toyota to throw a fit about when my windshield will be repaired. Of course I spoke with a sales Director who was not so customer service friendly. He told me that I can get the aftermarket and move on with life or I can wait for the OEM. Also, there is parts shortage. I said how is there a parts shortage when you have a lot full of trucks and cars? He also told me that I could just trade it in too. Why would I trade it in if it depreciates the value? He says, That's how you trade. Keeping my composure, I walked out furious. On the drive home, I cooled myself off and planned my next steps. Trying to contact corporate is impossible. So I did the next big thing. I 1 starred a google review with the whole conversation and called out the sales director with his name and title. I also showed pics so people could understand that I wasn't *itching about a little crack. 10 minutes later the Customer Relations Director called and long story short, I have an appointment to have my winshield replaced on Thursday. Coincidence how an OEM windshield arrived with my name on it during that conversation.

Hi! I run an auto glass shop in SW MT with my dad and thought I could shed a little light on a bunch of these topics for you guys! Take the advice with a grain of salt since I'm the glass shop! Toyota is having production issues overall, I cannot find OEM or aftermarket windshields for Tundras, Camrys, Highlanders, 4 Runners & Rav4s - they are saying indefinite backorder which means could be a week or a year. As far as aftermarket vs OEM goes, the are literally made in the same exact factories, one just says Toyota and the other does not so they can charge you more. They are made in factories everywhere from Columbia, Mexico, Canada, China and on a rare occasion USA, OEM and aftermarket alike. Generally speaking, glass shops do not put OEM windshields in because of the cost, especially when dealing with insurance companies. Every insurance co sets their own discounts/labor rates etc. Our cost on an OEM windshield is 20% discount on list price, yet some insurance companies take a 45% discount, so it would make zero sense for the shop to take the job and lose money! Also, there are 27 different options for a 22 Tundra windshield, not just 1 windshield. As far as recalibration goes, no, you do not have to have it recalibrated, however it's a "triple check" to make sure the safety systems are working properly. A liability issue could arise if you were to get in a wreck and chose not to have it recalibrated, we require customers to sign a waiver if they chose not to have it done. Saw some posts about being safe or unsafe to drive so I'll address that as well! Obviously the gentleman with the giant hole in the window - yeah that's not safe!! Haha! A crack or chip in your windshield is fine to drive with - it will not "leak" as someone though because windshields are all laminated which generally means the crack/chip is on the outside layer of glass, not both. Obviously if you have an actual "hole" in your windshield then yes, worry about a leak. But they are safe to drive unless you can't physically see. As far as cost goes, these new windshields are EXPENSIVE! But you can't also expect a $200 windshield in a $60k pickup. They are putting so much technology in the windshields now it's absolutely crazy. Any questions feel free to ask, or yell at me because I'm the glass shop that can't get you a windshield, haha! I hope this helps some of you! Peace out, thanks for reading!

So here is an update after my windshield was replaced on 8/3/23. 5 days later another rock hit the windshield and cracked it. This one was nowhere near as bad as the last one. I emailed the service manager to let him know. When he called me, he gave me the "forever no ETA routine" but that he was going to look into it. About an hour later he calls back saying that some windshields came in and that one was from a customer who has been waiting for a while. They were going to give me that person's windshield. Though I like being treated like a king from that 1-star review, I still feel bad for the guy who has been waiting for a windshield. It could have been me.
