I used to drink tequila heavily and I think it made me immune to vomiting (I guess I used it so much I broke my vomiter). It'd be more like this:

It's definitely a tragic situation, and I really do feel bad for the families. Especially for that 19 year old kid.

That said, it's pretty clear who here has a dark sense of humor. That comes from being actually twisted, or having seen some shit. I like to think we don't have very many truly twisted folks here.

I've been to a Faces of Death midnight showing in a theater before then got something to eat...owned a few of the DVDs too

 

When we watch the walking dead, I'm always asking how can they not smell the dead?

 

It's absolutely horrific and insanely stupid. I definitely don't find any humor in their deaths or how they died.

 

I used to rent them.

After I saw Alive at the theater in 1993 I had a craving for chicken tenders.

 

Because they all smell like ass from not showering (at least in the first few seasons).

 

Definitely have seen some how the fuck did this happen calls throughout my career.

 

The underwater part never bothered me. Probably because I built and later designed them. I only rode sea trials and ther was always way too many people on board. No place to get comfortable and long shifts.

I never got a chance to ride a submersible, so I can't comment on that.

I once worked for a superintendent that was on a sub that had a depth excursion. He never set foot on a sub that wasn't tied to a pier or in drydock again.

 

Not really that secret. NATO put down lots of passive sonar listening posts all over the North Atlantic back in the Cold War to track Soviet submarine movements.

That’s how they knew where to find the USS Thresher or USS Scorpion back in the day. Also how we knew about more recent submarine accidents around the world. Sound travels a long way under water and those passive sonar arrays on the seabed will hear them, make a recording, and report a bearing to the contact. Then its just a matter of triangulation.

You would think that the fact we now know their fate, the jokes would stop.

 

Unfortunately they are only getting started.

 

It’s how some people deal with tragedy. A way of compartmentalizing. Some have never experienced true tragedy or devastation first hand. They don’t have a healthy respect for it.

 

Well you see this would be a tragedy if it were unexpected, or children were involved, or happened to people doing something routine and generally very safe.

In this instance we have a bunch of consenting adults doing something quite risky even in well maintained and engineered equipment operated by consummate professionals. Except they weren’t using well engineered or maintained equipment, and their sub pilot was a loud mouth braggart of clearly sub par competence.

They broke the rule of stupids:

Don’t go to stupid places, at stupid times, with or around stupid people.

I feel terrible for the families left behind, but it sounds like none of them are going to be left destitute. As for the victims, they took their chances and rolled snake eyes this time.

I’m lucky to be alive today because in a previous career I served Uncle Sugar in a not very nice place where the population tried to kill me and my friends. I’ve known plenty of young men who didn’t make it back in one piece or alive, and I’ll never forget them. However, we all volunteered to do something potentially dangerous and followed orders to go do those things when the time came. That will tend to make a guy have a dark sense of humor and a hard heart when it comes to grown ass men taking risks and coming up a loser. Shit happens, sometimes the odds catch up with you.

 

I'll stop joking as soon as these wealthy families start writing checks from the estate to cover the cost of search & rescue. As that'll never happen, I somewhat callously look forward to a few more days of funny memes until the short attention span of the internet paves right over it and moves on.

 

Agreed. Wonder what the total cost per hour to operate all the Coast Guard cutters from US and Canada and the other vessels was?

 

Jesus, you guys are pretty cold hearted. I don't care how much money anyone has made, there's a bunch of families devastated tonight despite the inherent risks they took. Why not just think of them for once, it seems like the right thing to do.

 

My deepest condolences to them that their recently departed loved ones made poor decisions. May their deaths not be in vain, and serve as a guide for others to learn from so that such recklessness isn’t repeated.
