Another account of what happens when faulty decompression occurs at that depth.

It was over on Sunday when they lost contact abruptly. They could not have been entangled in the wreckage of Titanic as they were only at 8000 meters. They imploded when they lost contact. Supposedly the submersible developed micro fractures each time it dove. The cumulative number of micro fractures finally caused the hull to give way and implode.Additionally I hear that the vehicle was to have been 7 inches thick and Stockton said 5 inches would do. Death was instantaneous. They never new what hit them. Stockton Rush refused to have the vessel scanned for faults for fear he would be shut down. The hubris of Stockton Rush cost everyone their life.

From what I've been reading about how he handled speculation/scrutiny into his sub, I'm not surprised. TBH, 5 successful trips to the Titanic is a good record and would fool most into thinking he knew what he was doing.

Me and the wife who hasn't read up on the issues with this thing just argued on the way home on this. She said it had already made several successful trips and I told her the defects probably didn't cause a failure immediately, it held together for awhile. The thing being under-built may not become evident the first time it dives.

There is stuff in my CNN link about the thickness and integrity of that hull. Once something like that comes together the tendency is probably to want to get it into service making you a return on your investment and not pour more money in to re doing things you'd banked on being finished. If you're only one of a few contrarian voices going "we're not ready" in a crowd full of people who drank the kool aid under management ready to get revenue coming in you're losing That argument.

At the depth of the titanic, the weight of the entire ocean on top of you and all around you exerts 6000 psi. So picture a sphere and there's 3 tons of pressure pushing inward on every square inch of the the outer surface. 3 tons on EACH square inch.
    Trying to crush it.
Any compromise to the structure and it will collapse/implode in roughly 1/100th of a second.
Kinda like this, but faster and more completely.

Basically the Navy started listening almost as soon as the sub lost communications. The system detected what might have been the sound of an implosion near where the debris site was discovered.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones! What a shame and what a waste!

I was reading about the sub and to me it sounds like each time it went down the structure would deteriorate or lose original strength. It amazes me what some people do knowing that it isn’t the safest place to be and they put themselves into such places without a number of back up after backup after backup systems to keep them safe? RIP

One of my many roomies in my other life was a graveyard shift Houston LEO who worked traffic fatalities. He had some interesting pics he'd share with me. Mostly motorcycle incidents.
