Engine Oil for 1st Gen V-8

What, if any, is the advantage of regular vs synthetic blend vs full synthetic oil in my
'05 V-8 Tundra. I change every 5000 miles. Also is there a significant advantage of one brand vs another?

 

Synthetic makes a significant difference in moisture caused sludge accumulation between oil changes when you regularly take short trips from home.

 

The simple answer is...not really. The differences between regular or synthetic and one brand to another is trivial.

The second simplest answer is....why not use synthetic? Its cheap, and widely available. More so than dino oil these days which is getting harder to find. There is no reason not to use. At worst, it's no worse, and at best, slightly better protection and gas mileage.

Costco store brand is pretty popular and comes in handy 5 quart box.

Hubs has been using Mobil1 full syn and has over 300k trouble free miles, pulled his valve covers for recent maintenance and everything was showroom new so I go by that data.

 

Less important than the oil you use is the schedule you choose, especially true for short-trip drivers. Short-trip driving is brutal on your engine. Talking to you folks who drive 5-10 miles or less, park for a while, then rinse/repeat. Even worse if that's all stop-and-go miles. in that case, you need to be changing your oil based on months vs. miles, 12mos/3k miles max and I'd recommend full syn. You'll notice more varnish and potential sludge from moisture that never has time to burn off, and it'll be worse with dino oil than full syn.

Sure, there are some corner cases on the mileage thing. Maybe you only drive the truck every weekend on a 50-250 mile round trip or something, running the boat to your favorite hole to launch and back home again, hauling gear and family to the cabin for the weekend, whatever it may be. I can see using a 5k mile schedule then. Or if you're purely highway mileage, using as a commuter 90% of your mileage and using full syn, 10k miles.

Folks need to get it out of their head that mileage is key. The last owner of my truck made a short jaunt daily, had oil changed based on mileage at a local Jiffy lube. What I found under the valve covers when doing the gaskets was gnarly.

 

I’ve used Mobil one exclusively for 20 years. Most of my yotas run the 10k intervals, my truck doesn’t see that kinda mileage so I change it once a year. I change our tlx type s at 5k, it gets driven hard at times.

Synthetic is better.

One brand vs another brand is debatable, usually with no conclusion!

I'm an Amsoil fan personally. It's a $50k truck, why go cheap on oil?

1st gens weren’t $50k brand new, barely $35.

 

Mobil1 for me. In the engine, t-case and diffs.

A little lower. I paid $27.5k (invoice) on an SR5 with decent options.

I’m looking at close to $60k for a new SR5 that’s similar

I paid $10k when it had 31k miles. Best $10k I ever spent.
