I'm the 2nd owner of a 2012 Tundra CM Platnium 4x4 that I purchased from the original dealer in 2013 with only 5800 miles on it, love the truck and like new minus the MSRP.

Last week at 29,000 miles on it I decided on having a LRO 3/1 installed after doing as much research as I could plus purchased a set of Cooper LTZ Zeons 275/65/20 on factory Platinum wheels. I'm very pleased with the overall look and drive of the truck now but my steering rack blew out the same day!

I had it towed to the dealer and they had the Fidelity warenty adjuster come out and turn down the claim based on mods, I was pi$$ed but not surprised! After doing more research and understanding this has been a known issue with some Tundra's modified and stock I addressed with the service manager. After he talked with his regional rep they agreed to cover the cost of a new rack as "good faith" but I'm still stuck with $1500 in labor.

My question is who here has been through this before and what were the final results you had with the replacement rack? I would hope that now in 2015 whatever changes have been made to these racks regardless if Toyota is publicly admitting to any previous issues or not. I will hopefully have it back next week and will see how it goes. Thanks for any feedback/advice!

Can't help with the rack question as I'm new to Tundras. But I can say that is one fine looking truck! And welcome to the forum.

$1500 of LABOR for a steering rack replacement (15hrs @ $100/hr?)? Sounds like they're charging for the rack and just calling it labor.:bananadead:

Michael, thank you and congrats on your Tundra.

Eric, I agree but after checking out labor "estimates" from two other places (not dealers) it's the same stupid number of hours that the "computers" are giving them too. With that said we all know it's complete bull$hit and there are ways to do it in half the time but the unfortunate fact is this is the lesser of all evils from a cost perspective. If I had the time and a good lift I would tell them thank you for the free replacement part and I will do it myself!

I have heard of steering racks blowing for those with 6" plus of lift...can they prove this was related to the lift? If so, which part of it caused the damage?

This. Have Toyota prove without a reasonable doubt the aftermarket parts caused the rack to go. You can bring up to them the fact that this isn't a seldom occurrence but a rather well known issue with Tundras.
