Because the workers at that location were unionizing. REI doesn't want that to happen so they are closing the store.

I believe that it may have had more to do with the vandalism, homelessness and theft in the area

 

They would love for that narrative to be the only one talked about.

 

I don’t know where you live but if you have recently been in Portland (the last several years), you might consider it a very convincing narrative. I was unaware of their anti-union stance.

 

My understanding is that sbux did the same thing to the a few stores in the Seattle area to 'union bust' as well....

 

I get it. I live east of Portland. Worked in NE until February of this year. My office window got hit while I was sitting at my desk. The glass blew out all over my face and computer. Scared the shit out of me. I can send you videos of people drugged out tripping right out of my window. Homeless camps around the building. Stolen abandon cars in the parking lot that you can’t get towed for weeks. I CC always now. There were bullet holes in the hallway that hadn’t got filled when I left. I’ve lived it. Portland has always had a fucked up history. This is another fucked up chapter in its story.
REI might not close the store the lease runs out in 2024 and they still could renegotiate a new lease. They are having some issues with the landlords and the new lease agreement. I’m sure there will be many factors for whether they stay or go. I’m guessing the CEO still wants to make 22 million a year or more so he’ll make sure it makes the most since for that money to keep going in that direction. To say it’s because of homelessness, theft and vandalism is not telling the whole story. I’m sure REI would like that to be the only narrative. Poor REI they got run out of the town. Not that they might be against unionizing and want the landlords to lower the price on the new lease. Just saying they are leaving gives them a lot of nagotiation power on both of those fronts.

 

REI and Sbux are both based out of WA

Coincidentally (or not) the investment firms Vanguard and Blackrock are both companys' their largest shareholders. Both investment firms are well known for manipulation of CEOs and BODs within these companies due to their ability to leverage the companies they are invested in. My guess is that there are several tactics being deployed to increase margins and ultimately profits for the shareholders by keeping costs down in numerous areas of operation including employees costs/benefits, leases, etc....

They haven’t left yet. But next year they are closing the store in town.
Clackamas and Tigard and Beaverton stores will remain

 

My older brother who still lives in Orygun read that the Portland store closure was due to the rising crime problem.

 

That was the official email they sent, and the story they told the paper.
Not the story you get when you talk to some of the folks working in the store.

 

Portland is not the same anymore. Used to be a pretty kuul place to go. We used to drive up to Portland back in the 70's to catch a concert or a Blazer game. Lots of great micro breweries in Portland even back then. I know why Portland has gone downhill but don't want to get the ban hammer. Ha!
