I was going to suggest dramamine too. That is what we gave our dogs on road trips so they wouldn't get sick, but also made them super drowsy.

We give our dog CBD edibles for thing like the 4th of July and when he gets his nails trimmed. He doesn’t act stoned but definitely is more relaxed.

There's been some newer things come out recently to calm nerves that I've personally found to be ineffective and highly expensive (like you had to buy 3-4 tubes of the shit to get through a weekend for a larger dog @a couple of hundred dollars)....

We've used diazepam or trazadone a few times w/ok success, but side affects (stomach issues, etc. after for a couple of days sucks)

I've had really good luck w/Gabapentin; it's cheap and generally speaking, it's very safe, w/little side affects. It was designed to be an anti-seizure drug, but is kinda becoming main stream for pain management (usually before moving to narcotic strength pain killers)...

It has also been found to have a sedating affect, but my guess it because it deals w/seizures it's running a different path to its process of sedation. They would probably give you 300mg capsules, and I'd start w/2 (600mg 1.5-2.0 prior to the event)...

*** It's very important to get the meds on board (in the dog) prior to the stressful event starting if possible to maximize effectiveness. ***

You should see the dog sleepy and highly relaxed, but not completely out of it; He'll probably just lay down and chill somewhere comfortable...

Depending on the duration of the event, a single dose may be sufficient; if it carries on for a while you can add another capsule in a couple of hours if you need to. Always follow vet recommendations, but I've found that the recommendation of 1 hour prior usually isn't long enough for the dose to set in and sometimes, depending on the vet, they may be conservative on dosing...

Best bet is once you get the pills, take a quiet evening w/nothing else going on and give him one. Time how long it takes for the dosing to really take affect. If you don't see an adequate sedation level. Wait for a few days and start another trial w/2 capsules (600mg) and test for timing on the sedation of that dose. This way, on the day(s)/weekend of the event you'll know when to start dosing.

Is that freakin' kiwi??? What else do you have on there?? The wife and I were making pizzas 2 nights ago, and I looked over and saw a few kiwis in the fruit bowl... I was joking w/her about throwing one on a pizza, but we decided not to that night. How was it???

Oh, that's not my pizza. It is an actual pizza that was sold as a limited time special though. I think the shop WAS in the Netherlands. It has kind of gotten more traction though. The story behind that kiwi pizza is pretty sad though.

Diazepam or trazadone doesn't do shit for our Boxer. He went to the vet today for his annual checkup, and they gave him some sort of tranquilizers, and he looks stoned as shit, but they still couldn't trim his nails.

That's a hard no. He's a total spaz about his feet. What I need to do is walk him more, but our other dog goes mental on walks and th Boxer feeds off her, so walks are very few and far between.

The vet gave use Gabapentin 600mg and Trazodone 100mg and said to give both at the same time 2hrs before and it might work.

You'd be surprised about the whole lift thing; most will still pull their leg back a little once they are lifted as you are manipulating feet, but you just block the joint (knee or elbow from moving) and you can get it done fairly easy.

Dogs don't have good depth perception, so when they are elevated off all 4 they will generally dangle their legs straight down and not fight so hard; especially when the chest and rest of the body is supported by the harness.

Even dogs that flip around and thrash about as you lift them by hand, are generally pretty passive in the lift... FWIW

Safety note: If you are dealing w/a dog that will bite or get highly defensive, definitely muzzle w/a good agitation style muzzle to prevent getting hurt, since your face and neck are accessible
