    Hey all,
I am currently looking for more storage for my hunting trips, my current idea is to mount a rack on bed rails.
Recently found out about custom DIY racks and they seem pretty sturdy imo, anyone on here have experience making some? I especially like this video here, the fasteners he is using seem very strong. Any feedback is appreciated

A custom giant hitch mount cargo basket is what I have and would suggest. I can and do haul my garden tractor on my big custom basket. It's like having a second truck without the expense or trailer hassles such as storage, lights, wheel bearings, dry rotted tires, etc. I use magnetic light kit if traveling any significant distance. Otherwise, just rely on my headache rack mounted lights if the truck lights are sort of blocked. Good luck!

Thank you for the feedback, but I am looking specifically for feedback for DIY racks, hitch mount storage is not an option for me.

Well okay! Sort of have something along those lines too. If you want to go roof mount, look at the system used for the spider or spyder (not exactly sure) roof racks. It's a no drill system. Pretty sure you could purchase mounting blocks only. My custom bed rails and headache rack were mounted using the old school expandable rubber stake pocket anchors with stainless steel bolts and nuts, been working great for years. Again, good luck!

Im looking to bed mount a "roof type rack" if that makes any sense...I looked into the Spider racks, to expensive for me for now, I am looking for a budget solution, hence the DIY, also I am in Canada, everything is more expensive up here! To import the Spider rack would cost me surplus for international shipping etc...

Id suggest extending your headache rack rails all the way back and having a removable rear cross bar to keep heavy loads off the tailgate. That is what I did. Have two 5' bedside boxes going on over my rails when I can find the time to get em mounted up. Another one to consider that I'm doing is a custom bed drawer system to have secure storage and a bed floor.

This is what I'm doing on the sides for easy access.Screenshot_20230613-114948.png

Trail Edition boxes, Gator tonneau, Westin headache rack and convertible rear and front hitch mount racks right here, right now. Can haul 24' lumber or 20' steel overhead all day long without a trailer and have the tonneau cover on simultaneously. Versatility rocks! Especially when you work a truck like a truck.
