I hadn't seen that article. That is what a good company should do. So I takeaway that they had a problem and addressed it as a positive.
I had a M3 that BMW had rod bearing issues with. The proactively called and replaced the bearings at the distributor with jigs to hold the motor that BMW had built. I was racing mine so it shouldn't have been covered under warranty but they replaced the bearings as a preventative. I think they were pretty public about the problem and like the Tundra turbo, they shut the issue down pretty quick.

Here is how I approached it a year and a half ago... I wanted a new tundra, had 07, 14,16 and 19's and was a little over the blandness of them.

Sold my 19 tundra in November of 2021 for more than I paid for it, had been paying for 2.4 years on the loan
Stripped off all the parts- sold for a profit (pandemic supply chain issues still rampant)
Spent 6 months without a truck (drove my dads tundra for a good chunk of it, wifes 4runner the rest)- saved the cash I would be spending on my payment and added that to my fun money stash for the new truck
Found a 1794 off-road for sale and bought it- put a large down payment with $$ from old truck sale + parts sale

Got a better interest rate, and only added 2.4 years to my payment plan (company pays part of our vehicle payments each month). In a far superior truck that's modern, refined and more luxurious than my prior platinum's. I love my new tundra, do they have issues- yes! But so did all my other trucks.

Would I do it again? Honestly no, but that's due to outside factors (baby #2 coming any day now and we need a new house and a safer/ newer car for wifey- would have bought a used tundra cash with the funds from selling my old one + parts), bought her a new ride close to cash with minimal payment.

It's a WANT not a NEED. Get what you WANT. No need to seek validation from a bunch of Luddite trolls. It will be your truck, it's your money not theirs!

FTR I love my 2023 1794 edition! TRD OR hybrid. I came from a 2017 Tacoma, which was all I probably NEED with regard to a truck, but I chose something I WANT.

Anyone else can GTFO, it's my money and not theirs.

As much as I want to agree with you....your bitching while ordering a Starbucks on an APP. Watching porn on your tablet. Checking your flights on a phone. Glass half full.....glass half empty.

My Kid is rocking a 2004 Lexus slammed to the ground with .....wait for it.....Factory glass. Its not really that bad unless you are trying to make it that bad

I needed a truck in late 2020. So, I bought a truck and paid it off. It meets all of my needs. Therefore, I am not in the market.
This is the Toyota way. Long generations are a feature, not a bug. And honestly, I think it's a lot better than the "let's redesign something every few years that looks cool and has a lot of curb appeal despite the fact that it has glaring issues that need to be ironed out." Look at Ford's recent insane warranty costs compared to everyone else.

    Tundra gen 2: 2007-2021
    Sequoia gen 2: 2008-2022
    4Runner gen 5: 2010-2023
    200 series: 2008-2021
    The list goes on...

This is why Toyota spends less in warranty work than everyone else:
    • Share parts across platforms
    • Release a new gen that is fairly solid out of the gate
    • Mop up issues quickly
    • Give a mid-gen refresh and remove some features (ex: Tundra overhead console, interior storage, driver's side grab handle, engine options, factory thermostatically controlled transmission cooler, etc) to save production costs as demand settles
    • Play with unique colors/trims later in the generation to stimulate demand (ex: TRD Pro Tundra, 4Runner, Sequoia, and Tacoma; Heritage Edition Land Cruiser)

If I needed a truck right now, I'm not sure what I'd do. The issues with the 3rd gen seem pretty small in comparison to overall sales numbers, but Toyota being so tight-lipped about it makes me nervous. I am very risk-averse with the vehicle I choose to rely on, especially when I put lots of miles on it and take it to extremely remote locations.

Lol well we all know that everyone is pretty fired up. I think my Gen 3 is the coolest truck I ever owned. I also know there are some things I think could have been better. If my engine blows I am thankful I have 80000 miles left on warranty. I know the odds of that happening are quite small. I think the other Gen Tundra’s are cool also. This isn’t new though, the Chevy guys do it to each other also.

I actually think every pickup truck ever is cool in one way or another. So carry on soldiers, but I probably will start to skip these sorts of threads and try to stay in the ones that are constructive. If life is too short to not drive what you want, then it’s definitely too short to read this kind of stuff.

Who doesn't want to be the cool kid on the block with a new truck?

I sold my Tacoma peak used car market, I turned a profit on it despite selling the truck at a family discount. Bought a 2.5 gen tundra because I wanted one. My wife happened to be preggo around that time so its a win win for everyone.

    LOL

Maybe If I lived in NYC I would rock that, otherwise I would pass, so yeah, I would prefer to have a Ford Maverick (my old man had a 1970 one of those way back when also lol)

For what it's worth, I had a 2022 SR5 TRD Off Road Premium, Crew Max with the 5.5ft bed. I traded it in a few months ago for a 2016 SR5 TSS Crew Max.

I loved my 2022 Tundra - it was my first truck, and the truck that I spent months researching, saving, and planning for. The new engine and transmission go together extremely well, and passing trucks or slow vehicles on one lane roads was a breeze. I loved the looks, the technology, the safety features, and the overall exterior and interior design. However, I had an issue with my infotainment system, found that shifting from Park to Drive/Reverse was clunky, and had a rattle I could not get rid of on the interior. After the new car smell wore off a few months in I realized that it was ultimately just a vehicle that depreciated 15% in the blink of an eye, and I was interested in spending a portion of my monthly payment on other things. I would personally consider waiting until the 2024 or 2025 model year comes out and all the quirks are worked out - it's a bummer to find issues in a $55k - $70k new truck, and wasting time at the dealership sucks just as much.

I got lucky and was able to negotiate a trade in value at MSRP and pulled the trigger on a 2016 SR5 TSS Crew Max with a King Shock setup. It's a little slower and less peppy, but I really enjoy the V8 engine, the interior feels larger, and the seats and center console are MUCH more comfortable than the 2022. Only downside is the gas mileage - never thought I would miss the days of getting 16-19 mpg in the 2022 tundra lol.

That's just my $.02. I dream of owning a 2.5 gen or 3rd gen 1794 in the future still, so either way you end up going, you'll have yourself a wonderful truck.

Fair. I guess I was more referring to my experience of checking the KBB value 9 months in and seeing the value drop quickly over time, and having that influence my decision to look at a 2.5 gen.

I respect your decision as well, if I hadn't found the 2016 Tundra I bought, I wouldn't have traded in my '22 for a used Tundra at a similar price point.

Had 18-19-22 now 23 all good trucks, crappy dealers and service is what keeps me on my toes. Have to remind myself from time to time why I bought the 18 and haven’t gone back, a pos 2016 ram 1500 and a pos 2015 f150.

Why? I do not own a F150 or GM or RAM because of bad reliability.

Good for you, man. Porn is terrible. It ruins relationships, self-esteem, expectations, motivation, T-levels. And the industry is rife with trafficking.

I'm not trying to shame people who use it. Just pointing out many motivations for walking away. It's just obvious at this point that we weren't meant to see more naked women in one minute than even our grandfathers would see in a lifetime.

    Sorry for the derail.

    Everyone's truck sucks except mine!

    It's all about numbers.

99% of Gen3 owners may never have any engine problem during their lease or generally a typical short years of ownership. What owning a bunch of old vehicles taught me is that you gonna have every problem you could possibly find on the internet for that particular model if you keep it for long enough.

I perhaps should stop using a "reliability" word where I meant to say "longevity" or "durability". Gen 3 giving no problem in warranty period is by definition reliable. If 50% of them won't make it to 10 years without a major repair, it's not durable.

Though uptick in engine failures in Gen 3 compared to Gen 2 is certainly something that affects reliability.

I bought a new 2014 DC SR5 4wd. Put 100k on it and traded for a new 2019 CM TRD Sport 4wd. Kept it a little over 3yrs with 37k miles and traded for my 2022 CMLB TRD OR Premium 4wd. I traded when values were high and got all but $700 back for it. I've put 11k on it in the last 10 months. I loved the sound of my old V8 but I am enjoying the better power and mpg of this new truck. I pull a 16' enclosed trailer for my business about 4-5 days a month. The power delivery is so much better than before. My average mpg is up 3-4mpg. The mpg while towing is about 1-2mpg better. I have not regretted my decision 1 bit. I have not ridden in a 1794 or anything above an SR5. I find the seats to be comfortable. I do have the Softek seats vs cloth of my others. I am not a fan of leather seats so I originally didn't even want the ones I have but I have adapted to them and the wife loves the heated option. I have the 6.5' bed which is an upgrade over my previous CM and something I wouldn't do without while searching for my truck. I would still prefer cloth seats as these are cold in the winter. Anyway, the only things I would change is losing the TRD OR Prem. Only needed 4wd, the rest of the pkg features I could do without. I wanted the elec locking rear diff but I've not used it even once as I do no do any off roading. I did want the bigger screen and PVM. Those could of been had in a different package but I just chose from the available trucks coming in at the time. My opinion is do it, it's just money. But definitely drive one, that'll help make up your mind.

I just can't get past the looks of the Gen3...

Compared to the newly-announced 2024 Tacoma---which looks incredible, Toyota just missed the mark on the new Tundra. Lift one up, big wheels and tires, do something with the front end, and the truck is barely passable to me looks-wise.

And it's a shame too. 99.9% of the time when the next-generation vehicle of any kind comes out, it instantly looks better than the previous generation. At least to my eye (and many others), can't say that about the Tundra.

Easy solution - supercharger, 5.29 gears, and traction bars for the already awesome truck that you have. Then of course, the few other simple mods you want. After all that, start stuffing what you would pay in payments into a rubber fund and enjoy the ride!

Arguing about subjective looks is always kind of pointless, but I personally love the 14-21 front end when it’s color matched with a heritage grille. The pitbull snout looks tough and beefy, but also lends itself to a much better approach angle and turning radius than trucks with longer hoods. To each their own!

Have you considered going the opposite direction and finding a nice old restored classic with a few modern upgrades? Cheaper insurance!

Everyone can share their opinions. Can’t speak for anyone else but I never said it was ugly or unreliable, just that I want to see that it’s proven to be super reliable before I was to purchase one so I’d need a few years regardless. Supreme confidence in my tow vehicle is important to me for how I use it. I think they look really nice with a lift and tires. I also love the new celestial silver and blueprint colors and how they show off the lines. I don't like the tailgate/rear bumper design, but once again that is subjective.

You don’t have to come at people with hostility simply because they have a 2nd gen in their sig but have the apparent audacity to comment on 3rd gen related topics with suspicion around the reliability. Anyone who bought a 2nd gen post 2016 or so knew they weren’t getting the most technologically advanced truck out there but bought one anyway likely due to their reliability reputation, and data from resources like CR. Obviously many of us hold that aspect in high esteem, so it’s gonna come up. Early 3rd gen buyers probably have some different priorities. The 3rds may end up being very reliable, @Eurodriver is having good luck with his so far, but one must admit that’s pretty minuscule as far as data goes.

There was no disclaimer on the thread when I opened it and began reading that said a 2nd gen owner can’t comment on a 3rd gen thread and give their opinion. You see on a forum, literally everything is open for discussion and debate. Feel free to persuade people on the 2nd gen pages that if they’re looking to upgrade that they should consider a 3rd gen for reasons XYZ if you like. It’s all the tundra forum, and I don’t mind. That said, expect debate no matter what your opinion is cause that’s about all we do here.
