    I recently acquired a 2nd gen Toyota Tundra 4x4. It runs great and I love the ride. However there is this very problematic issue with the transmission engaging into reverse.

    When I shift from park/neutral/drive into reverse, there is a delay that can be anywhere from 5 seconds, all the way up to a minute plus. It’s worse when trying to engage into reverse at a decline.
    I’m going to try and flush the trans and change filter but not sure what to do if that doesn’t work.

    Anyone deal with this issue before?
    Any and all help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you all in advanced!

    I've not dealt w/that problem. How many miles on truck? Good choice to start w/a trans service.

    I know there are different schools of thought on doing the trans service; some say flush, some say drain and fill :notsure:

    Speaking from personal experience and hearing stories of others w/high mileage trucks, I sit on the side of the fence that says to only drain and fill (not flush). It is my understanding that older transmissions (especially ours) can kinda find a niche w/what they have in their systems for fluid and sludge. Sometimes removing everything (flush) can create a problem and some folks have reported having catastrophic failures immediately following a flush, especially when the trans has not been serviced in a while. Most of the techs I've spoke w/suggest drain and fill only and to use ONLY Toyota ATF WS. Just my opinion....

    I'm sure you'll have more folks w/considerable experience jumping on here to offer some thoughts and advice in the morning.

    Good luck w/finding a simple and inexpensive resolution.

    Thanks Tripleconpanna,

    miles 191000

    I’m not very mechanically inclined but able to do basic maintenance jobs. Everything else I use YouTube university lol. But I am unable to find anyone dealing with this exact issue. Most people experience issues shifting into other gears as well as reverse. But mines only in reverse. When I shift into reverse, the trans stays in neutral and takes time to engage, I don’t mind 5 sec delays, still humbug but it’s those min plus delays that got me really wanting to fix this thing. I’ll try posting a video to view. And will take your advice on draining and refilling with Toyota ATF. Praying that someone on here may have had the same issue and found a fairly affordable solution.

    There’s a newer thread on here I just skimmed through talking about the same problem and the issue being “solenoid D”

    let me go find it…

    EDIT: I realized OP had commented in the other thread already lol

    I would check the shift solenoids. I had this problem in a LandCruiser and while I was in there I swapped out all of the solenoids because I figured if one is going the other s may not be far behind. My problem was never seen again for over 10 years when I sold it

    I had something similar happen after my 21 sat for 10 days. Start and within a second put it in drive. Truck didn't pull as strong when I released the brake. Moved but I could tell it wasn't the same. Applied thr brakes, went back to park and right back to drive and all was fine. This was the first time the truck sat more than three days without being driven.
