Just another day going to work, another F-150 on fire on the side of the road.

Can you engage the locker any time on the third gen or just in 4 low like the taco? That was so annoying and I never understood the reasoning for it.

It’s super handy to just pop the locker on anytime I need it, even if it’s just to keep from tearing up the yard.

    Has to be in 4L.

    I like my 4A option

That's lame, I just don't see why Toyota does that. Especially when they make PreRunners with lockers.

Yeah the lack of 4A is honestly probably the biggest miss for the 3rd gen. In my opinion anyway. I could deal with the lack of tow hooks and the bump in the floor, maybe even the smaller cabin. But no 4A option really sucks. This won't be a popular opinion, but it's almost like maybe Toyota didn't really try to compete with the big 3 here. They just made a slightly bigger Tacoma to give their fan base another option.

And then to see how much we laugh when every guy on TW says he'd get an F150 anyway if he needed a bigger truck...

The new Taco you mean? It's trending favorably, better than the 3rd gen did.

Is it your opinion that Toyota has a sales problem with the Gen 3 Tundra?

I feel like Mike Sweers is the only reason the Tundra is missing these things. At least thats how it comes across. Cause, you know, hes a truck guy and doesnt need any of that nonsense for truck stuff.

Hilariously, the new Tacoma has full-time 4wd in one or two trims and a generator capability with the hybrid. The exact stuff no Tundra owners wanted.

at this point I'm not seeing what the non-hybrid tundra is missing compared to the others on the market that is significant. I mean maybe the tow hooks if your an off-roader, I get that

as far as the hybrid, I think toyota needs to add more to the package to make it worth it, losing the underseat storage and gaining some torque isnt going to cut it when all the weight negates the power

the non-hybrid runs like a raped ape, it has a ton of low end power and the 10 speed shifts really smooth and fast, so I just don't see much wrong.

4 Auto and a "max trailering" or "heavy duty payload" package with 2000+ lbs of payload would be my requests.

I mean it has good acceleration and seems to have plenty of power in most situations for 1/2 ton duties

Ok, I can see that if you want to squeeze a 1/2 ton for more

if I need to really carry 2k I’m just going bigger truck , but that’s just me

I don’t think anyone else offers a true 2k in crew cab 4x4 decently high trims do they ?

I thought most were skimmed down unicorns you can hardly find

I don’t need 2k as I have a cargo van if I need a bunch of payload so for me it doesn’t matter , but I get the payload thing, you can never have enough

I’ve had 4 wheel drive auto before and I didn’t seem to use it a ton but there is always something one doesn’t have the others do

If you are talking about your Ram's 4Auto then it is not the same as Ford or GM's 4Auto I dont think. My understanding of it now is that Ram's is just Automatic 4x4. I dont find that very useful either.

I do quite like the active 4Auto in my F150 though. But Toyota's very own Torsen Full-Time 4wd is even better, which is whats so disappointing. I wheel'd my GX460 pretty good this weekend and there was only a couple times where I actually needed to lock the center diff and that was when I was lifting tires completely off the ground. Otherwise I just left it in 4Lo unlocked and it just did its thing.

I guess I don’t off-road so I don’t really care that much about that but if it’s important then maybe they should have included it on the off road models or something.

i was just trying to think of something that Toyota was missing for my use as compared to a non hybrid f-150 platinum , that’s more money anyways

I would truly miss the entire back window rolling down a lot , that stupid little porthole on the f-150s I tested just wasn’t anywhere near the same. I like the 14” screen in the tundra as well, it’s super clear , the f-150 was better than gm in that regard, didn’t care for the screen or placement in the gm

zone lighting was nice now that I think of it, but I was thinking it would be brighter

the tundra with the coils and avs with air rides much better as far as that goes .

the tundra 10 speed is better than the ford or the gm imo.

That not a 1/2 ton. My 2022 F150 with 1400lbs in the bed was maxed out. Plenty of power but short on brakes and handling. If felt like a toy truck. 2000lbs is F250/350 territory which is what I usually have.

Ford does have two versions of 4A. The better of the two being the HiLock which is a better system (for most I believe) when paired with also having true 4x4, especially paired with the Torsten in the front diff. Of course the HiLock can only be had on Raptor and Tremor high package(and maybe Limited?).

I’ll take you guys word for it but I’ve never had a problem doing anything I’ve needed to do in my tundras or ram so something other than the part time 4wd wasn’t a purchase consideration for me

kinda funny , I wouldn’t buy a tundra hybrid , it’s not worth it, but would buy a ford non hybrid, lol

the powerboost was fast and had a shit ton of power before it crapped out , but the drivetrain was clunky. I wanted the generator for sure if I was going ford

    Here's my take.
-F150 3.5 motor a little better. Some of this might be it's crisper because it's a lighter truck. I do think the Tundra could go on a diet. How anyone that likes a Tacoma could bitch about Tundra power is a mystery.
-I don't give a rip about 4A. The Tundra has plenty of 4WD modes for my use.
    - 10spd in the tundra is much more sorted. None of the bangs and general confusion my F150 would offer up at times. Sometime going into reverse seemed like it might drop the drive shaft. Shitty SW.
    - Flat floor and rear storage hands down F150. One of the few things I'll miss.
    - I like the roll down window too. I never opened the port hole. Now that I think about it, what's the point?
    - Suspension and ride hands down Tundra. Older Tundras ride like a log wagon by comparison. One of the reasons it was failing and outdated in the market.
    - Obviously I had a horrid experience with my buyback F150 but I'm not alone. The statistics for Ford are terrible and seem to be getting worse based on the CEO's discussions with analysts last week. I had a phenomenal deal on any Ford I wanted and walked away. I'm giving my long Ford relationship a rest for a while.
Now I just need to get the damn Tundra delivered. 2 weeks.

Wait, you had a Ford blow up too?

I don't get it with the hybrid either. I do think that's part of Toyotas overall product management strategy. Yes, in a Prius. In a Tundra? Not so much is my take.

Ya I heard a little about the quality concerns of that , kinda says something the CEO comes out and talks about it . Hopefully they get it together more and the next time around I’ll give them another look.

right now, I’m happy as a pig in slop getting this platinum tundra instead of the ford I was shopping. It’s more refined, dead silent and love the look and feel of it

Ya , on the test drive, I’m not allowed to say it anymore or I get in trouble with our resident ford guy bannerman, lol

but it took a shit and I passed on the sale, and just waited for Toyota to get the early build problems sorted out and here we are , and I’m really happy with it so far , it’s the best riding , most refined , quietest cabin, most advanced truck I’ve had and also better than the others I tested , I was more disappointed with the gmc at4, rode like shit , seats were god awful. I was going to buy the ford way before that thing.

And agreed , ford has Toyota licked with the hybrid truck deal at the moment , I wanted the generator and it was stupid fast, although clunky
