This is with 6000 miles in the odo purchased start of April so not any winter driving. Going to take it in next week I’m thinking I’ve got crap paint. This is my 4th tundra never seen this before. Would have spent the money on 3m if I’d known this was coming.

Unless your daily commute is through a shipyard, there’s no reason your paint should get beaten up so badly.

Though, oversized tires are tough on paint. Not sure what your setup is.

Welcome to modern vehicles where they use less paint and other thinner lighter materials to shave weight to please the emissions gestapo. All modern vehicles will chip quick and easy because the paint is super thin. I have a little more mileage than you on my Tacoma and I have rock chips on my doors because I live on a dirt road. Just a fact of life.

Better 3M the whole truck. Toyota isn't know for good paint for a while now, especially the Super White single stage. Considering where it's at, the dealer might not do much or just touch up paint. I keep finding spots like that on my 20, nothing much to do but add touch up paint.

Wonder what the longterm effects will be a result of thin paint.

Wondering if I have a warranty claim, truck is bone stock. My ford trucks I expect this and 3m them from new but first time I’ve seen this on a tundra. Now that it’s chipped up I can’t put 3m over it not sure what I’m going to do.

Gonna be an uphill fight, Toyota's warranty us for peeling, bubbling... basically failure to adhere without outside factors causing it. "Shouldn't have chipped so easily" will be hard.

It hasn't been single stage for years. I go fishing with a guy who retired painting Toyotas in Indiana, and he says single stage was phased out back when he worked there.

Toyotas Super White is a single stage paint. I read somewhere that there is even a class action lawsuit because Super White sucks, to put it lightly. I owned a 11 Super White, I had the matte spot issues. Buffing it made it a bit better but it still came back. You could tell there was no clear. Here's a letter from Toyota stating it's a single stage. Also if you scroll down a bit on that site there is a PDF from Toyota about paint protection. The only paint that doesn't have protection is Super White (040)if the model vehicle came in that color.

I would check for a local body shop that can apply what I would call a paint match bedliner like material. The name of it escapes me but I had it done on a former truck due to the same type of issue and it worked great. Protects the area and blended in well

That’s a good idea, I was thinking maybe black 3m along that edge as the fender flares are black, either way going to cost me some cash

It used to be. Around 2015 or so they stopped doing single stage. They didn't change the paint code or name, but they changed it due to the oxidation complaints. https://www.autogeekonline.net/foru...ught it was,2015, due to oxidation complaints.

I though the 18-19-22 I’ve had were good paint but maybe just this super duper red shows the chips more, others were 2 mesquite and 1 was grey.

Do they not put chipguard on the body panels like they did with the 1st gens?

Is that with or without mud flaps? I have a red trd sport coming and in Canada at least it comes with mud flaps. Looks like this would stop a lot of those chips?

Just the little oem ones, likely a proper aftermarket set would help.

I don’t know when they changed it but it was still in use. When you said it hasn’t been used in years, I took it as they stopped 20-30 years ago. Lots of people couldn’t believe at the time that Toyota was using this paint. Even Honda uses it or used also. My 2011 had that crap paint. I never bothered Toyota with it because it was a used truck to me but some people were getting their trucks re-painted or panel re-paints. I do remember that they did bring out SW2 that was supposed to fix the issue. I just swore to never get a white truck again. Instead I went with the worse color, black.

I know my 20 has that but not on the bumper plastic. I think since Toyota made the plastic bumper in conjunction with the bed they didn’t use it in there. It probably would t happen it it had it.

I ran my 2005 Tacoma with factory paint in the woods for work, had over 300k on it and the factory paint had minimal damage. Looks like they are making paint sub par. My 2022 Tacoma in lunar rock has unbelievably soft paint and the hood is full of little picks that catch the microfibre cloth. But hey it must be saving the environment huh?

Update, $1440 later in 3M, bumpers, behind back door on box, rockers, hood bra, roof bra, black wrap over rear bumper bad part and I’m back in business, toyota said wear and tear are not covered by warranty. The supersonic red is a 4 stage paint imo just not a durable paint job and a bad color to show chips.

Funny you would mention 4 stage in a durability concern post. The truth behind the 4 stage label here is that the paint is so thin that you are seeing through the “paint” to the e coat layer. With a few exceptions of course. None that apply here.

The body shop that did the wrap/3m for me said they’ve noticed the decline in paint durability across manufacturers, said business is good for them.

Issue still continues to thou on super white. Just had a coworker trade in a 2019 Taco immediately when white started to flake

My understanding is going to water based paints has affected durability. I distinctly remember vehicles in the 90s I could get dings and dents without the paint usually coming off but on anything I owned since about 2000 it didn't seem to work out that way anymore.Far more fragile.

2020 Toyota still used single stage paint. Was told by the manufacturer that they blend the clear with the 040 white but still single stage. Believe what you will

Oh yes, it’s because paint adds so much weight and upsets the EPA. It’s more like companies are greedy and will find anyway to cheapen out. Why would you defend Toyota in this scenario and blame some government agency instead? As an engineer I will never understand people who want to halt progress…and progress will never happen without goals set in place. Could you imagine what vehicles would be like if we never enforced some sense of emissions rules? Trucks with 5mpg all over?

You're projecting hyperbole onto my statement that was not there. You'll have to look elsewhere for your boogeyman.

No I don’t think I need to look elsewhere. I read loud and clear that thin paint was because we are required by some agency to keep our vehicles light. All because paint is a weight savings, not a cost savings to the corporation.
