Agreed. I can't stand the people who think that anyone who has different needs or priorities than them is stupid. I haven't installed a cooler but I don't go around trying to convince the guys who have that they wasted their money.

In the end, we won't know for probably another 5 years when the trucks with no coolers have much higher milage. I'm just taking the $1000 bet on putting the cooler in. If I'm wrong welp I'm out $1000 but my fluid will definitely last longer. I want this to be the last daily driver I buy so Im doing everything possible.

Yep. Some people seem to get mad for no reason at how others spend their own money. No one goes in to lift threads and says the stock suspension is sufficient and you’re wasting your money on aftermarket stuff. Or tires. Or radio. But this cooler seems to only be the extremes on each side.

If it weren’t for this subject there would be nothing to discuss and argue about.

it is a Toyota forum after all.

side note: although I capitulated and added a cooler it is amazing and also undeniable that in late 2022 we have yet to see a rash of transmission failures of any kind much less due to thermal issues on 2019 or 2020 trucks.

face it the ab60f is insanely tough.

2019s of other brands have had multiple times more failures for host of reasons that is well outside their proportion of total trucks. And those trucks have more thermal management capabilities to boot.

toyota yanks the cooler and runs temps waaayyy up and still no rash of failures.

    it’s hilarious.

toyota be like: we are gonna over temp our transmission and still get better reliability.

    lol

Honestly, I really do hope this is the case. But for myself and many others, not gonna take the chance. This will hopefully be the last truck I buy.

For the same cost of the coolers being sold or spoken about on this forum check out and extended warranty at a similar cost as the one mentioned from Toyota on this forum. Not only is the trans covered but pretty much all the other important stuff one might be concerned with.

Id prefer to just not break down to begin with than have to fight an extended warranty company to fix something that at 200k they will just call wear and tear. Remember, if extended warranties didn't make money, they wouldn't exist.

We are talking what I paid for a Toyota warranty, not aftermarket. If you feel the need for a cooler go for it but check out B&M or Hayden.

I already installed the Setrab 20 from Genuine Cooler Systems, all OEM parts besides the cooler which is higher quality than Hayden or B&M. Toyota warranty definitely better than a 3rd party I'd assume but none the less, they exist solely because they make Toyota if they didn't they wouldn't exist.
I run my OBDLink MX+ while driving with no issues at all. Not sure what would make Veepeak different, probably just a disclaimer.

Know if I can just swap the puck out without atf loss? Had my cats stolen and the thief sliced into it. Now the puck has a drip which I’m guessing is coolant, but seems more like atf fluid.

If your truck has been left for an hour or so, you won’t lose much atf fluid at all once removed, maybe a soda cap full will drip out, pin the thermostat to ensure that drains as well

    sorry about your cats

ATF will have a very distinct smell compared to coolant. You could try jacking up the passenger side of the truck when swapping to try and get the atf to flow back into the pan but the same bolts also hold the thermostat on so any ATF in the lines might also come out. You could try to collect what comes out and out it back in but might be a good idea to just do a drain and fill of the pan then do the check procedure to be sure, only need 4 quarts.

Pinch the lines with a couple vice grips might do the trick.

    To add to this thread.

When the truck was packed full of people, I was heading uphill to Sequoia. The transmission temp sensor went off. After the trip, I took it by a place and they replaced the fluid. I then did another trip to Big Bear and the temp sensor went off yet again because:
    1. I was offroading
    2. the truck was loaded.
After the trip, I once again paid for another fluid replacement.

After that, I installed a trans cooler. Since then, I have never received an over temp indication. I have a 2011 4.6L and it has been 100% worth it.

Ahh I forgot to add. Now that I have the trans cooler (obviously with a thermostat), the oil has never exceeded 230F and I usually float around 180-200F.

Hello Tundra family. I'm a long time ih8mud Land Cruiser but now that I've shook hands on a 2019 Tundra I need to get educated.

I just saw there's no transmission cooler, I am tripping out and I'm tempted to back out of the agreement to buy the 2019 Tundra now.

What the......... Was Toyota thinking??? I specifically bought this truck for our jayco 6000 lb trailer. Our 2007 Toyota Tundra 4.7 l struggles at altitude.

Hahaha, I already feel at home, thanks.

You know if Toyota would have kept the 5.7 With the new frame and the 10-speed tranny that would have been a beautiful thing.

I'll look up genuine cooler. Thank you. Is this the best one I want to buy once cry once?

    Lol, Upgrades already

Anything else I should address? This is a 2019 limited Tundra. We plan to use as our cross country long haul camping trips with our 6,000 lb jayco trailer.

We went to Minnesota last summer to get the trailer from California and we brought our 2007 Toyota Tundra 4.7 l. Oh and it has a transmission cooler. No problems there..... Uhh Toyota what were you thinking !!!

She did okay but struggled quite a bit above. 3 to 4,000 ft. She's geared 410, I considered stripping her down rebuild /refresh everything like the Land Cruiser re-gearing to 488 or 456. Doing a few other things and making that our long-haul truck, but it's not near as nice or as comfortable as the 2019 Limited.

Long trips with radar cruise control while towing is going to be sweet!

Thanks for the info on the kit. Soon as I get the truck this will be the first thing I do.

    @nobodyintexas this kit? https://genuinecoolingsystems.com/

Welcome to the club! And to the great debate.
A transmission cooler is IMO a nice add but not necessary. Those of us who tow heavy in 4th gear don’t see the transmission temp problem. Generally they settle in around 210 to 220. However if you want to tow in overdrive these transmissions generate a lot of heat. There is a lot going on inside and the clearances are tight.
I think that one of the big reasons that these trucks use a lot of fuel is that the transmission is not very efficient.

Good stuff, thanks, I was wondering about towing an overdrive we used to tow whether our 2007 Sequoia around 6,000 lb and then our 2005 Sequoia. No transmission temperature issues at all, but I never towed in fifth

I haven't read the manual yet, but I heard through the grapevine the 5.7L was made to towing overdrive but that would be the first truck. Besides like a Ford super Duty I've heard that's a thing.

How much weight you pulling and over what kind of distance?

I imagine one of the first orders of business will be finding the TSB for fluid change similar to other sealed transmissions from Toyota. I've had this 2019 only has 50,000 MI but I'll be baselining everything front rear diff transfer case you name it.

The manual does not specifically say don’t tow in overdrive but it is very quick to downshift.
I have a 6,600 pound as loaded travel trailer that I have towed from MI to Utah without issue. The truck loves towing in 4th. In fact it gets the same mileage as towing in 5th.
