geez, good thing some of you guys didnt buy a big 3 truck so you'd be waiting for ever on heated steering wheels, parking sensors, heated seats, and on and on, lol.

    That would be even worse.

There's a right way and it's simple clear and solid communication with a deadline say September 2023 you will have a fob simple clear communication with a firm date.

graphics cards are in oversupply and even network switches and firewall backlogs are clearing out so I'm having a hard time buying Toyota is still having issues. Also they have phone as a key in the headunit just turn it on.

    Lots of stuff!
When we got ours in October last year, there was no mention of key shortages. Maybe they got enough fobs North of the border or something else dictated that the Canadian sold trucks get 2 fobs from the start? It does seem weird that we also get 3 years of Toyota app usage included.

I think we need a another key fob thread: "Who's NOT waiting for a second key fob" ;)

Just bought mine this week, waiting for delivery. Didn't know this was a thing. Anyone try aftermarket FOBs in the meantime?

my dealer didnt say anything and just referred me to the sticker from toyota. i am suspecting some salespersons are just throwing a month out there to appease buyers since toyota never gave a firm timeframe. at least for my region.

Exactly. Dealers are just making shit up. But then what else can they do when Toyota won't provide any real information. Just like the tonneau cover recall, Toyota's reticence to discuss the remedy or cause just leads people to fill that void with conjecture and speculation. See also all the folks putting loc-tite on their tonneau cover bolts. LOL.

personally, i rather they not make up a line and just be quiet. otherwise people just get mad and then they just kick the can to toyota so the buyer gets mad at someone besides the dealer.

but meh, ive had a super relationship with my dealer over the years so they pretty much shoot from the hip anyway and dont mince anything with me at least. they get tired of me calling them out anyway.

between the forums here keeping me up to date and researching, i pretty much know resolutions before they do anyway.

Dealer sent me to Toyota Customer Experience, so gave them a call yesterday. Support person said that Toyota North America will be sending out a letter somewhere between the next two weeks and late summer regarding latest. I also asked about availability of the digital key capability, and was given a shit excuse that not all Gen3 Tundras will support a digital key even if you are paying for all the connected services.

That really narrows it down. LOL. And my $ would be bet on "late summer" becoming fall and beyond.

toyota probably wont endorse digital key since that will encroach on a lexus feature. they rather you upgrade to a lexus.

i know you can do the digital key by 3rd party since ive seen it done on other toyota's unofficially.

Purchased truck at the end of April. Told 30 days, it's been 60.
I called Toyota last week to ask them about time frame, they gave me a generic answer that I would get it at the start of summer, which to me in Texas was last month.

We have a cabin in the middle of nowhere in Missouri, I always have a second set in my wife's purse in case I lose them.
I asked Toyota, what happens if I lose the one key and I need Toyota to two my truck and do whatever they do at the dealership so I can use my truck. She told me she opened a ticket and if that happens I would call them and they would put another ticket in for a courtesy... can't recall the wording, but basically they would do it for free. It's not been tested so if something happens we will se, but the nearest dealership is 90 mins away. It's going to cost a lot of money to get it towed and get a new FOB/keys.

Off topic, but not entirely. On my 2016 I had a key cut and used a magnetic holder as a spare to open the door, the key did not have a chip so it wouldn't start the vehicle. I kept my spare key and FOB in the center console so if I lost they keys I could get the spare, get the chip key and be fine. I do this because I do a lot of activities that aren't key friendly like mountain biking and kayaking.

My question is what do I do with the FOB now. I tried locking it in the bed this weekend, up front, too close the tailgate so it opened when I tried. I don't take my phone with me. Is there a box or something I can put the FOB in so the truck doesn't sense it as a back-up ? I have a Diamondback cover so the bed can be locked securely.

Better yet, can I turn off the proximity sensors on the truck ?

You can disable the RF on the FOB. I believe you hold "lock" then press "unlock" 3 times. You'll see the red light flash if it's successful.

Purchased my truck at the end of jan and decided I wasn’t happy waiting on Toyota to get around to sending the letter auth. 2nd fob.

Called parts dept and discovered they had them in stock. No negotiating with dealer so just bought one and had it programed (all same day) because I got the same answer as you when I called toyota.

The hidden key might work best for you but having 2 fobs now was worth the extra cost for me.

I bought my 23 tundra in November. I had no idea I would only get one key until I took delivery. Being surprised that I wasn't made aware I would only get one key, I asked that they gave me paperwork stating they owed me a key.

I just took it in for its 10,000 mi service. I asked them about my key. And showed them the paperwork stating that they owed me a key. I was told since I had the paperwork the dealership I worked with would take responsibility and order me the key.

Supposedly it'll be here in 3 days. Now I just need to wait and see.

I was told the only reason why they were doing it was because I had documentation from the dealer stating the dealership owed me a key.

After I told my friend that I've been waiting over 5 months now for my second key, he decided he did not want to wait after receiving his new truck three weeks ago. He went fishing instead. Locked his truck at the boat ramp and then stashed his key under a log about 100yds away from his truck. He then called Toyota and told them he'd just lost his key overboard and was now stuck at the boat ramp with his boat still in the water. 25 mins later the local dealership arrived, programmed a new key, and he was good to go. Now he has two keys and his blood pressure issue is resolved. His advice is to pick a lake that is within 5 miles of a dealership, so delivery will be prompt and you won't be inconvenienced or annoyed by the wait.

Stopped by the dealer $240 for a FOB without a key.

Boat story. Was the FOB and delivery free?

What's funny about all this is when I sold my 2016 the second set of key and FOB was never used still had the metal code on the key ring so I don't know why this is bugging me so much. But it really irks me they have them to sell for profit but no enough to get them to customers that paid for them.

Here's the update Toyota sent out that was being quoted in the above video. Just got this from a guy at the dealership when I pressed for a timeline. The way I'm reading the doc, my truck was built in May so I'm looking at Q1 2024 to get my 2nd fob. I did get the second cut key to go with the fob when I got the truck, so I know it's coming...

I’m just happy Toyota didn’t do the who holding back features deal like seats, lighting, heated steering wheel etc then a dealer has to take your shit apart later to add it .

I just bought a second fob while I wait then I’ll have three and move on with life
