Sold my crawler Tacoma, new to the tundra scene

Hey guys, very happy to be here and learn a lot. I went full ham on my 2008 Tacoma build and sold it to a good friend & now I’m in a much better suited truck for family life. 2014 151k on it (bought private sale from original owner). 5.7L CM TRD RD. I have since put some fresh 275/70 nittos on it, a honeycomb grille, ceramic tint & next up will be some OEM LED headlights with the iHacker harness. Thanks guys.

Thanks for the warm welcome, lads. Although we all love to go full ham on builds - I’m 34 now with 3 kids & when it comes to what we need my truck for, having the stock truck is just so wonderful. I love having the mildly beefy “33’s” & stock comfort and reliability. My Tacoma had an e front locker (Eaton) and factory rear locker, 5:29 gears, MARLIN lca brace kit, full armor, winch, bobbed front and rear frame rails / dangles, it was quite a unit & a lot of fun. Yeah I was lucky enough to find this 2014 tundra for $23.500 with great dealer service records & one owner as stated. Coming up on 155k now. I did notice both sides of the engine show a cam tower weep. I will keep a close eye on oil levels. For now, no dripping onto the exhaust or driveway and levels are steady.

Threw some paint on my skid and recovery points. Looking to “poor man’s TRD pro” looking front end. Hahaha. Came out nice & i plan to hole saw the skid soon for easy oil filter access as well as trim the wings a tad for future wheel spacers or slightly larger tires. On another note I’m pretty bummed to see how extensive my cam tower weep looks. I’ll be keeping an Eagle eye on it for sure, I’ll be keeping a close eye on oil levels

 

Scored this minty boi on eBay, OEM used assembly with a repaired tab for $110. Found a DS one with a similar tab situation for $150 and grabbed it also

 

Go full ham on Tundra too. Kids will enjoy it. I say that as a 40-something with 5 kids. Some of my wife's favorite pics of kids are from rides where i took a couple of them to trails.

TRD OR skid is a joke. Get RCI steel one, it is beefy and has a filter access door.

 

I am aware of the tin can skid plate construction. I had and used full steel skids and sliders on my Tacoma. I will not need them for this truck nor do I want to spend the money on skids.

 

For about a dozen reasons I decided to carpet my bed & I will be building a permanent half platform / drawer slide on one side and a hinged butterfly panel that can be opened up to cover the whole platform so that I have a massive sleeping area for camping.
$75 worth of indoor outdoor marine grade carpet from Lowe’s & some glue & I used plastic push pins into all of the bed holes too for a few different reasons. The fit and finish I’m not proud of, cutting the carpet and getting it to stick against all of the contours was not easy or fun in 110* heat but I’m stoked on the finished product.
I still have to build the platform obviously. I sold the plastic oem drop in liner for $100 so this project has cost me nothing but time & sweat

Thanks everyone. I snagged some clearance / discontinued wheels for stupid cheap so I’m going to buy some 315/70/17 C load KO2’s and wrap them on these bad boys. At the very most I’ll throw in a front 0.5” front spacer to equal 1” front lift but I’ve already made a ton of clearance with repositioning the fender liners forward and re-securing them. I will do my own CMC if necessary but I doubt it considering the wheels are a +45 offset and I currently have a ton of room back there.

 

Can’t wait to get this bed project finished

Made some more progress on my bed buildout. Still need to make another piece of carpeted plywood but I have the last bottom support finished & added some cleats and a storage divider. Threw some bargain bin, clearance paint on it & it’s coming together. Need to buy different style hinges for the plywood to be able to open up (not doing drawers).
