Having been a long term Ford owner, mostly Super Duty, I ended up with an F150 lemon. 43 consecutive days in the shop and Ford is buying it back. I joined the forum to learn about current Tundras and it's been great for that. ALL of the trucks have trade offs. I drove everything 3 times and Ford made it very, very attractive financially for me to get another F150. I almost pulled the trigger on another F150 when I stopped by the Ford dealer yesterday. I was talking to the service guys and they have another F150 doing exactly what mine did which is communication failure between the assorted modules. I just couldn't go there again, great deal or not.

After having driven everything I chose the 1794 for the following reasons:

    1. The best ride. Whatever they've done in the rear suspension it's well sorted.
    2. Fit, finish and solid feeling. It was the tightest one. No wind noise.
    3. Easy to order. With the big 3 you have to speak the language to get the option Rubik's cube right. Tougher still in that some content is deleted. The Tundra was easy. Get a 1794 with ADV and steps and I'm good to go. The one I'm getting doesn't have all the added protection stuff.
    4. Good tunes. I think the JBL is better than the Ford B&O flavors. Credit to GMC for a good system and I think their refresh has the best interior of anyone.
    5. Lastly, and one of the biggest reasons. The Toyota service department had the fewest despondent customers and no zombie trucks on the back lot. Go to a Ford dealership and ask them how many trucks have been there 30 days +.

At any rate, I appreciate everyone letting me be a tourist while I figured this out.
I should have the truck in 4 weeks. Can't wait.

While we can't say whether your (any one of ours?) new Tundra will implode in a way more spectacular way that any one Ford ever did, welcome to the club!
You appear to be one smart[er]ex Ford owner.

...and I only say that b/c a good friend of mine had a 2018 Tundra for a while (100% trouble-free). He "fell in love" with a 2022 Ford Raptor. He then got one. Within 3K miles he had 1 turbo failure, cat failure and a couple of other small things. Ford saw shavings in oil pan....replaced the whole damn motor on that truck! Guess what - less than 1K miles a turbo went on it again. After all this, multiple weeks in service and "cust service as crap[y as I've ever seen" (his words, not mine) FoMoCo bought that damn thing back from him (just last week).

Know what he did?.....................went out and got the EXACT SAME (down to the color) replacement truck!
"What can I say, I'm still in love with it..."
    LoL

I almost bought another one. The pull of a brand is pretty strong and Ford really tries to get you to buy another Ford in the buyback process. Had they not said they had another truck that bricked like mine I probably would have.

I’m excited about getting the Tundra.

Perhaps I gave you too much credit...
    :p

    PS:
They couldn't entice me to buy one more of their trucks again, even if it came with a 5star hooker included free for "unlimited mileage!"
    Why?
A loooong time ago I had a wonderful F150 Supercrew, which decided to grenade it's rear differential at exactly 36,400 miles.
Ford refused to do anything. "Sorry, not under warranty any more."
Had a legit 4x4 shop rebuild that rear diff, and sold the effin thing 2 weeks later.
Then (after a few wonderful years with a Tacoma) I went back to F150 in 2013 for a growing family and a need of a full size truck. Didn't like that gen's Tundra's looks and decided to give the big F another try.
Just over 60,000 miles later, when one of the turbos started leaking I've decided to divorce from Ford and cut ties forever.

I'm a long time Ford guy and their descent into mediocre quality is going to kill them. Alan Mullaly is sorely missed in the corner office.

I've seen the horror stories and read the forums and for my first full size truck I didn't even consider Ford. A shame, really.

Welcome to a Toyota! Wishing you a great experience!

Welcome! Hope you don't get any of the issues in the new gen that others have.

Even if you do, you're still better off than a Found On Road Dead.

Congrats, but I'm about to jump to f150 powerboost with the new blackout packages whenever one comes in.

Only reason is the fit and finish of the tundra erks me so bad, definitely not a 55-60k truck. If I don't have any other Toyotas or only seen Tacoma or tundra interiors - I would probably brush this off, but I have 2 Camrys a 2014 and 2010 that were like 25-30k and the fit and finish is so much better.

The only thing I like about the tundra is exterior looks, engine and tranny combos were awesome, but everything else was just subparr vs my other trucks/rides

I sold my 2010 Tacoma in 2013, with 106K miles on it, for $21,000 in cash, on Craigslist...in 2 days!

I have never owned a Ford due to my experience with Fords in my family when growing up. The only Ford worth anything was an early 60's truck that my grandfather had. That's the first vehicle I drove - through cow pastures. I still can't believe Ford has so much market share considering their frequent unreliability.

Hi all, I just joined the forum and it’s great to hear what you all are saying about the F-150’s. Right now I have a 2017 Tacoma and a 2013 Sequoia. I’ve found myself needing more for towing and payload capacity. I’ve thought about the Ford because of their max tow package and their 7050 payload package. It’s enticing, but I’m nervous to move away from the Toyota brand. I’ve had zero problems with either. I wish the Tundra had a bit more payload capacity, but I think I can live with it.

I’d agree with most except my two gen 3 tundras didn’t have good fit and finish. Panel gaps, bed creaked, interior pieces creaked.

And the jbl is good but not better than the B&O unleashed to me.

Also confused about the ordering comment. Tundra is one truck you can’t order.

3rd gens are solid mechanically. The fit and finish is not on par with older tacos and tundras. Some trim levels may be different. I attribute it to supply chain issues and Covid and trying to compete to a price point with the big three for a lot of that plus being a new gen all at the same time. But definitely a notch below what many people including myself expect from a new Toyota.

I'm surprised on the fit and finish. The panel gaps on my F150 are 50% greater than the Tundra I drove. Nothing else works but no rattles in my F150. The Tundras I've driven felt tighter though. I think a lot of that is the rear suspension being more settled.

I misspoke when I said ordering. I should have said buying. It's just easier with the higher end trims being more inclusive. The F150 has probably 10-12 items added onto the lariat to get to what I want and then they delete items due to availability.

Lastly, again, I don't think putting a Super Duty in the same sentence as a 1/2 ton is a good analog. I've had 5 SD's and they're great but a much bigger pain in the ass around town and in general it's a big truck. They only make sense to me for pulling which is what I used them for.

Yeah Toyota is way better about picking a trim and then just having a few pluses or minuses on items. Ford has toned it down although I don’t know if it was to streamline or cost cut and part availability

? Ok not sure why your comparing 350, 1 ton and bigger commerical 450 being used in a business state meaning the drivers beat the living shit out of them since it's a company truck.

I have no issue with Ford, I dunno why they sell close to 1 mill a year and tundra barely eclipses 100k annually, I guess there are 900k owners that don't see the value in a tundra every single year and choose Ford over it.

My gf mom has a ex forest/park ranger/game warden f150 that was lifted by the gov has like 250k miles and on og engine with a rebuilt tranny. This truck is 20+ years old, and runs like a champ with original motor, I was super hesitant when she got it but she paid like $2500 and been driving it for like past 5 years lol. I am actually super surprised since all the other older tundra frames started to rust out already

Don't confuse what Ford used to be vs what they are trying to be.

What Ford is trying to do is mildly interesting but their execution is awful. Three proof points- 1. 2x the warranty cost per vehicle of GM. 2. Only Land Rover has more defects per car than Ford. Ford is almost dead last. 3. They are transitioning to EV's and losing $60,000 on each EV they sell. I'll add a fourth for a bonus- They just closed down $4Billion they spent on autonomous driving. They got nothing for it. This disconnect on strategy and execution is startling.

The warranty issue is large enough to have an impact on earnings per share so two things happen: They squeeze suppliers to cover the cost of poor quality parts and they make claims more difficult. I got caught in that squeeze. It's a bad place to be.

The bill of materials cost on a full feature set vs. reduced content isn't much. Most of that cost is offset by reduced inventory, i.e. having seats that have the heaters built in even if they aren't enabled. They just build one seat in that instance.

The grand view is that the feature sets are enabled by the gateway module discussed above. At assembly, they enable seat heaters, rains sensing wipers or whatever. Sounds good but here again, they're learning and the execution hasn't been great. Ask any service department about gateway modules and see what they say.

In the future, Ford has discussed being able to locate and shut the car off if you're not making payments. Are you friggin' kidding? They can't make the mirrors work correctly right now.

Watch the financials, it's a company in a bad spot right now. I'm taking a break from them but I hope they recover.

I got a taste of that when I tested Toyota , ford powerboost, and gm 6.2AT4

the ford broke down on the test drive.

I just waited until Toyota ironed out production and got a good 1 or two years of production on the new truck and it’s really awesome

dead nuts quiet and tight. Super smooth, rides a shit ton better then my 16

One thing I liked about the f 150 that the Tundra doesn’t do is the rear seats that fold up and with no compartment underneath on the lower trim models. So that was going to be great for our dog, lying down on the floor space. I know there’s a whole thing about the tundra hump bit that doesn’t bother me, it’s the compartments and lack of floor area when folded up.

Maybe there’s a way to do a seat delete for half of the seats in back of the Tundra, so just a permanent dog space. I’m still looking over the forum but did not see yet ideas on that subject.

100% agree. I used the flat floor in my F150 almost everyday. Tool storage, the dog and so on. That and the extended range tank are probably the biggest features I'll miss. None of it matters though if it's sitting at the dealer which is what happened to me.
