The Tundra V-8 doesn't seem to have any real issues with oil consumption...even at very high mileage. There's an outlier here and there, but nothing like certain vintages of 4 banger Camrys which have allegedly followed the 10K recommended oil change intervals.

The beef with the manual for both oil weight and oci that Toyota is under pressure to reduce reported cost of ownership and environmental impact. We want to know what those variables are without those external pressures - what does the engineering say? Best guess is 5w30 every 5k.

There are quite a few arguments in other threads on this issue. Cliff notes:

Same engine sold outside the US calls for 5w30. The US owners manual hints at using heavier weight for hard running, implying better protection.

The severe service schedule calls for changes every 5k. Qualifying as service is pretty open to anything but gentle use in moderate temperatures.

    Again, best guess.

    I don't think it's a guess.

I've seen pages from official toyota service docs for the 5.7 engine showing 4 different oil types available. Yet the US manual calls for 0W20.

Referring to the pressure Toyota gets for low cost ownership claims and environmental claims.

Oil types and oci being available is different than oil types and oci being recommended.

Key word is recommended. Owners are free to do whatever they feel they want with something they own. We shouldn’t be so concerned and worried with what others do with their own vehicles.
