That is a fact. Horses are a spendy hobby and some don't have even wind breaks for them.

I have seen some pretty kick ass barns and some really shit ones lately on our home search. My oldest wants a horse, I told her she can have one after medical school.

My wife has four horses and they are not cheap. Money pits! Most of the people I build barns for have 20k-50k per horse. Trust me your daughter will save a lot of money owning a nice car over a horse. Lol

Oh my daughter is 8 years old. She wants to be a doctor. So after she pays for medical school....she can get one for herself. Lol

Unless we get 5-6 acres and even then the grain cost gets spendy.

The grain is only the beginning of the expenses. I never realized how much money horses were until we had them.
That's awesome that your daughter wants to be a doctor.

Oh I know. My uncle had about 10k acres in Montana and refused to own horses. If he couldn't get there with his trusty 78' F250 high boy, it just wasn't meant to be.

Kinda makes me wonder though if we just have no need for them anymore and cause more health problems. I mean what did the coy boys and Indians do in the 1800's? Lol.

Show horses and race horses are big money though! It's crazy how if you have a well trained riding horse you can lease the horse out for someone to ride. So you still own the horse but someone else pays to maintain it, feed it and they just ride it.

What were the businesses? I really admire the spirit behind what you have done. I never had the courage and have lived my life as a grinder. Helped a couple entrepreneurs become millionaires.

All different ones, no correlation. Made a bunch of mistakes along the way, accepted and learned from it.

After college, worked as a computer programmer in corporate America for about 5 years and finally got bored. Took all the equity out from the house when real estate market was hot along with the credit card debt since nobody wanted to invest with a Rookie. Told my wife, either we will hit it or we are gonna get hit.

Started from Technology then construction, commercial lighting, tech startups, Retail/service now kinda going back to Technology cause that's what the future holds and that's what I actually like doing.

This 5.7L Tundra internal combustion engine will be a thing of past in near future.

Glad you helped fellow entrepreneurs. One thing I never forget, who was there when needed.

I've had people tell me that I could make a tv show out of it but no one has approached me yet. It's definitely a cool and different business. Every project and client is different.

Little bit of everything going on here. Kinda cool.

Not a huge fan of the day job so I don't like talking about it too much but it's software related. :smash:

My degree is in computer science and I worked as a software engineer for 10 years after college. Quit after my first daughter was born to start a photographer studio. Weddings, families, freelance work for Surfer magazine and a little commercial stuff through an agency related to the surf industry. Loved that job. Woke up every morning stoked to go to work and thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of my clients. Right before our third daughter was born the bottom dropped out of the studio and I had to go back to software. We lost pretty much everything and started over. That was about 9 years ago. Humbling experience.

Been trying to get the studio restarted here in Denver but it's way more difficult now. I have very different visions of the clients I want, the things I want to shoot and what I am worth. Day job has me on the road between 50 and 70%, so time is against me. There are only so many hours in the day. When I get home from a trip, all I want to do is get lost in the mountains and spend time with my kids.

Met a guy in Telluride a couple of years ago, when I was there for the photo festival, who told me I need to be working at something that I was "genetically competent" at doing. Really interesting conversation and an intriguing idea. Hoping to get it figured out and turned around in the next year or two.

By genetically competent I suppose he meant a natural aptitude?
Like Michael Phelps and swimming. I could train at swimming 15 hours a day and never swim like that. Definitely knowing what you're able to do well should give us direction! Good luck with your quest!

Partly but I think it's deeper than that. Sure, you can have natural aptitude for being an athlete but that doesn't necessarily translate at being good with a particular trade skill. I use trade skill pretty broadly. It could be anything from welding to accounting or lawyering to teaching.

Photography for me isn't something I have to think about. There's no mental struggle. I just do. Of course, the skill set for running a business is totally different. I realize that and learned a lot about myself during the years I was doing it full time. But, when I'm behind a camera, it just... flows.

I see genetic competency as that. It's a flow state. There's no stress. No mental blocks. Things just happen, naturally. The books Flow and Creativity describe it very well.

The trick is taking that and turning it into something that generates an income.

In my first year of a four year apprenticeship to be a valve technician at Palo Verde Generating Station... the nations largest power generator. Crazy cool place to work and I have never felt so dumb until I started working here with some really smart people. Hopefully in a year or so I'll be able to afford one of these Tundras I've been seeing around here.
