Well, they're probably the same ones who block out their license plates in pics :goingcrazy:

Well damn, I was going to reply to this, then I kept scrolling and see @bmf4069 stealing that thunder...

To that point, it could be an experiment in education to boot. I know people don't want to be educated these days, because it's really cool to be a complete f'n dumbass, DGAF about anyone else much less what they think, or even bother with the truth when there's alternative facts you can rattle off, but I'd participate if it went live on here.

But, I mean, I think I identify as a Saturnian, and we only have rings, not flags.

I have never put my location on any of the socials, to include forums.... Never gave it a second thought... I would venture to think with forums it is because I do not feel personally attached to them. Other socials, for obvious reasons. Interesting and thought provoking question!

OP, I believe this is why some people (from Fl, etc) don’t list location bc they don’t want to be stereotyped.

I just say “central FL” bc that’s where I live and if ppl want to assume I have train horns and a cousin uncle then they may or may not be correct.

I don't really see talking in this chat room as any different from a bunch of us standing around, talking in person. So, it's no different than if I asked you where you're from and you didn't wanna say, and then went and covered your license plate in the driveway. That would be weird.
I don't see how saying where you're from on here, makes anyone any more vulnerable than telling someone in person. The license plate thing I can see people a little more weary of, but still not a biggie. The story earlier about someone making a fake plate with a number they saw online is the first time I've ever heard of anything like that. So, I guess something could technically happen, but is that common? I miss the old days when they would just steal 'em right off your car. But it's not like posting your cc# or SS#.
But I don't see being weird about saying what state you're from. It helps when you're asking a question about pretty much any aspect of a vehicle, from batteries, to rust, to buying/selling, etc, and then people don't have to ask where you're from and then wait 2 days for you to answer. They can just look at what area you're posting from.

Judging by your username, I'm gonna guess you're from Idaho. :monocle:

Seriously though, I spent a little over 2 decades living between the laterals of JAX and Melbourne, spanning a 35 year period, multiple cities, gulf and Atlantic coast. It'd be one thing if I was just bashing on the FL folks as a non-former resident - and for the record, I'm not bashing, just speaking in truths some may find unflattering, which legit residents can attest to - but I can say with first-hand experience, there's something in the water down there, something about the humidity and high temps, something about only having one season, or maybe they're broadcasting crazy out of all the roadside strip malls, I dunno.

But between things like the KKK basically running all of Moon Lake with their own broadcast stations and the Grand Wizard living across the road from a close friend of mine in Astatula, to vampire boy cult leader Rod Ferrell and his parent-slaying madness, to face-eater bath salts dude in Miami and countless other things I somehow managed to survive... the place breeds and attracts batshit-crazy. I love all my people down there though.

I just couldn't live in it anymore, it takes a special kind of person to not go crazy, and I'm not special enough! But props to anyone who can. I just lost another old friend down in Brandon January of this year, drank himself to death at the ripe old age of 43. RIP Tyler. It's taken a few dozen at this point.

Love y'all FL folk. Mean it. But be safe. That place'll kill ya.

    TL;DR
    but my inputs are
    1. It’s not necessarily immediately apparent to fill out that information (i.e. not in your face when signing up) so many simply don’t realize. Sort of like truck details, or changing the “New Member” tag under your username.
    2. Some people are still “stranger danger” for whatever reason and that’s their choice. There’s a guy that works for me that refuses to be photographed (even for the internal private company directory) and will read and object to EULA’s for software that are a requirement to do his job. :notsure:

Of all the forums I’ve been involved in, two Tundra ones are the ones I’ve met the most genuine and incredible people - this forum even more than the other one (that no longer exists). And this past week, putting real names to many of those usernames, took it to an entirely new level. This community is one I never expected to find, but am constantly amazed exists

I tried to get help with that. I went to my appointment at the paranoia clinic, I was told to take a seat in the waiting room and that everyone would be out the get me shortly.

Ask the mods about legitimate threats they and members have received over simple disagreements. You don't have to be an asshole or doing anything crazy to have people that are crazy assholes think that they need to "teach you a lesson" or something. Taking precautions isn't a sign of irrational fear.

Depends on the plate, and there is a huge difference between people who live where you do seeing it and people from who knows where seeing it. Wyoming plates, for example, have a county number listed on them. That narrows the area of the state by a large margin. Combine that with the low population of the state, let alone counties, and it wouldn't be hard to find somebody.

I cannot speak for others, but with my vehicle being a unique color and living in a low population state, it wouldn't be horribly hard to track it down. I've known plenty of assholes who wanted to sabotage vehicles because they didn't like that somebody disagreed, looked at them wrong, or proved them wrong and made them look stupid. I imagine those same people would behave the same way on the internet.

I will admit that my mild paranoia is to not have a distinct-looking vehicle. I don’t get vanity plates or have stickers on my truck. I want to blend in with the other cars.

    No sugar in my oatmeal!

It's less about fear than it is trust. How many random people would you trust with anything of value? Non members can view much of the site, and if you have nice things in your truck, or state that you don't have catalytic converter guards, what is to stop somebody from stealing stuff from your vehicle? Do I think it will happen? No. Could it? Absolutely. So I take a small precaution. There are several people on here that know where I live, but that is because they've earned the trust.

Alabama as well. 1st digit of the plate identifies the county, which, taking my parents as an example, their entire county has like 50k people in the whole damn thing, half are in the attached city. Compare that to my county which is surely over a million at this point. One is manageable to hunt someone down. But I have a vanity plate on an older truck so I probably stick out like a sore thumb a bit more than dad in his 2.5 gen.

This is asinine, sad, and paints the picture of a pathetic excuse for a human being. But I've had it happen without internet forums, so it is what it is. If it happens, it happens. Even if someone came at me, I'd still offer to buy 'em a beer. But not before I throw a few hands if I had to.

Oh, and since you mentioned it, I did have one dude threaten me via private message a year or two ago. I almost forgot about that! I think he threatened one or two others as well for calling them out on their shit.
